OVERVIEW

The additonal string adds depth and sustain while making it easy to pick up for guitarists.

With a sparkling good-time sound and feel the Gretsch G9460 Dixie 6-String Banjo displays solid modern craftsmanship while authentically evoking the company's innovative banjo models of the early 20th century. Tuned like a regular guitar, it's a great crossover instrument for guitarists seeking that "Banjo" sound and also benefits from the 6th string with a deeper tone and longer sustain. It has a maple plywood rim and features a traditonal open-back "Claw-Hammer." The maple neck and fingerboard feature dot inlays for precise fingering. This Dixie 6-String Banjo is a splendid Southern surfeit of outstanding sound, performance and value for established artist, seasoned player and eager student alike.

Gretsch is proud to take players on a musical journey through nearly a century of great Gretsch history by introducing its Roots Collection of acoustic instruments. This exciting family of banjos, mandolins, resonator guitars, ukuleles and Rancher acoustic guitars feature classically authentic Gretsch designs that transport players to a bygone era well before the company made its acclaimed 1950s entry into the electric guitar world.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9460 Dixie 6-String Banjo:

I bought it blemished and saved forty. It ends up costing me fifty for a new bridge, the right strings and a stripped nut. I thank the Gretsch support team for helping. This is my first disappointment with musicians friend. I got the banjo working but it's not for more than fun.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9460 Dixie 6-String Banjo:

I guess the first thing to say is you can take this and make a really pleasing and meaningful instrument. Second is to say if you don't know much about stringed instruments and how different things effect tone, just leave it alone because out of the box it's a boat anchor not an instrument. The mistakes gretsch makes with these is 1. the strings 2. the tail piece 3. the combination of both resign you to only what you can get in loop strings that work on a six string. 4. nut and string spacing are ridiculous, you'll have to cut a new nut, it will be too narrow as that can't be changed, but you can widen the string spacing to make it playable it is not, for average hands anyway as it comes. Gretsch should have looked around and seen that all viable competing banjo guitars used 1.75 and wider necks, this is a real killer for the instrument but I kept it as I like the tones with a new terminator type 6 string tail piece that accepts ballend strings hence I could go much lighter, use electric guitar strings as they seem to sound more banjo and come readily in much lighter gauges and I had some.
The strings: Way too heavy to get any kind of banjo tone, sustain, folky resonance off the top. Get the lightest you can, the rest is secondary.
Also, the bass notes beyond the first position are thuds, dead notes. That won't change, good thing it's a banjo, as a guitar it would render it firewood.

All in all the gretsch Dixie is a well salvageable product failure. Most things were poorly planned and executed by Gretsch, but with a 15 buck terminator type tail piece, lighter strings and some nut adjustment you'll have a good sounding and entertaining banjitar. If you're buying it to play as is, don't. you'd be much better served to get a deering or something.

Would I recommend it to a friend, well all depends, if you read the above you should be able to decide if it's for you. I am a huge fan of the roots series, this one take a lot of mods and fixes

Comments about G9460 Dixie 6-String Banjo:

I absolutely love to play this "guitjo" and can hardly put it down. It is well made, has excellent banjo sound and was pretty easy to set up. I do a lot of finger style acoustic guitar and on many tunes, it translates well over to the 6 string banjo.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9460 Dixie 6-String Banjo:

I am a fairly inexperienced guitar player and wanted an instrument for that "Banjo" sound when playing live on a couple of songs my daughter plays. Not wanting to learn to play another instrument, these Banjitars sounds like a good option. I did a lot of reading and this Gretch seemed to fit the bill. It arrived setup for me, which meant that I could get into it straight away. But the sound with the stock strings are awful. Most people who post online will tell you to replace these strings, do it. Dont even bother playing it until you do. When you get new strings, get a light set 09-35. It improves everything. What I also did was not fit the low E, but fit another light gauge high E in place. I had a few spares from another string set lying about with a loop end and used them. You may have to experiement but by replacing that one string has made a masisve difference in tone. I can even strum the thing and it sounds quite acceptable. This should work with any 6 string out there too, But overall this Gretch is a great little instrument. No its not a "proper Banjo" but I dont have the time or the talent to learn all over again. Hope that helps

I wanted to learn how to play the 6 string banjo. Other than heavier than expected, I love the sound!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9460 Dixie 6-String Banjo:

The Gretsch Dixie 6 is a well made, affordable six-string guitar. I wouldn't use it every day, but it's great when you need to add a banjo sound to a track. It's really only a fingerpicker's instrument - strummers won't be happy with it and vice versa.

The Dixie 6 ships with the bridge un-set and fairly slack strings. You'll need to install the bridge in the correct location (hint: measure from the nut to the 12th fret, duplicate that measurement to the head and raise the bridge at that spot).

My only complaint is the no-knot tailpiece. Loop-end guitar strings are a little hard to find (they're available online - D'Addario makes 'em). I wish that Gretsch had come up with a decent ball-end tailpiece.

Bottom line: yes, I'd recommend the Dixie 6 to guitarists who want to add the occasional banjo sound to their gigs and tracks.
