This Mapex Black Panther Retrosonic snare drum is a classically styled, beautifully crafted drum. It produces a rich, vintage-style sound and features an 8.1mm walnut shell.
Each Mapex snare drum features handbuilt and hand-finished Black Panther shells and completely redesigned hardware. From the fresh, sculpted lug design to the smart new badge, Black Panther snare drums are now more beautiful than ever.
Mapex Black Panther hardware
The cylinder-drive strainer on the Black Panther Retrosonic snare uses a self-lubricating bearing to ensure smooth operation while providing minute control of the snare tension. Mapex's piston-style throw-off is incredibly smooth and requires minimal effort to operate, and the adjustment dial employs micro-lock technology that provides a tactile click as it's turned, allowing precise control.
Sonic Saver Hoop
The Sonic Saver Hoop bridges the gap between flanged hoops and die-cast hoops. A unique shaping process creates a profile that reduces wear and tear to both sticks and hands while dramatically enhancing the response and feel of every rimshot.
The Sonic Saver is significantly lighter than a conventional die-cast hoop, so it won't choke the shell's vibration. The result is a more natural percussive sound with much greater resonance.
This Mapex Black Panther snare drum features stainless steel snare wires for crisp, lively action and premium Remo drum heads, including a coated Ambassador batter head.

I upgraded from a Mapex Black Panther maple 14x6.5 to this new "retrosonic" ... i put the two drums side by side.. and the Retrosonic SMOKES the "widow".. the "widow" lacked the 50-200Hz warmth.
the Retrosonic has more depth & clarity, and ultrasmooth hardware.. i love the hoops too.. this drum sings
The Retrosonic has a beautifully balanced tone that connects it to my Saturn drum kit.. it has enough bass response for me, while also being very articulate and punchy. I have it tuned pretty low, and ghost notes are still very defined.
Recorded, I didn't need to add compression or EQ to make it sit well.. it is naturally awesome and thick.
If you need to upgrade your snare, and you want to keep it simple, this is perfect.

I have four other snare drums. 7" Orange County snare that does the job wonderfully but it lacks the response I need. I have a 6.5" Mapex steel, Tama steel, solid maple piccolo snare. None of them gave me what I wanted. I just purchased this snare and it's everything I need. It's crisp great response around the edge is great for rudiments. The center has a nice round sound. The hardware is awesome. The walnut is georgous. I simply love it, great drum.
