OVERVIEW

Kentucky carved tops deliver the knockout punch.

The KM-160 Kentucky Mandolin has the cutting power required for solo and ensemble work. The basis design elements of this series have continuously evolved and improved over Kentucky's 30-year history. The body shape has been refined for maximum percussive effect. Your chop might just shatter not only your own windows but possibly your neighbors as well!

The slim, fast neck is constructed of a single piece of maple and is reinforced with an adjustable truss rod. The neck is attached to the body with a complex dovetail joint for maximum security and sound transmission. The bridge is adjustable for easy adjustment of string action. Tuning is quick and precise with the M120, 14:1 ratio Gotoh tuners. The snakehead peghead shape is overlaid with Indian rosewood and inlaid with pearl and abalone in the unique Arrowhead design.

I searched hi and low for just the right buy this year. This is my first mandolin, but have done my home work. Out of the box it was beaut!Once tuned, I never could have imagined the explosive sound and viberance this instrument displayed. Once the bridge was set in place, no further adjustments were needed. Some may want to lower the preset height on the bridge to get lower E and G strings, but I've left mine alone for now. I am VERY pleased with workmanship. All my fellow musicians that have touched and played it cannot beleive the deal I got. This baby gets easier and sweeter everytime I use it. Just one warning..it is loud! For a starter mandolin, this is the one. I may never feel the need to upgrade as I assumed I eventually would. If I do, this one has earned a spot in my musical collection forever!

Comments about Kentucky KM-160 Series Standard A-model Mandolin:

I read some bad reviews on this instrument but I can't see anything that remotely fits the bad reviews I've seen. I fitted the bridge and tuned it up my self. It plays beautifully. Once I got it fine tuned it never really lost its tuning. This instrument is great for beginners as well as skilled players. Highly recommended.

    Can't go wrong

Comments about Kentucky KM-160 Series Standard A-model Mandolin:

I had tried a friends Mandolin and after a few weeks decided to get my own. The finish is excellent and although it didn't come setup, it was pretty easy to get the intonation spot-on. The original strings didn't sound all that great, but a new set of Elixir lite nanoweb strings got it singing. The tone has improved over time also due to the wood curing. This is definately a keeper.

Comments about Kentucky KM-160 Series Standard A-model Mandolin:

Great look, great tone, easy set up. Beautiful instrument, clean lines, no dings or glue marks or blemishes. Easy to set up, easy to adjust action. Nice loud consistent tone with lows and highs. Loud enough to be heard together with two guitars and a keyboard. My daughter and her husband like it too. It gets passed around the room during our sessions, we all take turns. Everyone wants to play it. Good job Kentucky.

Comments about Kentucky KM-160 Series Standard A-model Mandolin:

After checking out others reviews of this model Kentucky mandolin, I purchased it from Musicians freinds. It sounds wonderful, but you have to set it up, this should be something everyone learns to do. After setting it up, and intonation was on spot, I was quite happy with sound and action. Very Nice sound and will enjoy this for many years. There was some finish blemishes on the back, but you really don't look at the back...

Comments about Kentucky KM-160 Series Standard A-model Mandolin:

This has all the right ingredients - carved solid wood, nitro finish, Klusons, bone nut etc. It comes COMPLETELY not set up... Bridge arrives in separate bag, etc. Tailpiece cover pops off the minute you install bridge because it's angled too low (on mine).

              So - there's learning curve.

Having said ALL that, if you can file and dress the nut, set the intonation, remove the tailpiece and reangle, bend the sides of the tailpiece to hold cover better and then replace the end pin (because it WILL crack when you remove the tailpiece unless your way better than I am) and replace the strings, you have a pretty great sounding mandolin.

Klusons hold tune - it's no toy - truss rod works as it should.

Finish is decent, tho there is a spot or two (once strings to tension, peg head cover pulled up and hairline crack appeared in black nitro). If it get's worse I will hit it with some instrument lacquer spray - a couple of hits of clear and that hairline will vanish when polished.

It's a real bone nut, when you file the slots to about 20-30 1/1000ths above the first fret (lower if you dare) and hit it with some file, 600 and then 1500 sand paper, it WILL polish up to a gleaming shine. I always dress bone nuts with Brilianize.... Use a feeler gauge if you have one - I used 36 at the top and 40 at the bottom and I was just fine.

Anyhow, it took the better part of an afternoon and there are retailers who will do most of this for you for a little more... but where's the fun in that? Order with an extra end pin and an extra couple of sets of light strings (trust me)....

Comments about Kentucky KM-160 Series Standard A-model Mandolin:

Needs D'addario strings and a proper setup. But it sounds fantastic. Maybe not a top tier mandolin, which cost thousands, but arguably the best A style mandolin for the money. Beautiful and amazing sound.
