Harness the power and mystery of the turtle with this Hawaiian-tattoo-inspired design.

This Tattoo Concert Uke takes its design from traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation. The designs were monochromatic, tattooed in black against brown skin. The patterns and layout were strongly geometric and there were many shapes and symbols representing the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, and birds. This design is based on a Hawaiian turtle (honu), a symbol of longevity and endurance rendered in a Polynesian tattoo style. The fret markers are stylized sharks teeth.

As I said, I've been able to compare this uke side by side with another concert uke of comparable price and materials, and this one is clearly superior and a better buy. The cleaner fretwork, the slightly larger body and the better tone all surprised me; I really didn't think I'd be happy with a laminated wood instrument. (I spent a few minutes in one store playing an all solid wood koa uke, and this one is not far behind that one in tone.) This is an excellent instrument to start on, and you might decide you'll never need to move up the food chain (although gas strikes all of us musicians sooner or later!).
I'm rating this based on price and on comparison side by side with another uke of similar price, a Kohala KP-C model. I received that model for my birthday (picked out by my wife and daughter), and my daughter decided she wanted one too, so we went back adn she picked this one out for herself. Good choice!

The features on this are minimal, the most noticeable being the tattoo design on the top, which looks much better in person than it does in the photos I've seen. The woods look nice (all laminates) with even coloring, and the fingerboard and bridge also both look good. No body binding, which the Kohala has, but it doesn't take away from the design; I actually like it's minimal design (beyond the "tattoo"). There are no side dots on the neck, but the fret markers on the fingerboard are large and easy to see. And since I'm a lefty player, not having the dots on the "wrong" side of the neck is a plus!
This low end uke is very well made from good materials, even though there are no solid woods in the body (top sides back). I don't see any glue residue inside the body, and all the seams and linings are tight with no gaps. The fretwork is very good - no sharp edges - much better than the Kohala, which is rough on the fingers! Plays nicely, stays in tune well, even though it's new. Tunes up easily with a Snark tuner, btw.
Having played this Luna side by side with the Kohala, I can say that it has a much richer, more pleasing tone! Part of that is no doubt the better strings, but the Luna also has a slighty larger body (about 3/8" wider on the lower bout and 1/8" thicker sides). My daughter is very happy with this uke, and I'm planning on taking my Kohala back and exchanging it for one of these (I have my wife's permission!).

To be clear, this is not a review on the instrument itself. That is because even though I ordered it over 5 weeks ago, I still have not received it. When I ordered it on Jan 15, the website said that it was on backorder, but that the ship date would be Jan 25. I decided it was worth the wait and ordered it. Then on Feb 5, after reaching out to customer service, I was told that the new ship date was Feb 15. Now I have gone back to the website and the current ship date is March 11. This is getting ridiculous. At this point I have no faith that the instrument will ever come. Anyway, the only point of this review is a warning to anyone considering ordering this instrument that if it's on backorder, do not trust the estimated ship date. At all.

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I ordered this item three weeks ago(before the New Year). It was said this item would be sent on January 18th. Even though they didn't send my ukulele, i was already charged by the company. After three weeks, they haven't sent it yet. I emailed them to ask the situation of my item. The customer service emailed me I need to wait( two more weeks) until February 1st. Besides the fact that the shippment last londer than they had promissed, I think they should have informed me about the estimated shipment change. If I new this happened, I wouldn't order from this company. Sorry, I don't think it is professional attitude but dissapointment.

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I've played guitar for over two years and I wanted something else to expound my musical abilities with. Boy did I make a nice choice! I looked at Ukes for about 6 months before I came to this one. I wanted something that looked nice but did not cost an arm and a leg. This one fit the bill perfectly.
If you buy this just for the design than you may be disappointed. The laser etched design is not nearly as dark as portrayed in the pictures. Personally I enjoy the subtlety of the design..
The uke holds its tune very well even with the original strings. The strings are good quality and are much better than what I was expecting.
The wood looks really nice and overall has very good craftsmanship written all over it. The neck is well connected and has has no observable issues.
It comes with a gig bag which is nice but does not really offer any real protection.
My only problem with the uke es that the wood where the bridge is connected seems to be rather thin and weak. Not to the point of breaking and damage but that it just bows a little. Nothing serious but being me, I noticed it. Another thing that I noticed is that the strings are a little far away from the neck going up the neck, not excessively and does not really affect playing but just an observation.
Overall a great ukulele with great sounds and looks for a great choice for any musician.

I was surprised when my grandson said he wanted a ukulele. This would be his first musical instrument and after reading the reviews I purchased one as a gift for Christmas. The sound quality is very good and easy to play.

I have the electric version of this uke. I liked it so much that I bought this acoustic for my sister. It plays very well and also comes with some very good quality strings. Better than most strings that would come with a uke. Also has a beautiful design.

This little (concert size) ukelele is well constructed of good tone woods. Not real fancy but the laser-etched tattoo work is subtly attractive. It ships setup well and strung properly. It plays well and has a clear and rich tonality. And it comes with a decent gig bag. The only thing I would have done differently on this instrument is to give it better tuning machines. Fun to play!
