Fabulously cost effective!
The level of equipment and manufacturing techniques found in Yamaha's Rydeen 5-Piece Drum Set easily equals that of kits costing hundreds more. The 6-ply Philippine mahogany shells are built with Yamaha's Air Seal System, providing exceptional durability. The bass hoop is made of real wood with an inlay that matches the shell. All hardware is double-braced and the set includes a pair of ball clamp mounts and tom holders. Cymbals not included.

So let me start by saying that I read every review for nearly all acoustic sets on the market -not only from Musician's Friend but also from all of their competitors. Needless to say, it was quite the exhausting experience. My goal, therefore, is to try to save the rest of you some time and give you a comprehensive review of this drum kit versus other sets. Hopefully, you will find this informative.First of all, let me say what a pleasure it is to deal with Musician's Friend. I have dealt with them for years and have never had a bad experience. I have refered friends and bandmates on to this site and they have all been pleased too. I don't meant to sound like a commercial, but I really feel this way. I have contacted sites such as zzounds.com and ams.com and their tech people don't hold a candle in terms of service, guidance or general knowledge. Onto the set...This kit has been fantastic for me. The bass drum has a nice punch and the toms have very little overtone. The snare doesnt quite have that "crack" that I was looking for, but overall, still has a great sound. i am still using the heads which came with it- which are single-ply, clear remos. I had intended to replace them with coated ambassadors, but I have taken a liking to the sound they produce. This is my frst experience with a Yamaha set- and I rather like their tom-mount system- which uses a rotating ball for adjustment purposes. You can get the toms exactly where you need them. Also, as far as the toms go, they are about an inch shallower then standard toms...which is great for me because I am 5'7- and I have great reach on them. My best advice, having been a drummer for merely 3 years now, is to NOT buy a set that comes with cymbals, sticks, throne, etc...Spend the money where it counts...the drums. Save and buy your other pieces seperately. In the past, I have played a Pearl Rhythym Traveler, which did it's job in the studio, but didn't have that full-size feel live. I have also played and owned a 70's era Rodgers Jazz Kit and have played countless other sets. All in all, this set is the best buy for the money- according to all reviews across the net and by my personal expereince. It is top notch quality and I would certainly continue to buy Yamaha's products for years to come.

I play this set at church. Maybe I need to try the new head route - I'm having a lot of trouble getting this set to sound the way I want it to. Toms have rings, buzzes and overtones I'm can't eliminate. Snare is weak. As much as Yamaha talks about hardware, I find this set's hardware flimsy. This truly is a "cheap" set. I much prefer my personal "inexpensive" Pearl Export equipment. Nothing personal, Yamaha, just disappointed in the quality of this product.

I bought this kit used and replaced the heads, kick and high hat. the older kit came with a 18 in kick that I tuned with a foam pad set up and it sounds great and the small size makes it easy to load and set up. Great quality hardware and 6ply shells sound great on the recordings we produced.
Great buy for the drummer on a budget. I have owned these for about six months now and they are great. Since I bought them from a local store they already came with good Remo heads. And nice Paiste cymbals. So no matter how good or bad you are buy these.
A friend of mine bought this a couple of years ago, and we use it once a week in clubs for jam nights. I've got to say, it's a great little kit! It comes with cheap heads, but that's easily and inexpensively remedied. The hardware is better than you'd expect, as are the tom mounts. I don't like using a drum key to adjust the floor tom legs though. The kick pedal is surprisingly quick, and the hihat stand pretty solid. The paint job is pretty, and it looks very nice under stage lights. IMO absolutely the best kit for the price.
Ok, the guitarist in my band built a studio at his house and he bought a rydeen for it. The bass drum is a piece of crap. I've tried different heads, pedals, head tension, and it simply does not have the capability to give a "booming" sound. The snare drum was exceptional for the price of the set, and the toms sound fantastic with the proper heads and tuning. I would recomend remo pin-stripe heads.
these are great.very easy to set up,they have a great sound after you replace the heads.they go great with any selection of music.they have big sound for such a small price.
I used this set because I didnt want to take my set to the house I was playing at and I must say.... This thing is horrendous... worst set I've ever played.... If you have a little bit more money then buy a Yamaha Stage Custom Nouveau. It is 100000x better. Buy some new heads, some Zildjian A Custom cymbals and you have a supurb sounding set. DONT BUY THE RYDEEN!
First off I have owned Yamaha all my life. They offer a great quality product with a great sound. The shells are made from mahogany, which can offer a variety of sounds when used with any head. I love my son's Rydeen. Sometimes I'll even practice on his instead of my own. It's really unfortunate, though, that they're discontinuing it. Buy them while there still in stock. You won't regret it!
I have owned this kit for two years and I am not impressed. It is okay for a beginner but if you have ever played a more advanced set you can tell a major difference. If I could go back in time I would have never bought this kit.
I bought this about a week ago and all I can say is WOW! My friens say it sounds like a set that is about $3000. The tone is awsome and the blue color is awsome to! Save your money and buy this set. It will make you play better and sound awsome! I only replaced the heads and made it sound more decent. Buy it!
I've had this set for two years now, and I have to say I love it. I do look into buying a new set, but for a beginner, and for where I am right now, this set is awesome! I play very hard, and all the heads are still holding up, except for the snare head, I replaced that almost the day I got it, not because it broke, I just didn't like the sound it was giving off. The kick drum is really loud, and annoys guitarists at times, I LIKE IT! The drums do go out of tune very easily though. But this is a great set for just messing around on, or playing bars or something. I don't recommend you go on tour with it though! ^^ Overall, the set is great, and for the price! I guarantee you'll like it!
