Gretsch Guitars

Traditional mahogany design with modern construction and components perfect for blues.

The Gretsch G9200 Boxcar Resonator marks the return of resonators to the Gretsch family. It has the round neck that's preferable for blues-based music such as Mississippi Delta blues, country blues or even ragtime blues. A square neck version, which is used for bluegrass, is also available (please see model G9210, our sku# H80549). The G9200 features a beautiful mahogany body with traditional-style F holes. The heart of this richly resounding guitar is the Gretsch Ampli-Sonic resonator cone, hand-spun in Eastern Europe from nearly 99-percent pure aluminum for fantastic volume and sonic projection.

Gretsch is proud to take players on a musical journey through nearly a century of great Gretsch history by introducing its Roots Collection of acoustic instruments. This exciting family of banjos, mandolins, resonator guitars, ukuleles and Rancher acoustic guitars feature classically authentic Gretsch designs that transport players to a bygone era well before the company made its acclaimed 1950s entry into the electric guitar world.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9200 Boxcar Round Neck Resonator:

I was amazed at the quality offered for the price. Gretsch clearly does a good job of quality control at the factory that produces these. While not really an exceptional guitar the Boxcar represents a very good buy for the money. The guitar seems to be very well constructed of good materials, plays well and with a great tone. I've always wanted a resonator guitar, but could not quite make the numbers work.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9200 Boxcar Round Neck Resonator:

This thing sounds SWEEEEEET. I was so excited to open up the box when it finally was shipped (after being on backorder a few weeks) and was amazed and how carefully and well packaged it was. After tearing through a few layers of foam, cardboard, and packing material, I got her out and she gleamed from the start. It was even almost tuned already, just short adjustments is all it took before I was strumming away! It's clean and has a great warm tone, perfect for blues or western pickin' at any time. This resonator has a beautiful body that is very rustic. It doesn't come with electric pickups, but who needs 'em when you just want classic!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9200 Boxcar Round Neck Resonator:

I'm a beginner with the resonator guitar and playing slide. I got tired of practicing slide guitar on my Gibson acoustic, which wasn't set up for playing slide. When I first played this guitar I immediately noticed how much easier it was to get a clean sound with the slide (the action is higher than my Gibson). I feel like this guitar is great for beginning slide players and cheap enough to justify purchasing for that purpose alone.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9200 Boxcar Round Neck Resonator:

Bought one at the recommendation of a luthier friend. The quality was better than expected, though there is a strong aroma of glue. The item was listed as Condition 2, but looks in mint condition. Intonation at bit off at the 12th fret on the D and B strings, hopefully that can be corrected by my luthier.

Root Series G9200 Boxcar Round Neck Resonator is surprisingly warm sounding for a spider. Has that nice spider whine to it which seems to come from the depths of the entire instrument.

I particularly like the sound once you get above the 5th fret.

This guitar gives back a lot for what you put into it.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9200 Boxcar Round Neck Resonator:

I own 20+ guitars, all of which have been selected for playability and tone. I'm mainly a blues acoustic/semi hollow player. I've allways been a finger style picker, and like the other review said, this is not best for that. A pick wakes up the tone in this guitar. I've only had a bell brass resonator before so I was quite suprised to hear this one sound so warm and right. I've tried the Dobros and Regals, none of them quite fit like this. If you're used to regular guitars, this is a great transition guitar. It sounds good strumming and picking. Ofcourse the action is a bit high, but it's made for slide too, so don't judge it on that. All in all, first quality instrument I've seen out of China. Epiphone, you need to get some of the quality controle guys from the Gretsch factory over to yours.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9200 Boxcar Round Neck Resonator:

Best value I found. Can't stop looking at it. Heard some resonators that had better tone, but none at this price. Love the style & size. Action is lower than I thought, and it's not stocked with resonator strings, as the neck is built like a standard roundneck guitar and may be stressed by the heavier guage. This is great for adding spice to pickin' your folk, bluegrass, blues songs, but not so much for laying it down as a lap slide; it SOUNDS great when you do that, but the action doesn't give it any advantage over laying down a standard guitar. It DOES sound fantastic for playing standard slide & pick songs. My only sound complaint is that the resonator doesn't pick up well on soft plucking (I don't use a pick), so if you play gently it sounds like a regular guitar with a slight twang. Put some fire into it, though, and it'll ring out like it came alive. All in all, great value, versatile, comfortable & easy to play. Don't forget freakin gorgeous mahogany and slick vintage look.
