Ordered this set for my two teenagers, who both play percussion in band at school. Was somewhat smaller than what I anticipated, but works well for the space we have. I don't have a clue myself what makes a "good" kit, I have no musical skills; my nephew who is a professional drummer came over, set it up and tuned it. His opinion was that it was a nice kit--for the price. My son says the snare "could sound better" and says it should have "suppressors". I don't know what that means myself but... If either of my kids end up pursuing this more seriously, we can always upgrade.

I do need to comment that the snare head broke almost immediately. I contacted musician's friend and they sent me a new snare head, no charge and absolutely zero hassle. Even I can see that this new snare head is of a much higher quality than the one that came with the kit. Many of the other reviews I see have mentioned this same problem with the factory head; but with the excellent customer service I had with MF, I don't see that as a big issue.

So, I've had this set for a few years now, and it is just terrible. The shells are ok, but the hardware and stock heads just stink. I have several pieces and parts that can not be replaced, therefore I now have to buy either new replacement drums, or a whole new set. I think I'll stick with the new set idea. The cymbals are cheap and unworthy of even being called cymbals. I think the one good thing about the set is the shells, and the cymbal stands. Even the snare stand has a piece broken off of it. And it's not because I'm careless; it;s because it is cheap.

Who knew?!

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

My main kit is a 4 piece DW, which I love. But once I started taking it out to shows and bars, I was always worried about it being stolen, kicked, sat on, whatever.... So I wanted to buy a kit that could take a beating, be worry-free, look good, and most importantly, SOUND GREAT! Shortly after I ordered it, I received the kit all in 1 big box!! Ha!! The stands were ok, but I wasn't planning on using them... the snare looked ok, but I wasn't planning on using that either. I really just wanted the bass, floor and mounted tom. I still used my DW stands, stool, kick pedal, and snare, but used the rest of the Sound Percussion drums... I had also ordered Remo FiberSkyn heads for the drums. After putting on the new heads and tuning them up, I was SHOCKED! The kit sounded SOOOO good. I soon brought it out to a gig and got compliments on the sound... I use it at practices and gigs all the time now, and it still sounds amazing. I've been consistently using it now for months, while my DW stays safely at home. And while I do take care of my equipment, I don't worry about this kit being damaged... and for those of you who play the bars, you know how that can be!I can't recommend this kit enough to those of you looking for a first kit or just a practice or gigging kit... if you know how to tune drums, the possibilities are endless.

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

i am a college student, and i have my drums at my school. when i come home for the summer, I have nothing to play on except my practice pad, so i wanted to get a second set, and at first when looking at this set, i was a little put off because sound percusion is not a "top" line, so to speak. but after purchasing, all i can say is wow! these are mahagany shells, so they cant sound but so bad, and they dont, they sound great!! and the hardware is quite desent also! this is a great set for the price! i would get coated heads if i were you though, it just really brings out the warmth in the tone!

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

Got this kit over three years ago for my 10th birthday. All I have from the original set is the toms and bass drum. I broke the snare head within months. But I finally got the tom & floor tom tuned decently w/ stock heads. I put a hole in the resonant head of the bass and got a new batter head cuz i broke it a while back. But, its a decent set for beginners. Although, I recommend changing all of the heads. And The hardware/cymbals should be replaced as well.

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

The first week I had this set, i had to replace the snare head. I don't hit my drums as hard as I can. Mt friend has a drum set and he has had it 3 times as long as I have had mine and he has not had to replace one thing and still sounds great. I were you, I would not buy this set.

This is my third attempt to write a review for something I bought over 200.00!!! For some reason MF will not publish my review. They charged me shipping for an item, when their site said they would not.

And the item is not that great to begin with. I'll keep this short as I'm sure it will not be published. But I will be contacting MF, at a higher level than the webmaster. So enjoy that. It's coming! Maybe on a Monday. : )

    Sounds great with new heads

    By someone-IcS2q

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

I bought this kit to use for gigs, since it has a smaller bass drum and floor tom. The hardware that it comes with is pretty lightweight and cheap, but I guess its ok for beginners, and its definitely a great value to include hardware at this price. I put some new Aquarian heads on this set, and a Remo Ambassador on the snare, and it makes a great little kit for shows. The snare is sensitive and the bass drum is pretty punchy. It's probably not as loud as my other kit, which has a 22 inch bass and 16 inch floor tom, but it can definitely be heard through the mix.P.S. - the rack tom is actually 12x8, and the snare has 8 lugs, not 6, which was nice.

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

I've had this kit for almost a year now. It's not magical or anything but it's gotten me by for a few gigs. The kick drum lugs don't stay adjusted in the slightest, and from all the constant tweaking I had to do two of the claws broke on me. The toms and snare for the most part stay tuned-ish. It's a good kit and served me well I'm looking to buy something more now, but this will do you fine if you're kinda stripped for cash like I was.

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

I purchaced this as a practice set/acoustic set with triggers. No kit has great stock heads, so I replaced them with Evans EC2's with an EQ3 bass drum pack. This kit can deliver a good sound and the drums resonate very well. They are easier to transport due to their sizes and record very well. The hardware hasn't failed me yet, but isn't my personal choice for super duty hardware. I wish they would make this as a shell pack.

This drum set is very nice and very good sounding. I got this set at the begginning of april but couldnt open it till my b-day which is in 2 hours. Anyways the floor tom is smaller than I thought but it sounds amazing. I did not expect the heads that came with it were already on it and sounding good. So if I were you get this set cause you would be impressed on what it sounds and looks like.

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

This would be a great kit for buying if you intend to quit right away and set it on fire. This is a beginners kit but it didn't last a year and I don't play hard or that often. Everything on this thing snaps, breaks, sounds horrible, or needs constant fixing. Not durable at all. Make 50 more bucks and buy something 10x better.

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

Its really a sweet set. I mean, sure, its only a 4 piece, if you want more, then buy a double bass add on pack. The heads aren't really THAT bad. People just over react, since they aren't the best, when really, a bit of tuning is all that you need.On a side note: don't judge the set because of the picture. I thought that it looked puny at first, but once I got it assembled, it was pretty big. Overall, this set is a must-buy for anyone looking for quality in a cheap set.

    Great value for younger players

    By Anonymous

Comments about Sound Percussion SP 4 Piece Drum Kit with Hardware:

I bought this for my 10 year old son. While he's big for his age, I still didn't want to get him a full size 22" kit yet. This SP 4-pc kit, with 20" bass drum fit him and was so affordable it allowed the purchase of upgraded Sabians with better B20 alloy, which sounds incredible with this drum set. There is nothing yet to complain about on the quality of the drums and I'm surprised with the low price for what you get. We preferred the warmth of the Asian "mahogany" shells, the smaller diameter drum size and the fact it came with some hardware. The heads of course will have to be replaced soon. One thing I took a precaution with was to lightly sand the rather sharp beads of the bass drum when installing the heads. Again, I would stress doing some homework on cymbals as they are a real investment, and affect the sound a great deal. Get the better metal! Finally, the snare is actually fine for beginner/intermediates but could be replaced, maybe with a metal one, as the drummer develops. All in all this 4-pc. set is an incredible value that leaves room for some higher quality cymbals. The 5 piece version is about the same decent quality, the shell diameters are larger and comes with Agopolypsian cymbals which hurt my ears before even hearing them. But I believe the hardware is upgraded for the 5 pc.
