I went looking on the Audio-Technica site for this microphone and couldn't find it. A little research turned up the ATR1300. The M4000S is the same microphone repackage with an XLR to XLR cable. You are essentially paying for an upgraded cable.

The sensitivity of this mic is about 6 db below that of most similar models, so you will need to crank the gain a little. This is only a problem if you have less than pristine preamps or if the electrical environment is particularly dirty.

The mellow high end makes this an excellent mic for female vocals, especially for those with a bit of power. This also makes it a good mic for "bright" instruments like a banjo or fiddle. It's not that good at pulling detail out of most acoustic guitars, especially a 12 string that carries a lot of harmonics. For those you need a decent medium to large diaphram condenser mic (I like the MXL 990)
Run of the mill cardioid (unidirectional) dynamic with on/off switch.
All metal construction similar to the Shure SM58. Don't abuse it and it should last quite awhile.
Substantially cheaper than the SM58, but does not have the output level of the Shure mic. A bit more mid-range as well. This is likely due to the higher impendance.

Given the price and the branding, I would expect better performance specs out of this mic. It's only so-so for vocals and lacks the frequency response to be a good instrument mic. These are OK for starter mics if one is on a very tight budget, but I'd sooner pay more for a mic with better specs than use these.

It has done well at everything I have asked of it, including miking a dobro, and as a voice mic at church.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

I got these on a stupid deal of the day, and the only stupid thing is that I didn't stock up on more. It is better for upper register singing/instruments, as it seems to lack a bit of low-end punch. Throw a little reverb in the mix, and it's a lot less of an issue. I would probably go with a higher-end mic for recording, but they make a great jam/practice/emergency backup mic. If you are on a budget, this might be just the ticket for you.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

This is a great spare mic to have - especially when you need good mic for speaking with an on/off switch. It will also do in a pinch for backing vocals, but I would not recommend it for lead vocals. For speaking it is quite adequate.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

The first one that arrived didn't work. That's not entirely true. If you stuck it inside your mouth and screamed it made a little sound. But that's it. Otherwise it didn't work at all.

We were told that the mic wasn't functioning right. I had them replace the mic and the cable. They were sure that would solve the problem.

Second mic and cable - same thing. The thing is a complete hunk of junk and I can't believe I wasted all that time sending multiple items back and forth.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

There are many more expensive mics to be sure. Our band plays 30 to 40 times per year in bars and parties. We have found that the sound quality and durability from these reasonably priced mics is very good. Break or crush one and it is no big deal. Keep and extra on hand because things do happen.

Im the lead singer of a great Rock, Blues, and Country band. My band mate bought two of these M4000S for backup vocals. These mics need a lot of gain and volume behind them to even be heard. Granted the environment is a high octane one, still these mics are not made ( in my opinion) for the kind of band that must have volume and energy. I may donate them to a church.
