      OVERVIEW

Huge, warm sound with premium features.

The insides of Orange County's drums are hand-sanded and then sealed to a satin finish. The edges always have a ply of flatness for a true sound and for maximum resonance. The edges are also sanded smooth for a very finished feel. All of OCDP's logo badges are engraved aluminum for a custom look.

      Offset lugs
The lugs are made from an aluminum/zinc alloy that is far stronger than the zinc #3 that virtually all other drum lugs are made of.

Offset lugs are lugs that are not directly in line with each other and they are staggered either 50% or 7/8". This does nothing for the sound of the drum, but it gives the drum a more custom look which some people prefer.

      Die Cast hoops
These hoops are a thicker-style hoop than the standard 2.3mm hoops used on the toms. They are used on the thicker ply snare drums and the vented drums as these tend to have a lot of ring and the die-cast hoops will help control this.

      Trick Throw Off
The Trick throw-off has become the industry standard for throw-offs and is one of the strongest throws off on the market.

To be honest, I was very surprised by this drum. I was originally interested in the Tama SLP 13x7, but this drum had a better price point. I had never heard this drum in person before buying it and was pretty skeptical at the [$] price tag. Don't let that fool you though, this snare has everything. The shell is a 20 ply all maple shell with a finishing layer of ash, which looks even better than the pictures. The hoops are black nickel plated die cast metal, which is different than the pictures, but didn't bother me. The throw off is made by trick and again is plated in black nickel. I can't tell you how it sounds straight out of the box with stock heads, because I replaced them immediately with an Evans HD Dry and a Hazy 300. This drum honestly is close to perfect for me. I play almost every style of music. I can crank it up and it's perfect for Hip Hop, R&B, and Gospel, or I can lower it for when I play Rock, Jazz, and Latin. This drum can blend into almost any musical situation that I throw at it. Pick one up and try it out, you won't be sorry.

So far, I'm not as pleased as I hoped to be after reading the other reviews. Came with a broken snare-side-resonator head (hoop was way too loose, which allowed it to beat the flimsy head and shred it to pieces.) I was planning on replacing the heads so it wasn't a real big deal. I had an extra Remo Ambassador to use for the snare side, which is too thick to get that sizzle from the snare wires. I will be trying some other heads, searching for a better balance to the sound.
The die cast hoops are excellent, as well as the shell and the Trick throw-off. It has potential, just haven't found the sweet sound from it yet.
I'm taking it into the studio this evening to give it a real work-out... so maybe I'll have more to say afterwards.
I'm hoping by changing heads, possibly the snare wires, I'll be able to get a nice deep pop from this snare.
Orange County Drum needs to take a little more effort into their packaging... I don't mind it being sent in a plastic bag, inside a box, but don't leave the hoops so loose they beat up whatever is in the way. It could have damaged the shell!

As of right now, I would NOT recommend this snare to others... but I might change my mind after having more time with it. Needs some customizing.

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion Maple Snare:

I have had this for about 3 years, I have the 6x13 Natural. A bit large for my jazz genre, but that is my problem, not the drums..It has served me well over time. My ONLY issue is that after 3 years of daily playing, the snare throw off broke, but that was my fault. The problem is, a replacement can only be ordered thru Orange County. Yes, I could put any throw on it, but I would have to drill holes to fit. I want to avoid that, tried a couple of throws, and all require new holes. The easy way, so I thought, would be to order from local GC, who I believe now owns a stake in OC. However, it must be ordered directly from OC..which makes no sense, because OC told me, "it is proprietary"..I believe the design should be adaptable for standard throws.
All that being said, the snare has served me well. I have a new throw on the way, and will continue to use. I replaced the heads with Evans 300 and HD Dry..the only heads used...also swapped out the snare wires with GroovePro...snare is perfect, and for the money, you can't go wrong

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion Maple Snare:

I got the 6"x14". Sounds average to slightly above average IMHO. The wood appears to be and sounds like Ash all the way through, not Maple. Therefore, not sensitive with a natural muting that some might consider a good thing. But to me, the sound is flat like Ash, not warm like Maple. I have had several OCDP wooden snares and every one had "dents" (for lack of a better description) in the bearing edges instead of a crisp, clean edge. One of my Evans batter heads would not fit inside the die cast hoop. Overpriced IMHO. Sold mine at a 70% loss. These comments come from someone who has had 30+ snares in the past 10 years and has been playing for 50 years.

