    Mapex

A pro-quality kit from Mapex for the percussionist at the sunrise of their playing career.

The Mapex Horizon HX model rewrites the book on what features an entry-level, 5-piece drumset should have. The all-basswood shells produce rich tones with remarkable sustain. The tone is further enhanced by the redesigned Mapex Isolated Tom Holder System (ITS). This new compact and lightweight system keeps the mounting hardware off of the shell allowing it to vibrate more freely. The re-styled tom holder now includes a convenient spot for an auxiliary cymbal placement.

The Horizon HX is available in several covered finishes. The hardware is the newly designed Mapex 500 Series hardware.

    Cymbals sold separately.

    Features

    • 7.2mm Basswood shells with durable high-gloss wrapped new finishes

Comments about Mapex Horizon Standard 5-Piece Drum Set:

I bought this kit strictly on a whim. I was browsing MF and came across this set and thought why not. For the price I could always use a couple more cymbal stands, HH stand or whatever if the set was junk. After I put this set together I was pleasantly surprised how good it played. Granted the heads are on the cheap end, the wood material is not the best, but if you take your time and tune correctly they produce an acceptable tone. I tune with a dial tuner and it helps get the best sound out of heads, even cheap ones. I also use moongel to dampen the head ring, my personal preference. The throne and bass pedal is low end but the rest of the hardware is decent for the price. If you are looking for the kit that will be your studio or all in everything kit this is not it but if you need or just want a kit for practice, even small gigs or something you can beat the snot out of and not care about scratches and bangs and all that, this is it.

Comments about Mapex Horizon Standard 5-Piece Drum Set:

I've played guitar for 20 plus years. I picked this up for my studio recordings and had a close friend who has been drumming professionaly as long come set it up. He was impressed with the hard ware quality, and the tone of the bass drum. We added Remo control rings and it made a huge difference. I don't think you will get anything thing else this quality at this price.

          Decent set after some upgrades

Comments about Mapex Horizon Standard 5-Piece Drum Set:

I got a really good deal on this set, which is good because it needed some upgrades to sound nice. The heads that came with it have all kinds of overtones and ring on forever. I first tried some Remo RemOs tone control rings and MoonGels. That made a huge difference. I would highly recommend getting some unless you want to change all of the heads.

If you want to go all out, get a full set of new heads. I purchased Evans hydraulic heads for all of the toms, EMAD heads for the kick, and the Genera dry for the snare. I also upgraded the snare wires. This did add a couple hundred to the kit, but after tuning, made it sound very good.
