I have very very mixed feelings about this drum. Certain things I really like, and then it has it's limitations...which are really unfortunate. DW/Pacific almost had a really great snare drum here. I bought the 5"x14" in amber. I LOVE the shells!...they are quality acrylic shells. The Amber gives it that Bonham look which is fantastic. This drum would sound incredible if the tuning lugs would allow you to crank the drum up higher. I use a drum dial to get my tuning close and then go by ear. About 90 seems to be as high as you can get with some lugs turning much tighter in their receivers than others at the same tension, which is not very consistent. While turning the tension rods into their inserts at a higher tension they have a feel like a much cheaper drum. With most quality snare drums going into that 90 plus range makes the drum come alive exploding with rich tone. This drum certainly would if the tuning hardware would just allow it to...which is a real shame.
I bought this snare in 5x13 about two weeks ago, and it sounds excellent. Rim-clicks are very defined. Tuned high or low it sounds great. I would defiantly recommend some Moon gel, one has done the trick for me with a Evans EC snare head. I use it on Metal and funk mostly and it kicks. Bass players and Sound Guys love this snare.
