This snare comes ready to use out of the box, even almost tuned. The shell looks beautiful, almost like a mirror, the bevertail lugs are sturdy, with a classic old-school look, the hoops are great, comes with Remo Ambassador weight heads, and the wires are impressive, very sensitive.
The size and material of this snare give it a very nice pop, and round tone. The shell is made from steel, so expect overtones as usual, but it's nothing that a snareweight or moongels can't fix. Works well with all tuning ranges, specially on low with some dampening, very deep sound.

I was disappointed in the cheap feel of this drum. For instance, the throw-off is very light weight. I bought it as one of Musicians Friend''s deal of the week at half price, so I'll just keep it, but I was tempted to just return it.

Comments about Pork Pie Hip Pig Chrome Steel Snare Drum:

I've missed this on sale several times and made sure I didn't miss it again. I've heard some good things about this snare and I was looking for a good 13" at a good price. When it arrived I was surprised at how deep it was. I knew it was a 7" when I ordered it but it looks deeper in person. It's one beefy drum. Sounds great out of the box. I just tuned up the resonant head to taste and it sang. As a deep shelled steel snare it had a ring that was easily solved with a Moon gel. I would have paid full price had I known how great it sounded. Depending on your setup you may have a problem getting your snare stand low enough for this beast. If you're looking for a good looking snare with a great pop and overall tone, jump on this one. you won't regret it.

Comments about Pork Pie Hip Pig Chrome Steel Snare Drum:

I bought this snare to use with my bop kit for small venues. I was using a 14" Ludwig Bronze but is seemed a bit much for the small kit. I'll admit I decided on this one on 100% reputation. I've never heard a bad thing about Pork Pie. What a great snare. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quality steel snare. Great out of the box, outstanding when tweaked. And I'm still using stock heads! I still carry the bronze, but rarely use it since I've really love the sound of this instrument. Cuts through loud electric gigs and blends beautifully with acoustic / unplugged shows. I've even paired it with a Cajon for a very compact setup. You cannot go wrong with this snare. Pro results at a very reasonable price.

Comments about Pork Pie Hip Pig Chrome Steel Snare Drum:

Figured I would take a chance on a Pork Pie snare. I've had my eye on Pork Pie products for some time now but have never actually been able to test their stuff out. I rolled the dice on this one, not really knowing whether I would like it or not. After playing the thing about 10 times now, I can say that I love it and am glad I took the chance. For the price range you cannot beat this snare. I have a friend who just spent a ton of money on a high end Ludwig USA snare and he said this sounds comparable to his. The first thing I noticed about this compared to the last snare I was using is the volume. This snare is loud, and alive. It is sensitive and responsive. With the 13"- again I took a chance, wasn't sure how it would be playing on a 13" but I actually think I like it better than the 14". One thing about this snare is that it will ring a little bit- it has a long decay. No problem- I just put an Evans ring on it and it kills that sustain, increases the decay and tightens the sound right up. I also loosened the lugs just a tad on both the batter and resonant heads to get the pitch down just a bit till I got the sound where I want it. I like the way it responds to the rim shots. Out of the box I did not like the sound but after tweaking it to my taste (including the addition of the Evans ring) I love the sound. The chrome plating looks amazing, gives it a real professional look. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. This is not a high end snare but for the price you simply cannot go wrong. If you want a high end snare, go buy a high end snare. If you want a good sounding snare at an affordable price with a professional look, this is the snare for you.

Comments about Pork Pie Hip Pig Chrome Steel Snare Drum:

This drum sounds amazing straight out of the box. I got it as a stupid deal of the day, but would definitely consider paying full price if I needed to replace it. The sound is great and the build appears solid. Unfortunately, even at the lowest stand setting, it is still a little too high for me. That is my only reason for knocking off a star. But this is a great drum. I gotta check out their other products!

Comments about Pork Pie Hip Pig Chrome Steel Snare Drum:

Got this drum in the mail today and I was not dissapointed. This is the first "Pork Pie" snare I have ever owned or played. Right out of the box I tuned it with my "Drum Dial" (Top Head:90-Bottom Head:80) with the heads that it came with and the sound it produced was very pleasing. Drum has a bit of a ring to it but nothing that couldn't be solved with a little tape or Moon Gel. Got this drum when it was on the "Stupid Deal of the day" but that just makes the deal even sweeter because I would have picked this drum up for full price if I had to.

Comments about Pork Pie Hip Pig Chrome Steel Snare Drum:

Very cool little drum. I got it on Black Friday and I'm very pleased with it. It does well tuned high, which gives you a loud crack, but it sounds great tuned low, which gives you a more ringy sound. Only downsides are that it shows fingerprints easily, but I can get past that, and the top of the batter hoop is pretty close to the top of the head, so there's not a whole lot of space to get that rimshot sound. I haven't had any trouble with it, but I was planning on sticking a diecast hoop on this guy anyways.
