OVERVIEW

For singers in loud bands.

The Sennheiser e 838 microphone from the evolution 800 Series has been engineered for the vocalist who needs the vocals to cut through the band. Due to its excellent acoustic properties, the e 838 mic delivers a high signal output to cut through high on-stage sound levels with ease. A gentle presence boost to even tonal response ensures vocal clarity and projection. The balanced frequency response maintains signal quality when moving on and off-axis during performance. The minimal proximity effect provides for consistently clear bass-end performance when singing closer to, or further from the microphone. The cardioid pick-up pattern provides excellent feedback rejection and good isolation from incidental rear noise. The rugged metal construction and internal damping isolates handling noise.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I have switched from Shure mics to Sennheiser e838. I can hear the difference and that's all I needed to make the switch. This is a great vocal microphone. Make the change, you won't be disappointed. Reasonably priced at Musicians Friend. Always great service.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I have used a pair of genuine (not fake) SM58s for the last 5 years at various live-music events including parties at home. I must say I was happy with the SM58s as they was very versatile for pretty much all type of vocalists. I also have a pair of Line6 XD-V75 wireless mics which are for the event' MCs and sometimes for vocal.

Several months ago, I was requested to have 6 mics set up for an indoor event. Consider such requirement is quite rare, I went a little cheap and bought 2 e838s (after reading some pretty good reviews on them) thinking they would be good enough for the price.

When I plugged in the e838s side-by-side with the SM58s, I found the e838s cutting through the mix much better, and sounding much clearer than the SM58s. After that event, I switched to the e838s as my main wired mics, while keeping the SM58s my spares.

There was recently another event that required a 6-mic setting, which I again got to compare the e838 and the SM58S while miking them. It was much easier to mike the e838s as all I needed to do was to decrease the Low frequency a couple of notches (I have a Presonus Live 16.0.2), while the SM58s required 1 notch down for Low, 2 notches up for Mid, and 1 notch up for High to keep up with the e838s.

I have since replaced the two SM58s with another pair of e838s for a total of 4 e838s. They are just good and so affordable without trade off in quality.

To summarize: the mic feels substantial and durable, the sound is clear and cut through easily, and the price is just right.

This mic has great clarity and seems to reject feedback. I used this mic for the first time last weekend at an outside show, I really like the clarity.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

Sometimes it is not easy finding the right mic for your particular voice. I fell into the trap of thinking I had to keep spending more $$ to sound better. In this particular case, I was WRONG. I sing lead in a cover trio from the drum kit. I needed a mic that would cut through the mix (we ALL do)and would give me a great mix of clarity combined with gain before feedback. I thought the Sennheiser e945 Supercardioid was going to be my ticket, but after a year of being told my conversations with the audiences were muddy, I finally jumped down-line to the e838 and could not be happier. Prior to the e945 I had used a few other Sennheisers after finding they sounded better on me than any Shure or EV I had used in the past. I got the e838 on sale and KNOW I sound better than I did with the e945 that was double the price. Break a leg!

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I have for many years used a Shure Beta 58 for live performances and thought I would try something different. I compared this mic side by side with a Beta and could not hear much of a difference. It has a nice response and cuts through the mix quite well. It can be a little bright, but I found it to be a nice sounding mic overall.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

This is the clearest sounding dynamic cardioid microphone that I've ever used. It is much better than my old Shure SM58, great for cutting through the mix. I sing baritone and tenor and play (mostly) electric guitar, and I've never been able to hear myself so well over what I'm playing, other than when I'm using a much more expensive tube mic (which is more for studio work than live performances). That isn't to say that the Sennheiser 838 is particularly hot (although it is considerably more responsive than the Shure), but rather, the tonal range of this mic doesn't step on what I'm doing instrumentally. In my experience, most microphones in this price range sound muddy... not so with this one. In fact, it's quite the opposite. For what it's worth, I have also been able to use the 838 in a small practice room without getting feedback. As someone who has been a semi-professional musician for nearly twenty years, I highly recommend this microphone.
