I've been a guitar player for 30+ years and have been doing my own setups for a long time. I bought this little uke for my daughter (and for me to fool around with). It's got a surprisingly good tone and has solid construction. I think it is totally worth the price. BUT IT DEFINITELY REQUIRES SOME SETTING UP! As soon as I opened the box and picked it up I knew that both the nut slots AND saddle needed to be filed a LOT. But after doing so it plays nicely and intonates fairly well up the neck. It also holds tuning pretty well (but keep in mind that nylon strings take a LOOOONG time to stretch out -- count on a good week before it settles down.)

If you can do the set-up yourself then it's a no-brainer; get it. If you can't then you'll probably find that the repair bill that a technician will charge you is nearly equal to the price of this little uke. But it's worth it. In fact, this might be an ideal piece on which to learn how to do some simple maintenance jobs.

I bought this uke, thinking if I pay double/triple the price of the bottom-end ukes it would be ok. I was wrong. The intonation was so off, that the uke was painfully out of tune with itself when using the 5th fret. I recommend either buying a cheaper uke for show, or spending more and getting a uke you can actually play.

Great ukulele for the price

By Leroy

from Vancouver, WA.

Comments about Lanikai LU-21 Standard Ukulele:

I've been playing the ukulele for years. I have two Martin ukuleles and 2 Kamaka ukuleles. I just purchased this LU21 and I love it. I think it is great for the person that wants to learn how to play the guitar. It has a great tone and if you set it up right you will have years of pleasure. It has such a mellow tone and is so relaxing to play..You won't go wrong with this one.

Comments about Lanikai LU-21 Standard Ukulele:

I read all the comments before I bought this uke. I believe its a good beginner uke good quality; good price; fast service. However, I had to buy a tuner because it needs tuning almost every day. As soon as I get the hang of playing I plan on buying a better uke probably a concert one. This one serves my current needs; good quality at an affordable price for a beginner but get a tuner.

            Lanikai 21

You just can't neat that velvet , harp like sound of the Laniaki
I too am one of those guy's who have played guiutar all my life. I saw a guy playing one on t.v.
and thought that it might be a cool instrument to play. Small, great sound coming from that little
fellow, so I began to research all I could about it. It became evident after talking to a shop owner
on the internet, that the Lanikai 21 was the best sound, most practical, and It won't break you
ukelele out there. So at his advise I bought one. Well here I am just recently purchased a new
classical guitar that I genuinely adore, but my wife ask me the other day why I play the ukelele
more? I thought it over and I think it is evident; It's now my favorite past time. So if youré in the
market for a ukelele, the Lanikai 21 is the one to buy, without regret......................................
Not a better ukelele out there for the beginner or the pro
I got a great deal cost wise. Compared to other uke's out there it's #1

It didn't work for me too good.

Comments about Lanikai LU-21 Standard Ukulele:

We played the LU-21 for a few days and found that the strings kept popping out of the slots at the top (nut). It was very annoying. And it wouldn't keep tune even for a single song. Perhaps I just got a bad one, but id didn't work for me at all.
It looked nice, but just didn't function right.

Our friend lent us a cheap Filo Ukulele that was like $35 and it kept better tune.... the Lu-21 is much more but didn't preform as well.

            A Fine Little Instrument

            By Eric Lambex

            from Reno NV

Comments about Lanikai LU-21 Standard Ukulele:

A nice little instrument. Plays well, Clean soft tone. No intonation problems, Hold a tune well. Nice looking, nothing too fancy. I read some reviews that were quite negative. I bought mine at a Guitar Center--the bricks and mortar side of Musician's Friend. I think it is nice to try out a couple to make sure it plays well. If you do have intonation problems, or fret buzz, tell Musician's friend and the will like make it right. These are built to a price and there might be variations in quality.

I also noted some reviews of these ukes saying that they don't hold a tune well. If you have that problem just tighten the phillips screw in the middle of the gear on the back of the tuning peg.

            Ukes are easy and fun.

            Perfect for my first ukulele

            By Shay Park

            from Undisclosed

Comments about Lanikai LU-21 Standard Ukulele:

I only recently picked up the ukulele after playing guitar for several years. I did research on what would be a good start, and every site brought me back to the LU-21. I found that this is a perfect instrument for beginners who have a serious interest in ukulele, but don't want to spend too much on their first one. It has a nice sound and comes with good strings.

A couple of downsides is that it goes out of tune really easily, though that improves over time, and also it's top-heavy, making it a little hard to play standing up without a strap, because the neck tends to droop down and take the body with it.

I would highly recommend this for anyone just starting the ukulele!

You get what you pay for...

Comments about Lanikai LU-21 Standard Ukulele:

This is a cheap ukulele that's one step above a plastic toy from the gas station. It's really not a real instrument, but something to have a laugh with.

If you want a real ukulele, buy a more expensive one. I kind of wish I had just coughed up another $50 to $100 and bought a real instrument. This thing will be garage sale fodder or something for the kids to play with.
It's a ukulele, not a lot of features here to discuss.
This is a notch above a plastic toy.

For the price, I wasn't expecting great quality, but this ukulele can't even really be tuned. (either the bridge is incorrect or the intonation on the neck is incorrect)

Still, you can make slightly out of tune music with this ukulele. If you'd like to play music that's actually in tune, buy a more expensive ukulele. Don't frustrate yourself with trying to get this thing to sound perfect. It simply won't.
You get what you pay for. Low quality at a cheap price.
