I've had this kit for about 6 months. I'm a 40 year old former trumpet player (high school) that always wished he'd chosen the drums instead. Call it a mid life crisis if you want, but I made my wife buy this for me for Christmas last year. I picked up a Drumeo membership (highly recommended) and got going. Right now, I can novice my way through certain songs and basically have fun with the set from a skill level stand point. I'm a big guy and am not dainty with the set at all. Six months later, everything still works! I've beaten on them pretty good to the point that I'm surprised they still work! So from a durability standpoint I give it top marks. The sound is great with a decent pair of headsets and the number of different electronic drum kit presets is awesome. I think the responsiveness is also pretty good. I'd be lying if I didn't mention that every once in a while it will miss a hit when I'm really playing hard and fast but for the price point, I wasn't expecting perfection here. For the most part, you hit the drum and the corresponding drum sound simultaneously comes through the speaker. What more could you ask for?

Here's what more I would ask for:
- I wish I could purchase another crash cymbal and add it into the kit. Since the kit is not expandable, If you want an additional piece (like a second crash cymbal) you need to re-purpose one of your other pieces (like the ride cymbal). The obvious problem then is that you loose the ride for that particular kit. Would have been nice to be able to expand and not have to sacrifice any of the pieces.

- More volume. Maybe there is a governor on the device so idiots like me won't blow out their ears, but I'd prefer that to by my mistake to make. I have it turned all the way up and still would prefer it to be louder. I'm hoping that by adding a drum monitor into the mix, I'll be able to get the volume level where I want it.

Other than that, I'm very happy and would recommend. Thanks Simmons!

I use this kit for practice because I live in an apartment. It has a decent variety of sounds; most of which are classic rock, pop or hip hop. I would never play a gig with this because a few times throughout a song a hit won't register with a pad (mostly with the snare or cymbals) and always misses kick hits often. I've had my kit for about two weeks and one of the cymbal's rubber is tearing (I don't hit that hard). On the good side: it doesn't take up a lot of space, it has a feature to plug in an iPod and play along with songs as well as a metronome. Overall I am satisfied with my purchase because it is a cheap set and I only use it to practice on.

Comments about Simmons SD500 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

Bought it at my son's drum teacher recommendation - out of the box was easy to put together. Individually packaged parts meant lots of cardboard but also showed some care on the part of the manufacturer. Son dug it and immediately started pounding away. Seems very solid in the construction, lots of additional features that he should grow into, so far so good!

We got this drum set for our son as an upgrade from his original / intro 5-piece acoustic drum set. The variety of voices for the pieces makes practice more fun. Musician's Friend great deal seems even better after we received the product, assembled it, and heard it for the first time.

This is a fantastic set of drums for the price. I have played many years and now wanted a set for home use that I can work with in a relative quiet setting without disturbing others. I can't say enough about this set, solid construction, great sounds and many sets and voices to choose from. They have a relative small footprint so they are easy to place in a small room. The price point on this set is really the home run. This is definitely a set to check out. Musicians Friend was great throughout the ordering process, and FREE SHIPPING is always great. This set should serve me until I quit playing.

Comments about Simmons SD500 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

No other retailer matched Musician's Friend's price. I purchased the 3 year extended warranty as well and that was fairly priced. SD500 was easy to setup I did not even need the instruction booklet. CPU is intuitive and easy to navigate. Both drum and cymbal pads are responsive and take a beating. Crash cymbal pad chokes nicely and is sensitive enough for swells. Only negatives are the pedals. Bass drum is not sensitive enough for successive bass drum hits and I had to adjust the spring to maximize it's effectiveness which still skips beats but it's a mid-level drum kit so I deal with it. Hi hat pedal needs to be totally unpressed by lifting foot totally off the pedal for a full open hi hat sound, not a "real feel". Frequent tightening of the rack is necessary but I play hard.
Overall if you need a kit to practice quietly with and/or need to rehearse songs along with an iPod it's fine. If you need a kit for rehearsal with a live band or in a live performance setting look to go with a higher end kit.

Comments about Simmons SD500 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

I highly recommend pitching the kick petal & upgrading to the Simmons SD 1500 trigger with (in my case) a Tama HP200P Iron Cobra petal. Do this when you buy the kit. This will make a tremendous difference & is more than worth the extra money. You will not regret is as the stock petal is both tight & mushy at the same time with no fast response. Other than that, it is a great sounding, smooth playing, solid kit for the money. My complaints are that the hi hat has very limited versatility of sound and I would love a ride cymbal with several regions where I can play the bell & get a different sound. That said, after looking into more expensive kits, this seems to be common in electronic drums. The crash does allow you to choke the cymbal which is nice.

It is easy to compact & travels well in my little car. I am a bit concerned about the longevity of the hardware since I have to really tighten clamps to keep it stable but so far so good.

I'm the drummer for the Adam Parker band in Charleston WV.

I use this kit for rehearsals so I don't have to transport my acoustic kit.... love it.... it's a full size kit arrangement...... it folds up.....it sounds great through the Simmons DA50 amp..... I've even gig'd with it a couple times without anything going wrong....no one's ever complained about the sound quality or it's looks..... but it's NOT of sufficient quality or durability to confidently gig with...... I've owned high end Yamaha electronic kits and you immediately notice the difference in quality, but that's to be expected for a kit at this price.

I see comments about miss triggering.....if you properly adjust the sensitivity and x- talk, that should solve this problem.

The kit is pretty durable as long as you don't beat it to death...... the wires in my kick trigger eventually fatigued and broke..... but it was still under warranty.... and Simmons sent me a new one no questions asked..... and let me keep the old one.....( I re-soldered the wires, now I have a spare).

( when the kick pedal failed at rehearsal, I placed tom 2 pad down under the kick mallet and finished rehearsal.... try that with an acoustic kit.)

I personally wouldn't buy a more expensive electronic kit for rehearsals or just playing for fun.

I've attached a picture of the kit folded up,....and VIDEO so you can hear what the kit is capable of.
