I have used this as my satellite/2nd snare for over 10 years now and love it. To me, that is what This is suited for: aux snare (not main). Replaced top/stock head which improved things a lot! (Recommend Remo FibreSkin for top) Have not found the need to replace the actual snares though I do want to redo the snare side head.

I generally tune it up high for the Drum n Bass / Hip Hop sounds. Relatively ringy on it's own which has its place (nice reggae back beat tone) - dampen it up and it serves even more sonic purposes. Simply cannot beat the quality for the price. I got mine ages ago for ninety nine beans - shell is thick and rich (Check out the pic). Have brought this into the studio twice as well & the engineers were blown away.

If you have $$ to burn, there are better 10" snares out there but if you are looking for a 2nd snare to add some sonic spice and don't want to spend a fortune, you cannot beat this firecracker!

I purchased this snare about a year ago, and honestely the only thing I can say about it is that it is durable (hence the 5 stars for quality). After I first opened it up and looked at it I was surprised at how simple it was. all it is is a drum with a snare attached, no other parts (muffling, tweaking, etc.). it didn't even come with a tuning key. anyhow, I tuned it up, hit it once and quite near vomited. I have been playing for 13+ years and have been giving lessons for almost 5 years, and never have I owned, let alone heard a worse snare. I replaced the head, duct taped it, etc. (the usual process for trying to make a drum sound better), and still it is dull as hell. I purchased this to use for thrash and grindcore to get that ultra high-pop, and did not find it anywhere. All I got was a dull, dull, ring. I let my students bang it around now and it's been dropped dozens of times, and still hasn't cracked or changed sound, so at least it's durable.

Comments about Pearl Wood Firecracker Snare:

let me start by saying this review is on the 5x12 wood drum. i like a lot of folks read the reviews about this drum before i bought it.. for the most part they were not favorable. going against the grain ( experience told me this drum should work well) i made the purchase. during the purchase i also ordered a new batter as well as snare side head. ( folks this is the secret to making many drums sound great) the heads i ordered for this app. were the aquarian studio x power dot (batter) and aquarian classic clear (snare side) the studio x offers the perfect amount of damping to mute "most" of the ring but not the sound of the drum. the clear classic adds a lot of bite to the snare side. and the combo is th perfect marriage with this drum.. as far as the quaility of the drum, its really a decent drum that should last quite a while.. like most "import" drums the lugs will have some tight spots and this is actually a result of the chromeing process and not bad lugs... i have a tendency to put "neversease" on the lugs when i put the new heads on so its not ever really a problem. for those of you that are saying this is not a loud drum?? i think you need q tips.. this is a seriously seriously loud drum.. one note though.. if you over tighten the lugs, the drum will get quite, (stands to reason) it does like to play tuned high, as well as low, but there is a "definate sweet spot" in tuning of this drum. overall for under a buck fifty. its a hell of a deal. you wont be sorry..

I bought this a few days ago. I needed a snare that sounded at least somewhat like a marching snare. Althought it's not identical, obviously, it produces such a great, high-pitched crack, that it's perfect for what I need it for. I love it!

Received this wood 5x10 on a trade, first thing I did was replace stock batter head and snare wires.Put a coated Remo Emperor on it and a 12 strand Purecussion wire set,I tuned it up semi tight and to prevent choking I backed off the strainer so the wires were pressing into the snare head not too firm.It tuned up great I use this as my primary snare on my Yamaha Club Jorden Cocktail Kit.Been using this setup now for just over a year and am quite pleased with this little drum. For the cost it is a good deal and a drum I am sure you will be reaching for on any playing situation.

Comments about Pearl Wood Firecracker Snare:

This is a great little snare. I don't see it as a main snare at all, but I suppose it could be if you realize it is small and prefers a high tuning (which is a normal tension). Has a rimshot crack that kills!I tune it up pretty high (which is easy because it is small), don't want to choke it out though (as I think one reviewer did). The overtones (like found even on expensive drums) can be too much for some so I add a 1/4 strip of a Moongel square near the edge; funny, it just seems to stick on the head very well so I just sort of leave it stuck-on all of the time. Mine came with a coated and slightly textured Pearl Protone head that I have never changed; it seems to do what you would want for this type of drum.Buy it! I have seen it usually offered for [$] which is the price I paid for mine.

I love this little drum! I have using it for a couple of years now. Fits nicely in the trunk and goes everywhere with me. Tunes up really nice and gets a good crisp sound. I did change the factory stock head to an Evans 2 ply head and use a little moon gel to give it that corps snare sound.I have 5 snares but this is one of my favorites! Well made.

Comments about Pearl Wood Firecracker Snare:

This snare should only be used for a side snare, if that. This drum just doesn't project, no matter where or how hard you hit it. I feel the snare has been cheaply made and has a slight ring, even when tuned in many different ways. My advice, keep looking.

The price and sounds of the drum itself are great! The only thing that I don't like are the factory supplied drum heads. They have too much of a plastic ping sound, and a little too much resonance. Other than that, the drum sounds just like its name... a firecracker!

Comments about Pearl Wood Firecracker Snare:

This is a pretty sweet drum. I bought it for that high "Travis barker" type snare sound. It worked great for that use, but other than a high kicking snare sound, it was pretty disappointing. Also, when I brought it into the studio, you could definitely tell it was a small drum, and it sounded very weak.

Comments about Pearl Wood Firecracker Snare:

This snare drum has a very nice pop and crack to it. Very crisp and clear, and surprisingly loud given its size. I have the 10 inch, many say that its only for use as an auxiliary snare drum, for accents and what not. But I use my firecracker as my main snare. Its good for my reggae, funky, r&b sound. Doesn't resonate much at all though, so if your into that, you may want to get the steel version of this drum.
