OVERVIEW

Pearl innovation delivers gorgeous colorations.

The Free Floating concept removes all hardware from the shell as an extremely effective way of increasing the coloration of each shell material to maximize its contribution to the overall sound of the drum. It also lets you swap shells as easily as changing a batter head. An aircraft-quality aluminum alloy bottom edge ring is machined to provide perfect seating with the shell and is precision cut to offer the most stable, sensitive, responsive snare bed imaginable. All hardware is attached to the edge ring, including the throw-off, allowing the shell to resonate freely. The SR-010 throw-off provides super smooth action. Crafted of 6-ply aged premium maple.

A quality kit demands a quality snare. Order this sweetie and revolutionize your sound!

I rarely give reviews, but this one warrants my input. I originally got this snare in 1988 to replace my Pearl Export series stock snare. It immediately became my favorite drum and by far the crown jewel of my set.

Now, 23 years later, it is still the crown jewel of my set. I've tried different snares over the years, and none have the amazing sound this one has. It's extrememly well made, stands the test of time, and has incredible sound.

If you have the money and want a maple snare, this one won't let you down.

Here's a video of this drum in action, notice how it cuts nicely through the mix:

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

This 14x6.5 maple version is spot-on what I was looking for. The sound is a good mix of crack and fat, and the die-cast hoops make gorgeous rim shots. There's a lot of ring, but an Evans Reverse Power Center head struck the right balance.

I was going to look for a used Free Floater, but the current generation's throw-off is a big improvement over the old designs you usually see in the used market.

Buy this snare and be happy!

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

This snare is a great all around snare. I have played with my band for the past 4 years and I needed a snare that was edgy enough for the rock we play, similar to chili peppers, pearl jam, and I also needed it for some faster tempo more jimmy eat worlish stuff. This is the one. great resonance, perfect crack. This thing will make your drumming heard. Very tight sound if tuned to your liking. The only thing I wish it had sometimes was the depth of an 8x14 but thats asking to much. Overall best snare Ive played.

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

The quality, and craftsmanship of the hardware is like nothing I'd seen. From the cast hoops, to the snare throw-off, this is the best snare I've ever owned. Even the bolts are made of stainless steel so you'll never have to worry about rust (from dripping sweat on it...if your not dripping sweat by the end of the night....I replaced the included Remo coated ambassador with an Evans EC Snare. It gave this snare just the right amount of "darkness" to get rid of the "poppy" sound of the Remo. I cranked the included bottom Remo quite tight, but left the included copper snare wires just loose enough to give this monster a beautiful "studio" sound. By the way...I love the "fat" stick sound this thing makes. There doesn't seem to be a "sweet spot". You can hit the cast hoops anywhere with your side stick and it makes the same sound consistently.

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

I recently tried an acrylic shell on my 5 x 14 free floater and this thing was the loudest cutting snare I have ever heard. I had to go back to the maple shell cus it was to load. But great for large venues. I am now looking into a bubinga segment shell to try out. That's the best thing about this snare is the versatiltiy. I have an ec2 snare head with hazy 300 resonant and puresound wires on it. I crank it cus I like the response and clarity of a tight snare head. I like the new model with the double snare adjustment cus its lock mechanism prevents the wires getting loose.

Just got my snare and it sounds great, just enough body and crack. Sounds like a gunshot and cuts thru the amps without a problem, Stick responce is the best I have ever experienced.

Best all around snare EVER!

By JROCK!!

from Wellston, Ohio

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

I've been playin drums for over 20yrs. Tuning & head chioce are crutial in gettin a good snare sound. With that being said, I have had this one for goin on 7 years & have never heard a better snare. I have almost a dozen different snares, this one is my "baby." Other drummers appoach me at shows to pick my brain about my snare, cuz it has the sound they want. Put an emporer X on that sucka & you'll be kickin goals. My only beef is that the throw off loosens every few songs so ya gotta tighten them back up. Not a big deal at all, since I typically have them fairly loose in the first place, so it's partially my fault. Nothin a little rock n roll tape can't handle though!

