Gretsch Guitars

Traditional nickel-plated, brass body design with modern construction and components perfect for blues.

The Gretsch G9201 Honeydipper Metal Resonator marks the return of resonators to the Gretsch family. It has a round neck that's perfect for blues-based music such as Mississippi Delta blues, country blues or even ragtime blues. The G9201 features a nickel-plated brass body with traditional-style F holes. The heart of this richly resounding guitar is the Gretsch Ampli-Sonic resonator cone, hand-spun in Eastern Europe from nearly 99-percent pure aluminum for fantastic volume and sonic projection.

Gretsch is proud to take players on a musical journey through nearly a century of great Gretsch history by introducing its Roots Collection of acoustic instruments. This exciting family of banjos, mandolins, resonator guitars, ukuleles and Rancher acoustic guitars feature classically authentic Gretsch designs that transport players to a bygone era well before the company made its acclaimed 1950s entry into the electric guitar world.

I'm an avid bass player and always had a love of delta blues. After spending years tossing the idea around of getting a resonator I finally treated myself.
First off, the factory setup is nearly perfect which came as a huge relief as I've read it can be somewhat complex to properly set up a resonator. The sound is absolutely huge, almost to a detriment because it is hard to sing over the guitar when you are really digging in. The "v" profile on the back of the neck feels amazing and, as a bass player, the nice wide string spacing is a definite plus. It's just a hair more narrow then most classical guitar. Last, but not least, the sound is incredible for that great delta tone. I found it very frustrating trying to mimic the tone of Son House, Bukka White, and Charlie Patton on an accoustic but just 30 seconds in to playing "Down the dirt road blues" i had to laugh becuase i loved the swampy tone so much.

Wanted to like this guitar. It has the right look and weight (its heavy) but for me it lacked a real sense of presence. Its tone was either really loud or weak. Slide playing seemed to require more muscle than finesse and so it wasnt the right guitar for me. Pretty amazing build quality for the price though. The one feature I really wish it had is an adjustable bridge or saddle for the action was low for my tastes and adjustment was not easy. And so it went back...

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

While I have a nifty collection of guitars, this is my first resonator. I've never played a National or anything super expensive, so my opinion is based on comparisons to budget resonators. This thing looks and sounds really nice. I've been getting into blues in open tunings and having a real gas with this. Words can't describe it. Go to a store that has one and check it out. That's all I can knowledgeably say is that I love this. And what a great value using their 15% off discount.

Just received this guitar yesterday. As usual Musicians friend never disappoints me. Long time customer. This guitar is fantastic. I played it so much in the past 12 hours that my fingers need pain killers. I just love it. Built well. Stays in tune and sure looks pretty. Decided to display it with my other guitars. Very happy!!!!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

This gem of a guitar will have you packing up your suit-case, runnin' down to the station... and catchin' that ol' fastest mail train you see.

I absolutely love this resonator guitar and am flooded with compliments each time I pull it out. I play in open tunings (G, E, or D) and ocassionally in standard with a bottleneck or chrome slide. When performing with this baby at shows, jaws just hit the floor and it's as if you're taken back to a juke-joint in the 1930's Mississippi Delta.

This resonator is not for your average guitar picker but for your true down to the roots bluesmen.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

The attention to quality and detail really amazed me. Was going to save for another National, but got a Honey dipper and an alligator instead. Any sound difference or quality difference doesn't justify the price difference to me. I've owned 4 Nationals and presently own 3. Kinda wish Gretsch would introduce a square-neck biscuit cone. Also noticed one reviewer compared these with a tri-cone. Kind of like apples and oranges. Tri-cones are not better or worse, just different.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

Still pretty new, but so far I like the construction, feel, and playability of the Gretsch steel box. Particularly, I like the old-time blues sound you get with it. Some folks say it's too "tinny" for their taste, but it sounds just right to my ear. Sounds like the boxes used on the vintage blues records by innumerable artists. Sounds good straight and takes the slide beautifully -both glass and metal.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

I've played resonator guitars and know to look for one that rings -- after all, they are constructed from bell brass with the nickel plating! This one did not have much sustain or ring. It looked great, was solidly built -- but maybe I got a dud. Anyway, found a Republic tri-cone that meets my requirements -- so this Gretsch was returned.
