Very quick, I've been playing drums for over 30 years, and have an acoustic set. I wanted a great kit, but couldn't afford something on my level (yet). I got this set on sale, and didn't think it would change my life, but the idea of playing anytime I wanted was overwhelming. OOTB, set-up took about an hour, box to playing. I was disappointed by the limitations: single-trigger per pad limited placement options, and relatively small sound library (especially the crash cymbals). However, a week later after some tweaking of the sensitivity settings, and getting the pads in just the right spot, I'm in heaven. It's starting to feel close to a real kit. One thing that has been noted in several places on the 'net is that you can't have a double kick, because of the proprietary nature of the pedal itself, and the small pad size, combined with being unable to handle fast signals. I've adjusted the kick enough to get very natural feeling "ghost" beats with it, but that wasn't enough. Last night, I got smart. The high hat pedal has 3 sounds(!): Closed, Open, and the middle sound which is the closing of the hats from open. YOU CAN ASSIGN A KICK SOUND TO THAT ONE! You can't pull off a few hi-hat sounds when you do it, but it still plays open and closed. But, the BEST part is to play some blazing double-bass. So, if that was keeping you from getting this very reasonably priced "entry-level" kit, there you go. Also, keep in mind that the triggers can be plugged into another module and used just as easily, and incorporated into another/existing kit, so there's that. For me, this was the "beginner" set that is good enough for an "advanced" player, and very affordable. Go for it!

Best to briefly explain events as they happened:
Ordered kit for recording; I am a guitarist. Kit arrived...MANY boxes within boxes. Unpacked all boxes and set up. Missing tom bracket. Called Simmons, customer service person said "newer set and didn't know if they had spare parts for it"! Said call back Musicians Friend. Called back Musicians Friend. Only way to get the one bracket was to re-box the entire set and get a new set!! Ugggh! Contacted Simmons through their website. Problem wasn't a choice on their FAQ area. Finally got an email back with a different number. Called that Simmons number and reached helpful guy. Sent me a new bracket. Set complete 3 weeks later! So frustrated by this whole experience that I would give it 1 star, however, not representative of the drums; just mediocre customer service (the first contact I made to Simmons AND their website). Set is pretty cool however, I noticed what other drummers noticed...hitting multiple drums simultaneously or too fast seems to leave some of the beats out, like they should be more sensitive. In all fairness, you may be able to adjust that out to make them more sensitive; or at least I'm going to try. If you cannot, I'd give the drums two stars; if you can, I'd revise the drums to 4. Time will tell. Jury is still out.

Comments about SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drumset:

I am currently using this kit in a band that plays swing, fox-trot, polkas and waltzes. I had to make a few after-market modifications with the rack-mounted hardware, in order to configure the pads to respond more like a traditional American jazz drum set. NOTE: The Simmons SD300 kit is designed for at-home practice ONLY. If you intend to use this kit as a regular gigging instrument, either you will have to upgrade to the SD500 kit, or else be prepared to re-engineer the entire SD-300 rack mounting system, since there is NO WAY that you will be able to fold this puppy up, so as to fit the set conveniently into the back seat of any average automobile. Additionally, you must be prepared to experiment with different makes and models of drum sticks, since what you may be accustomed to playing with may not be ideally suited for electronic drum set use. There is an annoying tendency for electronic drum set pads to transmit too much "shock" though the shaft of a conventional drum stick, resulting in a mild case of "carpal-tunnel syndrome". There are several types of drum sticks available nowadays, specifically designed for electronic drum set use. Again, all you have to do is experiment. Otherwise, it is a lot of fun to make music on.

Comments about Simmons SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

First off, was very impressed with the construction of this kit - solid construction, extremely easy set-up.
Within an hour I was set up & playing. Lots of nice features - has a demo song & 10 "jam along" song loops, built in metronome. You can plug in your cell phone, laptop, whatever & jam along with your favorite tunes. It's quiet, so you can set it up in an apt. & not bother the neighbors. It's a low cost drum set, so don't go expecting perfection. If it was a high end drum set I would complain about latency issues and sensitivity. But for what it is, it's a perfectly fine practice kit. Am very happy with it, & would definitely buy another Simmons drum set, if needed.

Comments about Simmons SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

For being the lowest price kit in the electric drums category I can't complain. I'm a drummer of 8 years and bought this kit for practicing. First off with a little bit of tweaking the rack and pads are pretty solid, the sound samples programmed in module sound surprisingly good, lots of great options to choose from as well. The only thing that's a bit of a pain are the foot controls. First the bass drum control I found I had a hard time doing fast work with it like such as John Bonham triplets, it is good for basic grooving though. Then the hi hat control is not as fast responding as I would want but it gets the job done, all in all a pretty good e kit. Definitely would recommend for beginners or drummers trying to practice quietly without breaking bank. Also recommend, buy or have a pair of studio headphones with long cord for this.

