Comments about Mapex MPX Birch Snare Drum:

I bought this snare about four or five years ago. I got the 14x5.5 model. It sounds really great for pretty much everything. It has a great crack when tuned high, and a nice round punch when tuned low. Not to mention the finishes are great.

There's just two things this snare lacks, and that is body and sensitivity. The snare only being 5.5" deep, it doesn't have the kind of full body that I like in a snare, but it can certainly stand up next to a lot of high end snares. The one big thing that it is missing is the sensitivity. If you play a high end snare, you'll notice that every little ghost note comes alive and jumps out at you. That doesn't happen with this snare, but you can't really expect it to, given the price range.

Overall, it's a great drum for the price you pay

Comments about Mapex MPX Birch Snare Drum:

I walked into a music store about three years ago and just happened to wander by the snare section on my way to check out some cymbals I had my eye on. Never had any interest in snares before, but for some reason I nonchalantly tapped on a 13" Black Panther and stopped dead in my tracks.

That instantly opened my eyes to the world of snares and launched an amazing (albeit very short) journey for me. It had what I thought the perfect snare sound be.

Unfortunately I couldn't afford the Panther at the time, but took note of its quality and inquired about this Birch MPX since it was a third of the price, but very similar in design. I had been playing a 14" snare and welcomed the flexibility and faster attack a 13" would offer.

So, I figured for 140 I'd risk it, and got the 13x6 MPX Birch in black. I have not once wanted for anything else since I opened its box.

The perfect blend of projection, yet warmth and control and responsiveness. I could afford a Black Panther now, but honestly, I'm perfectly happy with this MPX. I'm sure the Panther sounds even better, but the MPX has all I want. It's been durable, looks killer with the black hardware, and makes my sub-standard handwork and blast beats sound tight and brutal.

The only thing I can say bad about it is, make sure you change the batter head. Mine broke within 5 hits, and I'm hardly a heavy hitter. Granted, I was expecting to replace it as I always do with new drums, but I just had taken it out of the box to try it out.

The stock resonant head, on the other hand, is actually still on it and still sounds amazing. For all intents and purposes, it's the equivalent of a hazy Ambassador Snare. I picked up a replacement for it, but have seen and heard no reason to replace it.

The other benefit I discovered about having a 13" snare is the batter head seems to wear longer than on a 14", so I've had to change it far less than on my older snare. And it retains its definition and rebound much longer.

This drum represents probably the best money I've ever spent on my kit pound for penny.

Comments about Mapex MPX Birch Snare Drum:

I've owned this snare for a few years and, while it is not on par with those top quality custom snares, it is surprisingly great. I don't know if they have changed how they make them, but mine doesn't really sound like the more recent ones. Great tone though. My only complaint is that the tension rod directly under where I rimshot comes loose all the time, but that is to be expected with the way that I play. Overall, it's a great drum, for a great price.

        Pretty good

Comments about Mapex MPX Birch Snare Drum:

Overall it's a pretty good snare but one of the snare wires came off and the head that came with the snare broke so easily... But the snare looks nice sounds nice and I like it.
I got through the snare head that came with the snare in like a week or a few days... and I don't even hit very hard, very very weak. And after like 1.5 month one of the snare wires came off and I don't know if I should tape it to the reso head or take it off?
It's a good snare for the price and I'm pretty happy with it.

        Beautiful but...

Comments about Mapex MPX Birch Snare Drum:

This snare is really pretty, but I'd have to say the sound just "alright". The stock batter head is pretty good. Really loud and snappy, but it's kinda thin, so it's easy to wear down. I only had mine on for about a week before the coating started to come off. I switched it with a Remo Emperor Coated head. The snare wires are a lousy 15 strand, and they're a little flimsy. I got a new 20 strand and now it sounds amazing. Overall I'd say it's a great snare for intermediate drummers.
