Got the 14" and tied the stretch skurting, from an old sweatshirt, loosly over the head from 11 to 1 o'clock. The skirting moves with no resistance and can be adjusted very quickly. This took out 85% of the excess ringing, tightened up the bass and pretty much guillotined the synthetic character of the drum. It does not sound as sweet an Oversees Connection skin head Kangaba but has an advantage, due to the key tuning. When striking the drumhead near the tuning keys, the drum has a higher timbre than the halfway point between the keys. It is like that all the way around the head and is noticable from the rim to a little more than 1/3 way to center. Knowing these regions allows your hands to "phrase" any rhythm, with the slaps and teks, like playing the same 'note' on a string instrument but on a 'different' string.Aware of the different timbres, marked by the tuning keys, and playing the first Djembe part of the "Denadon" rhythm, I could actually voice the instrument with 5 distinct cohesive syllables. The drum was talking. And, only been playing for two weeks. The tuning keys on the 14" drum are 6 inches apart. The timbe variance might not be as noticable on the smaller drums. Hope any of that helps

My buddy has this djembe nad uses it in his church's praise band. I just got back to the states from africa 8 days ago and was fortunate enough to bring back an authentic hand carved djembe. if you want the real sound, get the real drum. this one has advantages like light weight, but the tone is very very synthetic. i guess the guy that muted it did a good thing, but you still cant beat wood.

It sounds expensive but this djembe is the best ive ever played. The bass tone is very deep and when you hit the rim it has a perfect sound. Great for live acoustic performances and recording.

ok, well i'm an active drummer, and i really enjoy this drum! I've used it with choirs, with bands, with church groups, all over. i've hauled it everywhere, including on camping trips. this drum has an excellent sound, with a great bass, and nice slaps as well. i've really loved using this drum. it rocks!

simply amazing for acoustic groups

By XgrevilleX

i recently wanted to join an acoustic band, and bongos werent doing me justice...i recently went to go see jason mraz, and the djembe player was amazing. i saw some local indie/alternitive/acoustic/pop/punk bands and the sound of a jembe to me was awsome. i loved the deep pitches and high slaps. i started listening to african music and started going to drumming circles in my area. the sound of a jembe was so beautifull to me. i decided to buy one. i got a wooden one and i like the sound but it wasent exactly what i wanted. i recently saw this one and thought it would be perfect. and so far i wasent wrong. best sound in a djembe ive ever seen. very durable. strong sound. perfect pitch.great!

Fantastic Instrument

I bought this djembe about 6 months ago and it's been amazing. It's without a doubt one of the most versitile drums out there. The bass notes sounds like thunder and the high slaps are awesome accents. I've used it mostly in acoustic situations (accompanied by 2-3 guitars, piano, etc.) and it's performed beautifully. Also, it's built very sturdily. (i accidentally dropped it in my driveway and scraped up the head, but it still plays just as well as it did in the beginning!) Remo did an amazing job with this djembe. A must buy!

Awesome Rocker Djembe

Rock Djembe would be my the first words to describe this djembe. The deep earth shaking rock moving bass is incredable. The high slaps are continuously crisp and clean. I love how this djembe performs. It can be used for any genre. I love to play rock, punk, and jazz. It works for anything at anytime. My only question to you is: Are you ready to rock the planet ? This is awesome. No other words can describe this djembe. I keep falling in love this djembe over and over. Not to mention the sweet black colors. The head looks like marbel. Ready to Rock Now ?

BLACK REMO

Some djembe drummers feel you have to have wood only but I?ll have to say this drum really surprised me. I have a good quality Sageman drum that I love but this drum is just as good. It has good range, light weight, and easy to tune. I have kids running around my house and with this drum I don?t worry about something getting spilled on it.

Incredible range of sound

By Kam.I.am

from St. Pete, Fl

This is a great drum for the price. I have taken it to the beach every weekend, where it sounds excellent. I have accidently dropped it a few times, and it stands strong. The look is attractive, literally; people come over to talk about the drum all the time. The only thing I have to complain about is the head. It has an awesome look, but doesn't sound the same as my other Remo. A wonderful drum for the many circles I go to.Very happy I bought this drum.

This Djembe is fantastic! got it to add some more jungle/african/tribal feels to a couple of really heavy grooves. Also does wonders in a quiet acoustic setting. The color is almost as wicked as the tone. great product.