      Simmons Does It Again!

      By Garrett

Comments about Simmons SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

This kit is simply put amazing! The frame comes pre-assembled and all the pads and cymbals are individually packaged making finding and assembling a breeze! If your looking for the bells and whistles of a $1200+ electronic set this particular kit won't saffice. However, for its relatively affordable price tag and all the pre-programmed kits, individual pad pre-sets , plug n' play midi and mp3 play along connectivity, durable pads and overall design, I'm sure this kit could hang with the best of them. The only major con for me is some minor latency issues. I've played other kits with a more sensitive recoil that allows for uninterrupted drum roll and fill ins without having to sacrifice one sound for another. Often time's either the sound of on instrument gets lost behind another or playing multiple pad's won't allow a particular sound to be played at all until you reconfigure either how you play it or switch to a different pad or pre-set. Maybe it's just my kit but either way if that's the only major flaw I'll continue beating on em' till the heads are no more. Sticks are also included along with a detailed instruction manual and Simmons customer care information. Wasn't sure what to expect when it arrived on my doorstep but overall I'm highly satisfied with my purchase and I'm sure you will be too. Keep Calm and Drum On!

Comments about Simmons SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

First time owning an electric set so at first I was skeptical but, all I can say is wow! This kit has an amazing array tones to choose from and various kits that makes it easy to play any genre of music. Extremely durable stand, very responsive pedals, toms and snare are very durable as well, and easy to assemble. The only problem I ran into was that I assumed that the cymbals were chokable but, unfortunately they are not. Aside from that, this kit is absolutely amazing and with such a low price tag its hard to pass up on. Coming from a guy that only played acoustic kits, this kit has it perfected in all the right places, highly recommended for intro and experienced players.

Bought this based on the reviews. I wanted an electronic kit I could fold up and travel with to practice in hotels rooms/on the road. This seemed perfect. Its more like a cheap Asian made toy. HH trigger didn't work out of the box. HHC assigned wrong function (SN) and could not change it per the instructions. Simmons tried to help fix over the phone- no luck. Something wrong w/controller out of the box. I'll try to find something nicer but still compact. Returning for refund.

I waited for the price to come down. Now that I got the kit I would pay double. I love it. Practice with the headphones or plug in the sound system. You cannot beat this kit. Especially the price. Read the book, you can adjust the mod box for a lot of sounds. Hit one pad and the other plays? Adjust the parameter. Like I said, read the instructions. Excellent job on this set.

Really good set for the price, like someone else said you can change the highhat control pedal to be a kick pedal and play double bass sections, it also still acts as a high hat open and closed when you do so. Sound is really good and I run it through a DAW and play VST drums no issues at all

This Simmons SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drum set is all that it has advertised. To get the best sound I have combined a LINE6 amp to deliver the highs with a Hartke Bass amp to deliver the lows. This setup has met and even exceeded my expectations. My use of this setup is mostly to compliment a home studio.

I bought the Simmons SD 300 Electronic drum set to use a home for practice, After I set it up. The Hi Hat
cymbal and the pedal would not work, swapped out the cables to the other pads, still nothing worked. I called Simmons customer service, they sent me a new cable harness, still no Hi Hat, I tried for 3 days to re program the Hi Hat, it will not work, it must be the control box, I had it. I packed it back up and sent it back for a refund, I would not recommend this kit., I will stick to My acoustic drums.

Disclaimer - I'm a guitarist and composer, not a drummer. I was looking for a compact, inexpensive kit to augment sequenced drum parts for demos before bringing in a real drummer for the final take. It's a great fit for my purposes. Simple to assemble, the pre-labelled wiring harness is a big help, and the velcro straps clean up the loose wiring nicely. While I'm impressed with the quality of the components at the price point, I don't think it's designed to be gigged with constantly. A real drummer will probably find a lot more issues, but for an inexpensive starter or rehearsal kit it's pretty slick. The backorder time was a PITA, but a great sale price made it worth the wait.

Comments about Simmons SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

Bought this for my 13 year old son who has expressed an interest in learning the drums. He has really loved this set, and for the price it's an excellent set! It's probably not going to be suitable for long-term use (he'll need actual drums if he sticks to it), but it was a great deal and a great way to get his feet wet on drumming.

Comments about Simmons SD300 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

Everything works ok when you keep it simple. This kit starts to drop sounds when playing more complicated stuff. I don't know exactly why this is happening, but it seems like it can't handle too many sounds at once. The ride is the worst. I can play the ride on it's own just fine, but even just adding the bass drum and hi hat makes it cut in and out.

This product would be great for a beginner, or somebody willing to lower their expectations in order to practice w/ a budget kit.
