OVERVIEW

The Kentucky KM-150 mandolin is a fabulous value available in an all-solid, traditionally designed, A-style instrument that beautifully combines period-correct vintage specifications with an amazingly affordable price. When it comes to tone and playability, the KM-150 also excels. To achieve the best tone and volume possible, select solid spruce - meticulously hand-carved and graduated - is used for the top, while select solid maple is used for the back and sides. A solid maple neck with rosewood fingerboard and traditional snakehead-shaped peghead is attached to the body by a modified dovetail neck-body joint not only adds to the authentic look, but also has a comfortable shape that is easy to play, and offers a lifetime of serviceability. Top everything off with a set of accurate, open-geared tuners, an adjustable rosewood bridge and tuning will be easy, accurate and with perfect intonation every time.

An all-solid value from Kentucky ” America's favorite mandolin.

I play in a bluegrass band and was looking a Mando to bring to festivals. I am blown away by the quality for the price. Neck as straight as an arrow, real sweet sound...it blows away all of the eastmans I have owned which were triple the price. I have owned about 20 mandos over the years. This is my favorite one after my Collings. It took me a few hours to get action how I like it, low but with a punch.

I play a high end Collings in my band but I can't wait to try this one onstage. I

I am not by any means a serious mandolin player. My parents got me this as a gift on a lark as my dad was listening to a lot of bluegrass at the time. That said, for the price it is a very solidly constructed intstrument (having survived the original shipping, shipping to Japan, and at least two trips packed in a suitcase on an international flight with naught but my underwear to protect it fromt he ravages of baggage handlers) and excellent bang for the buck. The tuners hold a pitch very well, the finish is applied fairly evenly, and the fretwork is acceptable provided that the floating bridge is set up correctly. There are some rough spots on the finish in the shadowy recesses of where the neck meets the body, but that is largely cosmetic. All in all, I would say it is a solid instrument, easy to learn on, and great for the price.

Comments about Kentucky KM-150 Standard A-Model All-Solid Mandolin:

I got this as a gift for my sister who has been playing the mandolin for years and using a very old, not very nice instrument. She swooned at this - she loved it. The tone was round and warm, and she said that the neck was very comfortable. She has played it constantly since she received it and continues to rave about it. Very good deal at the price!

Comments about Kentucky KM-150 Standard A-Model All-Solid Mandolin:

Bought this to replace a cheap "plywood" mandolin, so I have some limited experience with the instrument (though more with guitar). When I opened the package, I was surprised to discover that it was not set up. The bridge was packed separately, although the strings were loosely installed. Fortunately, I know enough of music theory and mathematics, and as a hobby woodworker I had appropriate tools, so that I was able to figure out how to do the set-up, despite there being no instruction with the instrument. All in all, though, it was an hour and a half well spent, because the mandolin has lovely tone. "Riings like a bell!" (Note that the "bottom line" only offers "yes" or "no" options for recommending this to a friend, and I'd say yes with reservations: I'd recommend it to a friend who would be capable and comfortable with the set-up process, or who would be willing to pay to have it done at a shop.)

Comments about Kentucky KM-150 Standard A-Model All-Solid Mandolin:

Being a bass & guitar player, I wanted to give mandolin a try after jamming with some friends back home. I ended up choosing the KM-150 after reading a lot of reviews on several mandolin forums. For the price, the KM-150 seemed a solid choice. Anything more and I figured I probably wouldn't appreciate it until gaining more experience.

The minor defect on the fretboard is from the grain of the wood and how it grew, not craftmenship....and it's a mandolin after all...it needs some character!

I did have to check out a youtube video to get the floating bridge right, but it took like 2 min to watch video and 2 min to get it tuned right. Easy...Don't let setup prevent you from trying this great instrument.

Comments about Kentucky KM-150 Standard A-Model All-Solid Mandolin:

Beautifully made mandolin. It really is gorgeous. It needed a bit of work to set up, but I'm told that it is normal when buying a new mando. Strings still buzz when fingers are pressed on the fifth fret, so I'm still tweaking it. Since I'm new to the mando, I'm taking my time on this. End pin fell out after a couple of days, but I glued it back in. One of the E strings broke when doing the first tuning, but I had bought extra strings before getting the mando, so I was happy to find out that replacing the string was very simple. This mando has a beautiful sound to it, and I am loving learning to play my new mandolin.

Comments about Kentucky KM-150 Standard A-Model All-Solid Mandolin:

Wow, what a surprise. I knew this mandolin was made in China before I got it but had no idea they could really do it right. This has solid wood all around. Unheard of for a sub-two-hundred-bills mandolin or guitar (I used a coupon code!). And the build quality is as good as you could possibly expect. The action right out of the box is so low I would never need to lower it. The tone is loud and crisp and clear. I had an old mandolin that I liked but I had no idea what an upgrade this would be. The beauty of solid wood is that over time, the tone gets better and better. Most inexpensive guitars don't age well due to the glues in the laminate. This puppy will only get better. I love this mandolin and have only 1 thing to say - GET ONE!

I was expecting the mandolin to arrive set up.
My repair man told me it is best to ship it witout the bridege in place. So I placed the bridge myself by starting at the the points on the F holes and then fine tunning it by playing the octave above until it was in tune. I was not sure If I placed the bridge backwards. He said it works either direction and I did it right.

I was looking for an F- style Kentucky but everything under 1000.oo seemed to lack tone . I stumbled upon the KM 150 A- style almost by accident, played it for about a half hour and realized the tone was far better than the F styles I'd been looking at . AND aT a fraction of the price . The newer KM -150s are nothing short of amazing for the price. And they record beautifully .
