This is an outstanding drum kit and truly great value! The professional features, appearance and sound of this kit are Grade A all the way. I'll address each drum individually but here are some general observations about the kit: The construction quality is excellent. The bearing edges were absolutely flawless on all 4 drums. I've seen kits that are 4 times the price that didn't have bearing edges as good as this kit. Also, I was amazed that the toms and snare had 2.3mm hoops included-something unheard of on a kit this price. I even got my caliper out to double check my thinking: yep 2.3mm! Outstanding!I appreciate the coated heads on the batter sides. The heads are stock and not "First Run" Remos, but the coateds are better than the clears in my opinion. The resonant side heads are unbranded smooth whites, but they feel like Ambassador weight heads. Most kits at this price have clear diplomat or snare side weight reso heads! The silver sparkle wrap has a very "tight" and small sparkle pattern which looks absolutely amazing!

Bass Drum: It's almost unheard of for a kit at this price to come with wood hoops. And the hoops are fully wrapped on the outside, instead of having just a 1/2" or 3/4" inlay. These are also the thickest and most well built bass drum hoops I have ever seen. Super great quality! The claw hooks are die cast, which is another great professional feature unheard of at this price point. The spurs are very solid, and only have two positions: Fully extended or fully retracted. These is a nice feature because they are solidly in place either way (notched joints fit inside each other) and so you don't have to guess in a dark club! The tom mount is very solid and easy to adjust. My only knock on the bass drum is that the stock heads are not self muffled. But, this is a very easy fix and I also enjoyed playing a wide open bass drum sound for a change. It has a very Bill Stewart like sound tuned about mid-range, and I found it useful to have better bass drum control because it's wide open and boomy, so easy does it (helps teach you subtlety with your foot!). Also, with a wide open sound, you can get two tones out of the bass drum, 1/2 step apart by simply pulling the beater away, and leaving the beater buried. It was fun to play this way with the non-muffled heads. I also appreciate the SLP logo on the front head in Silver instead of the traditional black. It matches the kit and looks classy!

Rack Tom: The suspension mount and bracket work very well, and with the memory lock it was held solidly in place. The 7" x 10" size really makes it easy to position. It tuned up nice and easy!

Floor Tom: It was easy to get a nice tone out of the floor tom quickly. The legs are a bit shorter than standard legs, but the brackets are down far enough on the shell that you still have a good range of height adjustment. My only knock on the floor tom is that the leg brackets are not the clamping style like the rack tom bracket. Instead, these have a T-screw that tighten directly against the legs. These type of brackets will gouge the legs over time and eventually will strip out with extended use. It seems odd that SPL would use two different types of brackets on this kit, but maybe these leg brackets are the same as on another SLP kit, so who knows? Anyway, that's a minor complaint!

Snare drum: The factory snares are fine, and I was able to tune this up and get a really nice "crack" out of it! The one head scratcher for me on this kit is the strainer SLP used. It is solid black and made of plastic. Every other piece of hardware on this kit is chrome, including the butt plate. It seems odd that they would use a black, plastic strainer when everything else on this kit is excellent quality (save the floor tom brackets). Also, I saw on other SLP kits, even ones with black hardware, they use a chrome strainer! Like I said, this is a head scratcher to me. Why not use a chrome strainer? The strainer works fine, but it sticks out like a sore thumb! Also, one of the drum key operated bolts on the butt plate stripped out on me the very first time I tightened it. Not a big deal and is an easy replacement, but the quality could have been a little better there.

Overall, this is a great sounding kit and you get so many professional features for such a small price. My minor gripes aside, I 100% recommended this kit to anyone, and I have already used it on professional gigs, and everything performed flawlessly, and sounded great doing it. I am really impressed with this kit. 5 stars all the way!

I purchased this so that I could have a kit with a small footprint. I used it for a church conference last week and was well please. My only issue was having to adjust tuning on the toms a couple of times. That comes with breaking in new heads. I am excited about using them again.

