I use microphones from Audio Technica, Shure, Audix and others. They are like paint brushes. Some brushes are expensive, and some simply are not. Sometimes the brush you really should use is the inexpensive one. Just because another brush costs a lot more does not mean it's going to do what you need it to do in that particular stroke.

This microphone is a great example. One of the things I record a lot of are conferances and conventions. If I'm working in a room that isn't overly bright, (IE lots of high frequencies bouncing around the room), and the cabinets are well downstage and in front of the mic, I find these SP-5's do real well on a podium. They've got a good bit of gain, especialy for a dynamic, though they are prone to feedback if you really start pushing it. For speech, they are capable of producing a nice warm vocal while having good presence as not to sound muddy.

I don't find them to be all that great for vocalists that get right up on the windscreen though. Nor would I trust them in really high SPL environments as I'm certain I'd be trying to chase runaway squeel all night.

If you're using them for recording, they'll really shine there. They really are somewhat close to 58's aside from the fact that they are definately more susceptible to feedback when used for sound reinforcement. They're a real woorkhorse and have a very good response right on through from low to high.

Seriously, if you're really on a budget, pick a couple up and try them during practice or sound check. I think you'll be suprised at what you get for your money, and if you really are on a budget but are starting to gig, you'll probably buy a few more.

Backing vocals, toms, snare, guitar cabs, as long as the monitors aren't super loud onstage, these mics can do that stuff.

You'll get a whole lot more than you paid for even if you pay twice what I did. (Which I doubt you will. These mics have been very reasonable for years now.)

Let me be clear here, I didn't give them 5 stars because they're the same microphone you'll get when you spend 2,500 clams. I gave them 5 stars because they give you every penny of your money's worth and more. Like the title says, they're easily worth 5 times the asking price.

Only one word for this! CRAP. It sounds horrible. You can even hear the parts moving inside if you shake it. Straight out of the box it feels cheap and light. Do not get this. I replaced it with a Behringer mic and I'm very pleased with it. DO NOT BUY! WASTE OF MONEY!

used in a small benefit show with acoustic instruments & vocals. did not have any problems, except you have to stay close to the mic, the singers problem.

I bought this for work. I am a professional video operator. I do read-on's at the onset of my recordings, and for this task this microphone works great. It is clear, no on/off switch to break and it's durable. I would definitely recommend it for this sort of application.

Great mics for the price! Work better than the Shure SM48 and SM58 with my Peavey mixing board. Really HOT mic...will feedback quicker than the Shure mics. I did have to repaint both of the SP5 mics almost right away because the coating peeled- off. ( 2 coats of a hand-hammered spray paint works great ...been good for a couple of years now!)

I live in several worlds which include not only music, but also amateur radio. I originally purchased two Nady SP-5 Mics to go with a PA I purchased at the time, and they worked very well for that application, when I was pressed for an urgent need for a mic to be used with an HF Amateur Radio transceiver. It connected write up and not onlt performed flawlessly, it exceeded all expectations in terms of sound and signal quality! (Yes. Sound quality is a significant factor in amateur radio.) My SP-5 has been heard by amateur radio stations around the globe! I have and will continue to recommend this mic to my many friends in the amateur radio community.

Comments about Nady SP-5 Dynamic Cardioid Neodymium Mic:

I bought a pair of these for fun, mainly to experiment with cardioid mic placements. I have just finished a test recording with these and was throughly impressed! I either own or have used the best mics out there for vocals. I have a powerful voice and a 5 octave range. This mic handled various dynamics and all parts of my range extremely well. Exceptional quality for the price. I'm looking forward to trying these out on acoustic guitar recordings next. It's hard to say if this mic would work for everyone due to the differing tone qualities we may possess, as well as differing objectives for our recordings, but I would recommend giving these a go. If you know how to use SM58s (as a reference) and the equipment you work with correctly, and know what sound you are trying to achieve, then you should be able to get a lot out of this mic.

I have a bag of 6 of these, with cables that I have been using since I guess 2003 or 2004, for everything from the church band, to recording background tracks for video work. They are in and out of the bag, and tossed around my truck on and off on a frequent basis. After close to a decade of use, they still look and work like new aside from the foam covers which if I recall right I bought separately. Without the foam screens these mics are particularly sensitive to highs, pops etc.. Installing the screens gives me the nice, even natural voice tones I am looking for in all the situations I have applied them to. A friend with a DJ business liked them so much, he bought a few as well and uses the snot out of them for at least 6 gigs a week.
