      Neary

A popular drum torque wrench designed to measure lug tension and simplify tuning.

The popular Neary Drum Torque drum-tuning tool works like a standard mechanic's torque wrench. By measuring the twisting force applied to each drum tuning lug the Drum Torque greatly simplifies the drum-tuning process, making it easy to set all the lugs to equal tension. The Torque's meter measures between 2 and 25 pound-feet.

The Drum Torque is made of high-impact black plastic and contains a precision-calibrated heavy-duty spring to ensure accurate adjustments. This T-shaped tool fits on your drum's tuning lugs. Simply grip the outer edge of the dial and place the chuck over the drum lug and turn clockwise.

Neary ships the Drum Torque with a 2-pronged adapter that fits over drum keys for tight lug-hoop clearances.

I've been playing drums for a # of years now and for whatever reason i've never had any kind of 'ear' to be able to tune my drums, guitars, etc by ear. I've always had to rely on various gadgets to get my instruments in tune. I've tried other drum tension tuners, the Drum Dial, etc and while all these other products work well, they are time intensive. Anyone who has owned the Drum Dial will tell you that they work great, but it takes several mins to dial them im. With this Torque tuner it now only takes me a min or two tops to tune my drum heads and they sound the same each and every time.

Granted when you 1st get your drums ready for the Drum Torque you will need to spend some time oiling and taking apart all of your drum lugs, which will take awhile, but one you complete this chore it will repay you in spades because you will be able to tune your heads quickly and effectivly each and every time. Great product.

The Neary is easy to use. For a torque tool I think I like using the gage and watching the pointer on the Neary. However, don't expect that just setting the torque will get you a tuned drum. This will get you close. I think my first mistake was buying into the assumption that all lugs have the same friction and they don't. Even after oiling each and every lug. I also think my set has something that grabs the lug when installed so there is even more friction for the Neary to deal with. But, you just use more torque to over come this. This Neary gets you close but the drum will not be completely in tune. Some lugs at the same torque will have slightly higher tones than others because of the difference in friction between the lugs. What I do is torque all the lugs to the same tension then find the highest pitch because that lug has the least resistance (friction) and I presume it to be the most correct pitch. Then I use my ear to adjust the rest of the lugs to the one I picked as my reference. If you want perfectly tunes drums and you have the budget then get the drum head tension tool. Otherwise, using a torque tool gets you close and your ear will get you the rest of the way. I am going to borrow my buddy's tension tool and then measure and record my torque settings.I had to use one of the adapters with the drum key. The standard socket would not fit over the lug next to the ring holding on the drum head. No big deal but it baffled me for a couple of hours thinking I needed a lug nut extension. The neary comes with an adapter that allows it to work with your drum key. Just put the thing on that likes like a couple of spikes and viola, you can now torque the lugs with your drum key and the Neary!

I've been using this same Neary Drum Torque for over 20 years! Once I had the tuning "value" I liked for each drum, I wrote it down and kept in a bag with the tuner. Before each gig or set-up I just referenced my "cheat sheet" and tuned very quickly. Its made of plastic so you can't beat it up but I've had the same one for over 20+ years. Makes tuning fast and easy!

The torque wrench itself works great! Tuning a whole set is extremely fast and easy with this thing. However, the tips are made of plastic and can easily be stripped when tuning tight snare or hi tom drums. Mine is stripped and has been rendered completely useless to me. I hope i can find a replacement tip or find a good one with a metal tip!

Neary torque gauge - Thumbs Up

                    By Mr Dana

                    from Central Arizona, USA

                    Comments about Neary Drum Torque:

In the past I have hand tightened my banjo heads, I will never do that again. The Neary tool answered my nagging questions about how tight is too tight and too loose.
I love mine, use it to tune my Banjo heads. It sure could use another adaptor for different size sockets that use 1/4 inch drive handles. So I made my own.
Worked first time I used it. I've heard all the jokes you can't tune a banjo but now now I know you can tune the head very acurately. Now, if I could just tune my fingers.
Some people mix up the $ they pay for a tool with the perceived value. A $100 tool with $10 value is a bad deal. The Neary gauge IMHO is worth more than I paid for it. Before I learned of the Neary gauge I was already thinking of ways to assemble a torque wrench from the hardware store but couldn't find one with a low enough dynamic range. Now I think this torque gauge would have been a good deal at twice what I paid.

This is seriously the best drum key/tuner I have ever used. Tunes my drums perfect every time. I made a laminate with all the tensions for my 3 kits that my drum tech wore until he got them down. He ran up and tuned them before sound check and after and the first hit of every night was perfectly in tune and my drums sounded conisisten through the extent of tours until my heads needed changing. Seriously Buy It! SOOO WORTH IT!

The Neary is easy to use. For a torque tool I think I like using the gage and watching the pointer on the Neary. Comments about Neary Drum Torque:

Don't even question it. This is THE greatest tuner. It evenly and accurately torques each tension rod precisely the same. Tunes the entire set perfectly in minutes. Great for quick tweaking right before a gig because its so fast and consistant. Yes, it's more expensive than the Evans or Rythem Tech keys, but it blows them away. Totally worth the extra money. Cheaper than the Drum Dial. I'm on my second one. (Only because my first one was stolen). Buy it. I said so. Now!!

I can't believe what a phenomenal tool this is! My drums sound perfect. As stated in the instructions, I simply removed all the lugs, lubed the lugs with Tama Tune Up Oil (3-in-1 oil would also work) to ensure the lugs all turn equally smooth & consistent. After some trial and error, I found the right tension numbers to make each drum sound perfect. I then wrote down the numbers so I can easily maintain and/or reproduce the same tuning.I highly recommend this product!!!