Comments about Sound Percussion Labs Street Bop Birch Ply 4-Piece Shell Pack:

Just got these yesterday and set them up. The whole set came in one box that was not very big, I was looking for another one. Finish looks really good. I love the wood hoops. Tom mount is sturdy. Heads seem pretty good. I was just shopping for a floor tom for my other kit and always wanted one of these jungle/jazz kits. I was really leaning towards the SONOR safari for the breakbeats, but these are just as good. My drummer has the breakbeats and I think these are as good if not better. I plan to leave them set up in our practice space/ studio, so I wanted an 18" over a 16" bass drum. Still has a fat sound and overall footprint of the set is small. I really can't see anything bad about this set. I blown more money on a night out with nothing to show for it. Not sure why you would pay 3-4 times as much, but to each their own.

Comments about Sound Percussion Labs Street Bop Birch Ply 4-Piece Shell Pack:

This kit is perfect for those limited space gigs or home practice. If you're going to gig with it, plan to invest in heads for both sides since the stock ones are not very good. I just threw on some Evans G1's and they sound great. If you are just using it for home practice you can probably work with the supplied heads. The only other major upgrade needed is a bass drum lift for your kick pedal.

Comments about Sound Percussion Labs Street Bop Birch Ply 4-Piece Shell Pack:

This kit is pretty awesome. It only took me about 15 minutes to set it up out of the box. I really like the size and portability of this kit, and the fact that it was so inexpensive (I got mine on sale). The toms sound pretty good, especially the floor tom. The snare however isn't the best. There is a plastic piece that tightens the snare, which is a bummer. Also, almost all of the lugs were hard to tighten and had to be oiled. I will need to replace the heads sometime soon, they aren't horrible but aren't great either. Overall this is a great kit and I am happy with my purchase.

Comments about Sound Percussion Labs Street Bop Birch Ply 4-Piece Shell Pack:

Exceptional kit for the investment. I use this for small and street gigs. No room for my Yammies. Every part that came out of the box was a pleasant surprise. Beautiful finish, solid wood bass hoops with die cast lugs, very nice suspension mount for tom, 2.3 rims on other drums. I did replace the heads but most drummers would anyway. We all have our preferences. I stripped all the hardware off the snare to evaluate the build and aside from the plastic throw off and stock heads, it was a well built drum. Excellent bearing edges, rubber gaskets on lugs, flat rims and shell, glued wrap and in-round shell. The badges are mounted with screws and the port is mounted with a nut and washer. These features are unexpected for a kit of this level. This is clearly sold as a shell pack so stands and pedals are not included. I am very impressed with this set and the price tag is amazing considering what's available in a bop configuration for twice or 3 times the price. Once tuned and re-headed it sounds great. Definitely up there with the big dogs.

Comments about Sound Percussion Labs Street Bop Birch Ply 4-Piece Shell Pack:

very impressed. bought this kit so I would not have to take out the big rig all the time. mic'd up, they sound just as big as any larger set. I use double pedals - the kick sounds great. however, good heads made the difference. I knew we would probably replace the heads, was hoping not to, but the stock heads didn't cut it. for the kick, Remo Powerstroke 3 on the batter and resonant side. these heads take out the un-needed overtone, but do not deaden the kick. just enough to hit the sweet spot. (I did try an Evans Emad, but it deadened the tone too much. toms, went with a 20ml, Aquarian Onyx 2-ply head. these heads help deepen the tone of the smaller toms and have the perfect amount of overtones (reverb) without any muffling. the snare is a con - way too much overtone and the snare throw-off does not work well. with it in the off position the snares are still rattling. they should be quiet and the snare sound more like a tom. can not shut them off. I replaced the snare batter head, with an Evans Heavyweight reverse dot snare head. it sounds better, but still has too much overtones. so, I've been using my 14" snare off my big kit and it sounds awesome with this smaller kit. plan to try a couple more things with the 13" snare later.

would I buy again, yes. just plan more cash for good heads and the kit will sing.
Rating - I'm taking off a star because of the snare drum. SPL - if you would like to offer suggestions, I'm all ears....right now I'm planning a better snare throw off and better snare strands. I purchased a new resonant hazy head, I have not installed it yet, don't feel it will make a significant difference. but, I will replace it when I change out the throw off. if it sounds like poop after that......well.......it will probably collect dust.

