Tama's bubinga drums offer a sound that's unparalleled in the drum world.

The Tama Starclassic Bubinga 4-Piece Shell Pack includes a 22" x 18" bass drum, 10" x 8" and 12" x 9" mounted toms, and a 16" x 14" floor tom.

It was time for something new in drums. Tama found that something in African bubinga wood, which is approximately 53% harder than maple and birch. Starclassic Bubinga shells are slightly thicker than those in Tama's Starclassic maple series. Tama's builders concluded that a slightly thicker bubinga shell brought out the best characteristics of the wood: a more aggressive attack, a fuller deep/dark tone, a more powerful resonance, and unbelievably rich, fat lows. These drum shells are made of 8-ply bubinga plus one outer ply maple shell for optimal finish characteristics. Tom drum plies are 7mm thick, bass drum plies are 8mm thick.

The Star-Cast Mounting System has always provided maximum resonance and stability for Tama's pro-drums. Now it has a more streamlined designed, making it easier to position toms closer together. In addition, a switch to aluminum provides lighter weight and even truer tonal vibration. Star-Cast is also now plated to match your drum's shell hardware.

Hoops not only affect drum tuning, they also affect drum sound. That's why the choice of hoops was so important to the designers of Tama's professional drum lines. For the Starclassic Bubinga, Tama chose zinc die-cast hoops, which are manufactured by injecting molten metal into molds. Die-cast hoops have more density and are more consistent in shape than triple-flanged hoops, which are manufactured by bending metal plates. Die-cast hoops make tuning more consistent and easier to achieve because the tension bolts always contact the hoop properly. Drums fitted with die-cast hoops also offer crisper attack, clear and resonant highs and much more powerful rim shots.

Starclassic's claw hooks feature rubber spacers that help protect wood hoops from damage. The hooks and hoops work as one unit and won't separate or rattle, even on loose tunings.

Tama's MSB30 die-cast bracket holds the spur bracket securely, thanks to the same powerful hinge mechanism used on the MTB30 mounting bracket. Unique memory markers found on the folding spur bracket help simplify set up.

Starclassic's Air Pocket rubber feet feature a special air chamber, that eliminates the transfer of vibrations to the floor (which chokes sustain and sound) and absorbs shock for better playing.

The Hold Tight washer is a totally new and unique invention: a non-loosening washer. Its cup-shaped stainless steel washer contains a rubber ring so the tension rod pushes both the cup washer and the rubber ring. Normally, vibrations will eventually loosen the tension rod. But the softness of Hold Tight's rubber ring keeps it in contact with both the tension rod and the hoop at all times and maintains friction between them, so that tension is always preserved.

Evans drum heads are featured on all Starclassic Bubinga drums (except bass drum front heads). On the rack and floor toms, Genera G2 2-ply clear batter heads and Genera G1 1-ply clear bottom heads provide both durability and solid sound. Starclassic bass drums are fitted with Genera EQ4 clear batter heads.

Comments about Tama Starclassic Bubinga 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I bought Tama starclassic maple gold burst finish made in japan 2003 ,very high in quality. I 've heard coments about Chinesse made tamas . The new bubinga I just bought made in china are flawless in craftmanship, inside lable states they are hand made, sound is fabulos, these drums look ten times more beauitful than pics on web can show, the moghany burst finish is like a peice of glass , black nickle hardware really sets it off, I like the sound of these better than the Tama maple kit I have. I was a little leary about china but not now

Best Kick Drum Ever!

By Todd Bernsdorf

Comments about Tama Starclassic Bubinga 4-Piece Shell Pack:

Let me begin by saying I don't own the Chinese made version of this kit. I own a Japanese made version. I also own a Tama Starclassic birch and an older Tama Artstar Maple kit. The fit, finish and detail on all three is stupendious. I can't imagine the Chinese made versions being anything less.

Of the three, the bubingas are my favorite. The kick drum is the best I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot over the years. It's loud. Consequently, you can feel it as well as hear it. It's like playing in a club with a sub-woofer. The punch of the kick always elevates whoever I'm playing with. It's quite amazing.

The toms sound great too. Compared to my maple toms, the bubingas have a deeper, darker tone -- they have a vintage, aged wood quality. Both the maple and bubingas have a full, well balanced tone, while the birch is much brighter and lacks low end. For recording, the birch easily cuts through the mix, but to my ears, it's not a full bodied sound. I prefer the maple or bubinga.

In conclusion, I think this is the best kit on the market for just about any style of music, except for traditional jazz. I can't imagine trying to feather the kick drum in a jazz setting. Outside of possible a Brady or a Yamaha Phoenix, I can't think of another kit I'd want to play.