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion Maple Snare:

I am someone who has started somewhat of a snare drum collection, and this involves a lot of research and a lot of testing of different snare drums. I was really looking for a wood snare (preferably maple) with some serious warmth and depth. I absolutely found what I was looking for. I purchased the 6 x 14 Black Burst model - it looks gorgeous and sounds even better. It is a beautifully made snare that is easy to tune to get the sound that you want. I replaced the snare side head but have been using the stock Remo batter head it came with, and it's holding up really nicely. Despite being mocked by the guys at Guitar Center for picking OCDP out of all my brand options, I definitely made the right choice. Super sensitive, and great for hard hitters as well.

I attached my own picture of it.

I bought this snare as a replacement for my 1965 Gretsch snare that was stolen by some low lifes! I was a little leary at first but after putting a Remo Fiberskyn 3FA on it (my preference), there was no stopping it! It actually has a warmer and stronger sound than my old snare! Fit and finnish is inpecable (I have silver sparkle) and the price is great! I have dw and Tama snares in my line up and I have to say they don't hold up as well as my OCDP snare and it costa 70% less!

Comments about Orange County Drum & Percussion Maple Snare:

I was expecting a lot out of this snare drum after reading all the reviews and listening to some sound samples of this drum.

That being said, being completely blind to what sound and drum I would be getting from this purchase, I am greatly impressed by this snare.

The picture doesn't serve it justice! The finish was flawless and looks amazing.

The stock heads that come with it are Remo UT heads; one coated, and one clear; so at the very least, you will have to replace the batter within a week.

To my surprise, the snare drum sounded amazing with just the stock heads on it!

A month later, I still have the stock resonant head on it but I replaced the batter with a Remo Black X. It still has the stock wires on it as well.

Even though it has 6-8 vent holes in it, this snare is very sensitive and still has a good, warm, resonant tone with lots of body to it depending on how you tune it.

I don't believe the throw off is a Trick throw-off, but it is still a heavy duty throw that works very, very well. It doesn't come undone while playing, and it doesn't choke your snare at medium-high snare tensions. (Keep in mind, I still have the stock wires on.)

Bearing edges were very clean cut, sanded and I believe they were even waxed. Smooth to the touch and very even.

Die-cast hoops compliment the snare drum well. They give it that extra crack all us drummers are looking for. Also very heavy duty. Looks great in the Black Nickel!

The only issue I had with this snare drum was that one of the vent holes came undone and fell out only after about a month or so of playing it. It was probably my own fault anyways for not checking to make sure all the hardware was tight before I put my heads on. But it was very simple to put back into place.

All in all, for the price I paid, this was a steal to say the least. 2 Die cast hoops alone cost as much as this snare did, and I am very happy with my purchase. This can easily be a main snare drum for any drummer out there. If you're a drummer on a budget, the 14x6 Black Burst snare is for you.

              You won't be disappointed!

I love the sound of this snare drum, its great for shows and recording tracks. The downside is it started falling apart shortly after I got it, The snares started breaking and I had to put thread tape on the lugs just to keep them from rattling out of the drum just from playing it.

Also, this snare is easy to tune due to the large amount of lugs. A good pick for anybody whos just beginning! BTW It goes great with Pearl Masters Series kits.

Bought this snare as a gift for an extremely gifted drummer who had his snare disappear recently. I have enjoyed the other reviews and that helped me to take a chance on this particular snare.

Man! I don't play drums, but I sure can appreciate the sound of a good one. My friend loves it. He had it tweaked ot his satisfaction fairly quickly, too.
