The metal wrist-rest isn't all that comfortable. And out of the box it sounded like a brick. But with a neck adjustment, head tightening, new strings, and proper bridge placement, it sounds and plays like some much more expensive 6-string banjos I've played. I needed this for a dixieland gig, since I know way more jazz chords on the guitar than I know on my 5-string banjo. But while I'm waiting for the dixieland music to arrive, I'm having a blast picking it with some of my more complex guitar picking patterns. (No, you can't pick it like a 5-string.)

If you don't play banjo at all, and especially if you can already fingerpick like crazy, this is a GREAT way to get banjo tonality into your sound. Just be prepared to do some guitar-tech work on it, since these don't exactly ship with the heads tightened up or the bridge properly aligned.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

Using drop-D tuning, it was easy to enhance Celtic, folk, and middle Eastern genres.
Projects over electric instruments, although I am adding a pickup to run through processors..

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

It sounded pretty good as soon as I tuned it up. Then I tightened the head some and put a .012 on the bass E and put a wound .022 on the A string-then WOW! I usually do a lot of bass runs on guitar using the fifth and sixth strings. Those runs are suprising on treble strings. It has been more fun than I have had in a while. And every guitar player that I have shown it to has been just giddy playing it. MF should offer a conversion string pack for the fifth and sixth string with LOOP ENDS. It was tricky getting the brass out of the loops. Still fun.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

July 2012 I started to look for a guitar or banjo. By Aug. I sent out a request to my family ( my wife and my 3 grown children).

I wanted a six string banjo for Christmas. That was the only item I wanted.

They all kept a secret. My wife kept asking me if wanted anything else. I said, NO. She mention to me what happens there is nothing under tree for you. So I made a small list.

Since Jan. 2013 I have been Practicing. I am 64 retired and watch my granddaughter. I have a lot of time to learn.

I know the basic cords and can pick.

Got this as a surprise from my wife and was very excited about it at first glance. Had difficulty with it staying in tune even with my tuner. Brought it to a friend who has exact one also and he said the same thing. He has trouble keeping is in tune also.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

The Banjo was purchased as a gift.

I was disappointed when I recieved the product.
When it arrived, it looked like the Banjo was sold to another person, returned and resold to myself. The box had been opened, the hardware was not in the shipping bag and was bouncing around in the box. Some of the screws that hold the drum to the banjo were not fastened and were also boucing around the box.
I called Musicians Friend the day I recieved the Banjo and spoke with Dale. He was very helpful.
Dale explained the 45 day return deal that your company offers. I have not decided If I want to return the Banjo or keep it. My daughters instructor is currently checking out the unit.
Needless to say, I am not satisfied with the condition I recieved the banjo. It should have been thoroughly inspected before being shipped.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

I have had this banjo a couple of days and am still figuring it out. It is a lot of fun to play but is seriously lacking in tone. I have a Deering Good Time 5 string that is wood and has no resonator that is more clear and louder then the Dean. I have spent some time trying to get the string action lower and went a little to far. I will fix that today. Setup was fairly easy and I got the intonation spot on. I found a lot of resources on line to help in the set up. I wish Dean would take the time to set up the thing before they ship it. I guess it would cost more if they did that. Go ahead and buy it. It's a hoot to play one.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 6 Banjo:

The more I play the BW6, the more I like it. I'm considering an eventual transition over to a regular 5-string banjo but for now I'm very happy with the BW6. This is the first Dean I've owned and I like it.
I was impressed when I pulled this instrument out of the box. The set-up was a snap and it's got a very nice look to it.
I'm a drummer who's never played a regular banjo but since I play a little bit of guitar and wanted to do a little bit of banjo, this seemed like a good choice. I've had a good time playing it so far and it appears to be a quality instrument (especially for the price).
For the price you can't beat this.
