A crisp, clean snare with the warm tone of maple.

This is a 14" x 6", 20-lug Absolute Maple Snare Drum from Yamaha. Absolute Maple series drum shells are crafted using North American maple. Maple produces a round, warm tone with a good mix of overtones from high to low. Yamaha's maple drums have a wide dynamic range and long sustain.

Staggered Diagonal Seam/Air Seal System:
The heart of any drum is the shell, and Yamaha's method of handcrafting shells produces the strongest, most consistent drums available. Yamaha drums feature a staggered diagonal seam to ensure a shell that starts cylindrical, stays cylindrical, and will not require any putty filler in the bearing edges to fill voids between the plies. The Air Seal System of clamping the plies in the mold provides the same pressure 360 around the shell to make sure the glue is evenly distributed. This is key to the consistency of Yamaha shells.

Absolute Lug:
Back by popular demand, the sleek, classic design of the original Absolute lug is now the standard lug in the Absolute series. This lug anchors to the shell at the nodal point using a single bolt, reducing the number of holes in the shell. The small size of the lug allows it to make very little contact with the shell, and reduces the amount of shell vibration that is dampened.

Vent holes:
The number of, and placement of, the vent holes plays an important role in a drum's sound by affecting the attack, sustain, and tone. Through exhaustive research and testing of many prototypes, Yamaha has discovered the optimal number and placement of the vent hole in each drum. This Absolute Maple snare has a single vent hole.

High-quality lacquer finish:
Yamaha was the first company to use high-quality lacquer finishes on their drums. Each lacquer finish is sprayed, sanded, and buffed by hand to create a drum that looks as beautiful as it sounds.

Comments about Yamaha Absolute Maple Snare Drum:

My overall opinion is fantastic products at fantastic prices.
I have the Absolute Maple Neuveau in 4 X 14 Apple Sparkle Fade and it is incredible. I sold my other maple snares (well, except for a 1960 Rogers Holiday) after I got this snare because, even though it almost qualifies as a picollo, it definately sounds much "fatter." Very happy with it and cannot forsee ever replacing it. This drum has my highest recommendation, it is killer for any musical style.
You just can't build a better drum. An equal drum, maybe, but not better.
I think Yamaha is overpriced based on the fact they are out of my price range but you really do get what you pay for. The only problem with the drum is replacement parts cost. The snare tightening screw was slightly bent when I got it (I bought the drum used) so I decided to get a replacement. Yamaha doesn't sell strainer parts for the Absolute Series, only the entire strainer. So, I lightly pounded it out and it worked.

Comments about Yamaha Absolute Maple Snare Drum:

I own this exact snare ( purchased from another seller before Musician's Friend had it available ). This snare has a sound I really love. Super thin shell, dry but not too dry, large sweet spot, crisp, poppy when hit firmly, slightly papery, somewhat airy, senstive and warm. The snares blend perfectly with the thin shell maple sound. Ring starts slowly from the edges of the sweet spot and has nice quick decay for Jazz This is a great jazz snare at medium and high tuning. Plenty loud and senstive. At low tuning it has some unpleasant overtones and is not reccomended. If you like the low " blap " rock snare sound this is not your shell.Center hit rimshot has a wonderful chirpy bark. It has body but it's a beautiful midrange body, warm, but still cutting, not dull, super crisp, but not harsh, right there in the sweet maple middle. Not much low body, but the body it has is perfect for Jazz IMHO. Snare is nothing exiting to look at, but clean and simple maple appearance.