Comments about Sound Percussion Labs Street Bop Birch Ply 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I've been playing this kit live with my band for about 6 months. We do classic rock, a mix of covers and originals. Put Evans G2 coated heads on the toms, and used the stock batter heads (Remo UT coated) as resonant heads. Put an Evans EMAD on the kick beater side, and an Evans '56 Calftone on the front. Pleased with the kick and tom tones for sure. I use no damping on those drums at all, but with the heads I have on them, they are controlled and warm, but have presence. This is what I was after.

The snare remains an enigma. I left the stock reso head, and put an Evans 360 Dry on top. No real issues with the drum's tone, but as many have said, the throwoff is not ideal. I've been able to make the drum work for live use, but I still don't feel like I have it figured out. I'm looking for a thick snare, and the shell can give that, and the only muffling I use is one Moon Gel. The strainer is limited, though. It is never off. I think I just may need to play with it some more. The one good thing I will say about the strainer, is that it stays where you put it. I tend to use it in a "half off" position. If it is "on", it is too tight, and it chokes the sound and sensitivity too much. I suspect I just need to play around with it more and learn how to love it. If not, I'll replace the strainer. Its an easy and cheap fix, and the snare shell itself is quite good, at least for my use. Anyway, this is a fabulous little kit that sounds bigger than it looks. Just plan on putting good heads on it, and maybe replacing the snare strainer or going to another snare drum. As an aside, the finish looks really nice on stage under lights.

I got this little shell pack 3 months ago as a 2nd workout set. The bass batter head is now the E-mad 2, level 360 and I use a boom stand to support the tom instead of the bass drum. I like Remo Emperor or Evans heads but for now, the original heads with E-rings really good.
I had a fixed budget in mind when I bought this practice kit and being a scratch and dent sale item made it a no brainer. I play Pearl and had extra stands and cymbals around to complete this little set. Even a practice pad set cost more than these little jewels. Sound Percussion Labs are a great value.

I bought this to be a rental kit for students, and It's great for that purpose or as a first drum set. I'm a Berklee Graduate, a pro teacher and performer for a living, a published author with a drum instruction book available, a Vic Firth and Evans endorser, a columnist for Drumhead Magazine (the best drummers mag in my opinion) and the owner of 9 custom made or high end vintage drum sets. That said, this is not the same quality as the previous mentioned drums. But, it's incredibly affordable, well made, and will serve you professionally if need be. It makes for a perfect rental set, or practice space set. I wish I had a starter set like this one when I first began. If you put high quality heads, preferably Evans, on them, they'll sound great. The only downside is the snare strainer, it's the only piece that feels like its price. Otherwise, the kit is great.

I bought this kit to replace my aged and very worn Pearl Export and I wanted something with a smaller footprint. This kit is a great buy for the money. I put Evans g1's on the toms and they sound phenomenal. Plenty of resonance and a nice, clear tone with a great tuning range. I didn't expect much from the snare after reading reviews but I cranked up the top and bottom (stock) heads and got a good sound without too much effort. I feel the snare side head is a little thick for my liking. It seems to not be particularly sensitive and dries the drum out a fair bit. I will be putting and Evans Hazy 300 on it soon enough. That should solve that. I have had difficulties with the bass. I don't have an 18" head that I can use and the stock heads are totally open. No dampening rings or anything of the sort. I like an open bass drum but it's a tad too much for me. I tried a small blanket in there but it totally killed the sound. I'll be purchasing an Evans Emad coated here soon and pulling that blanket out. Hopefully that gives me the sound I'm after. I'm not a heavy hitter so the hardware is more than enough to stand up to years of my playing. But it seems plenty durable for even heavier players. The wrap looks great and the shells were all in round work smooth bearing edges. Overall the kit is a great buy and worth way more than you pay.

Good kit for the price. Got rid of the stock heads and put Remo all around with a kickport in the bass. Did the street jam and small club gigs with it and it did very well...

Comments about Sound Percussion Labs Street Bop Birch Ply 4-Piece Shell Pack:

This drum set is very versatile. I can honestly say I did struggle with tuning the snare, and I don't think there is a way to avoid some type of muffling on the snare. I struggled with the bass drum tuning as well, but I threw a towel in it and I got the sound I wanted. I can play rock on this set, some gospel, and do a drum solo, and the set will give me what I want.
