Taking things to a grander scale.
Like the name suggests, the philosophy behind this Epic Series 14" x 6-1/2" snare drum is all about taking things to a grander scale. By combining inner and outer plies of Birch veneer (2 plies at both the outer and inner shell,) and 4 core plies of premium maple, this drum focuses in the mid-tonal range with focused attack and sweet fundamental lows. The Vintage Bronze hardware featured on these drums hearkens to the golden era of drumming, with a look to a new age of percussion.

I actually received this as a graduation gift from my parents, and it is beautiful. First off- the mahogany finish is amazing along with the hardware. Second- The sounds is great right out of the box. The Remo UK head is pretty good, but I may switch to an Aquarian coated response 2 (I've used this head on a very old Ludwig 10 ply maple piccolo and its sounds great). This snare has wonderful midranges, as said in the other reviews, but also puts a strange twist to lower pitches. I also didn't have any size issues as one of the reviews stated, so it may only be a fluke. If you are on edge about this snare, I would greatly encourage you to buy this one. it's a wonderfully satisfying experience to tell other drummers that your snare drum is EPIC, and be able to follow it up with an authentic EPIC label.
I purchased this drum because I was captivated with the way the drum looked (I have the white shell) and I wanted to test it out. I was really surprised at the sound of this Hybrid snare. I have an arsenal of snares and I love experimenting with different sounds. This drum is a steal ... If you are looking for a well rounded snare, this is your drum. It is very nice to see Ludwig put a good product at a very reasonalbe price in this depressed economic climate! I am going to put them back on my list of good drum makers again!
The Ludwig Epic 6.5x14 snare drum in mahogany fade is one of the coolest sounding drums I have come upon recently. It is quite volumous, and has an attack and fullness in the mid range that is very stated. It is well made and looks stunning. The biggest drawback is that the diameter of the shell is slightly undersized. This means that you must carefully select a batter head with a wider collar, otherwise the head won't stay centered on the shell, and the rim will slip off of the collar of the head causing catastrophic de-tuning. I had to go to a Remo Powerstroke III, instead of my beloved Evans Generra. The heads that come standard on the drum are Remo UK, they also have a slightly narrower collar like the Evans heads, and are not suited at all to this drum/rim combination. With a little tweaking and experimentation, I had my Epic sounding awesome in no time at all! This is not at all a snare for the novice or beginning player, it is too temperamental, but for old school Ludwig guys such as myself, it is a nice breath of fresh 1960's air!
I had been playing a cheap pdp snare that sounded awful no matter how it was tuned or what kind of head was on it. I tested the epic at a music store and instantly loved it. Recently I put on an Aquarian hi energy head and tuned it very high and it even sounds more amazing than before. Its super responsive and has a nice smooth pop to it. When tuned mid range, it puts out a slightly deeper, more full sound. Rim shots and stick hits sound really good and aren't annoying like my previous snare. Overall, its definitely worth buying and the vintage mahogany is BEAUTIFUL!
I know there are some of you out there who are wondering should you buy this snare or not... Let me answer your question. This is a great snare to add to the arsenal. I have 6 1/2 x 14 black beauty, 1960's slingerland maple among other snares I'm not saying this one will ever be like those, but it does sound great. It's a good medium tuned snare, and it has plenty of body. I hope this helps, go get one.