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

I played this in my local music store, and it's awesome. I played the 14" x 3.5", so I'm not sure how the other sizes will sound, but I love this one. It's incredibly sensitive, and loud. It's bright, but not as high-pitched as a steel snare. I'm buying this.

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

WOW! What a snare! This snare has all the warmth of a maple wood snare like you would suspect, but when tuned just right, it has all the sustain and resonance of even the thinnest metal snare. That's a lot to incorporate into one snare. I have the 5x 14 model. Buy this snare; it will be the last one you'll buy.

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

I Was a bit disappointed in this snare. i love the sensitivity, however, the rim shot sound was sub par. i should have expected that due to how there is hardly any shell to hardware contact, which is needed for rim shots/cross sticking. dont get me wrong, if you dont play alot of cross sticking, etc. this is an awsome snare.

I am a pro musician. I am a trained jazz drummer and playing for about forty-three years. I own a maple piccolo and I just ordered a six and a half inch. They have an amazing cutting, yet mellow sound and are very responsive to even the most delicate and intricate rudiments. IT'S A 10.

One of the snappiest w/out being a soprano

By ababselectstart

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

After owning for 5 years, the bottom lugs fell out very few times, and only after not tuning the bottom head for a while. Some what hard to get all the buzz out, unless you tweak the crap out of it. But when tweaked real tight, has a sharp snap that makes you feel all warm inside. Just recently the screw that connects to the arm to turn on the snare came loose, but easy to fix. For the long term a nice snare to rely on in a world of crappy snares.

Good all around Snare

By ChickCoreaForever

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

This is a great snare for anyone drumset or symphony. I love the sound of the drum and the unique concept of not drilling the shell. This drum is a great concept of how to keep a drum plain and simble. For head selection go with Controlled Sound Remo for batter side and a plain old clear ambasador for the snare side. Its a great drum that sounds good in any situation

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

I like the clarity, it's almost too clear. It picks up on anything you do with the snare. Any little hit will be heard whether you want it to be heard or not. the range is phenomenal, you can get the lowest pop to the high pitched crack. This thing is extremely versitile. But does need to be tuned correctly or it will sound like a hunk. I put and evans head with the pin holes on a few months after I bought it, and it helped give it some more depth. def. worth the money.

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

I play in a pop punk band and bought this snare a couple months ago. I tried out a whole bunch of different snares and the sound this one produced was what I was looking for. It's awesome, my only complaint is some tuning issues, it could be a defect in mine, im not sure, but it goes out of tune more than I'd like, which is one downside. Overall, it's a great snare

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

This is a fantastic snare drum. the snares are incredibly sensitive. i bought it (5x14) and immediately replaced the ambassador head with a remo fiberskyn 3 and it sounds golden. the mastercast hoops are fantastic for shots. and sounds aside this drum just looks good.a common critique that i have come across is this snare is that it is too dry, and all i would say in response to that is that a drum is only as good as you tune it. someone may have already written this, but the pearl free floater picks up even the slightest rudimental intricacies with great clarity.

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

I purchased the 14x3.5 as my piccalo/secondary snare. Once tuned properly, it sounds amazing. It has a great crack and is rather dry, but not overly so. I changed the Remo batter out for a Evans G1 and I think it sounds better. The only problem I have is that I can easily overpower the band in smaller venues as this thing is very loud. Even with that, this is by far the favorite of my 3 snares.

Comments about Pearl Free Floating 6-Ply Maple Snare Drum:

I have owned the piccolo for over 10 years and I absolutely love this drum. I network with a lot of drummers and they all want mine. I tell them that they can get their own, but they want mine! This drum will do anything you need it to! If you do a lot of rim work, put lug locks on or you will be picking them up off the floor. Remo coated pinstripe works very well.
