Where to begin...

This Drum Kit is phenomenal!! Yamaha thought through every detail. Starting from the ground up, the Big Leaf Mahogany is warm, deep, and present on stage. The matte black is amazing to look at, and you can feel it. The wrap has a texture that you want to run your hand across!
The Kick - The spurs conveniently click into place, with markers around it for help in positioning, the lugs on the bass drum are rubberized where it touches the hoop, so no matter how low you tension the head, no metal rattles (Which is true of every metal aspect of this kit, no rattling whatsoever). This 22x18 bass drum commands any setting, and demands attention. The lack of a mount for toms does more for the quality of the sound of the bass drum than you would think, not mention forcing you to look like you know what you're doing. The exclusive Rock Tour logo is nothing if not appealing to the eye. The battleship chevron logos, though small, give it a little extra something. The Rack Tom - The 12x9 rack tom is nearly perfection. The YESS mounting system is the next best thing to suspension mounting. The mount is pulled away from the shell, minimizing contact, and what little contact there is is rubberized. The mount is positioned as to where the screws are on the nodal point of the drum, so as to choke the drum as little as possible. There is a felt pad on the shell right behind the mount, so the bar running through won't scratch the shell. The drum sustains beautifully, with warmth and welcomeness. I have a Remo ambassador on bottom and a Remo Black Suede Emperor on top. The badge is in two places, so that if you're set up with the 10 and 12, or the 12 and 13, you have a badge showing. Rack toms come in 10x7, 12x9 and 13x10.The Floor Tom - Deep, warm, and juicy. Resonates beautifully. It resonates forever; you can't seem to stop it. Comes in Yamaha's largest size, 16x14, with the smaller available. Overall, a beautiful kit, nearly perfect. Only things (and these are nit-picky) that I would change. An 8x5 tom, so my OCD will be happy with an 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 setup. Maybe even an 18?No mounts on the toms; just that extra step!I wish there were a 24" kick choice. But that's just me!
This kist demands to be played, recorded and beheld. A fine job by a fine company. This is the reason that Yamaha is on top!

I got this kit a little over a week ago and I was super excited. Opened it up and man, the blue metallic finish is AMAZING. Kit didn't even look real! Got it all set up tuned (DEF not the easiest drumset to tune, it took a long time!) The biggest issue is that there wasnt a tom mount in the box. I called up musicians friend and they said they would report it to the parts dept and I'd get a call in 48 hours....Well never got one so I called. They dont stock just the mount so they have to contact yamaha to ship it to them so they can ship it to me. Big fiasco and a pain in the butt. So I'm sadly returning the kit.
But on the drums...like I said the finish is frickin amazing! I LOVE the kick drum too. such a PERFECT sound! and its a cannon! the floor tom equally as deep and punchy. unfortunately the 12" tom without the mount I put it on a snare stand and it has ZERO resonance to it whatsoever. sounds nice but I cant be a judge for that. I overall would recommend this kit and especially for this price! UNBEATABLE!

    • Thin Out-of-round Shells

    Best Uses

Comments about Yamaha Rock Tour 3-Piece Shell Pack:

High expectations for these Yamaha Drums were dashed as soon as I opened the box, removed the bass drum heads with the cardboard and saw the bass drum was at least half an inch out of round. The rim made it obvious as there was a large gap between it and the shell in one area. Then looking at how wafer thin all shells were, I called Musiciansfriend and they graciously set up a return. No need to unpack or examine further. No plans to ever order Yamaha Drums again. In my way of thinking; wafer thin shells with no reinforcing are not durrable.

Comments about Yamaha Rock Tour 3-Piece Shell Pack:

I gotta say that I think this kit is solid, especially for the amount you spend. I actually love the thin shells and the sound the bring to the table. Never will worry about being out of round, ain't gonna happen. I built a set 15 years ago with paper thin 5 ply maple shells and they are still going strong. These drums are very versatile too, Friday nights I play with a Rock/Country band and then I leave the kit set up for Saturday when I play with a Jazz group. Change out my cymbal set up tweak the tuning a little, and I am ready to go. Drums sound warm and project quite well and I actually don't even mic them up on the Jazz set up. Very easy to tune also. Stock heads do well but you can customize to your liking. Came with out the Tom arm but MF customer service fixed that right away. Also purchased the snare for this kit and I love that too. Grab um while you can!

Comments about Yamaha Rock Tour 3-Piece Shell Pack:

This kit is well-made, sounds great and is easy to tune. The YESS mount is awesome. It easily allows you to angle the tom in any position. The shells are fairly light weight which makes it easy to transport for gigs. I've played many pro level kits over the years and considering the price range of this kit, it is a great buy. I would definitely recommend.

Comments about Yamaha Rock Tour 3-Piece Shell Pack:

The snare drum is all the same material in a ten lug snare drum. No it is not a boutique drum, but the sound is terrific and the black matt finish and gun metal on the hoops are solid...no cracks or chip on the rims. Don't let the price deter you...this is a very high quality set and the "Big Leaf" mahogany is similar to the Ludwig shells of yore. VERY GOOD PRODUCT.
They would do much better to use a 14" floor tom or a shorter 16". Too bad they limited the selling demographic to "rock."

These drums are a steal. With the triple flanged hoops they tune up easily and stay in tune. The shells seem thin but since they are mahagony I suppose they will keep their round and the sound is fantastic. What I love about this Rock Tour set is that they are responsive at any volume. They sound great when played soft or hard. Their small footprint for the high quality is the second best feature.

I really like what the specs of this instrument presented. I love the sound of mahogany and this set has nice tone. Very Light-a plus for a working musician and looks sharp. The shells are super thin and it's most evident in the bass drum. Though most of the fit and finish was perfect, one of the bass drum hoops is a bit larger than it should be. Regardless I dig this kit and would still recommend it to gigging musicians. I have the silver matte and it shines in it's own unique way.
