OVERVIEW

Luna's Weissenborn-style select acoustic lap steel features the same distinctive abalone fret markers as their High Tide Series ukuleles. A full moon at the first fret tugs at the waves that grace the rosewood fingerboards.

Acoustic lap-style guitars first emerged in Hawaii in the 1890s, where players raised the action of their standard guitars, laid them flat on their laps, and learned to play melodies with a metal bar sliding along the strings. Los Angeles-based luthier Hermann Weissenborn refined the concept in the 1920s. Electric lap steels were developed in response for the desire for louder volume.

Special-shaped lap steel with rising tide fret markers for a true Hawaiian Island look and feel.

Comments about Luna Guitars Weissenborn Lap Steel:

The fit and dinish are poor. Glue on the fret board and finish lacking in places around the sound hole. The product description says mahogany, but it is not. It's plywood with mahogany veneer. It was inexpensive and sounds good (but soft voiced) so i'll keep it.

Comments about Luna Guitars Weissenborn Lap Steel:

Really Nice looking instrument for the money. Had my eye on this for awhile thought I better get it. Will need to swap strings out as indicated by other reviewers, too light and rusted. Came with a small chip on neck along the binding, can feel it when hand rolls over. Looks like the laminate chipped off. Other than that it looks good and will sound good once I put new strings on. Good for me since I'm a beginner.

Comments about Luna Guitars Weissenborn Lap Steel:

I'm a bass player. so my opinions are not that of an expert... I certainly don't claim to be especially knowledgeable on Weissenborn style guitars.

Given the price point of this "Luna Weissenborn", it's a pretty good deal, especially if it's your 1st guitar of this type. For me, that is the case. The build quality seems pretty good, but not perfect. For this price, you have to be just a little forgiving. Overall, the finish was nice with only 2 minute flaws in areas that would usually go unnoticed.
The only detail, I was just a little disappointed in, was the detail and finish of the wood bridge itself. It was not well sanded and had a little finish spattered on it. This, I can easily spruce up at my 1st string change. I am waiting on John Pearse 3160L (open D) but I really wanted Newtone Aloha (they were back-ordered most everywhere). Don't let people tell you it's OK to use regular acoustic guitar strings. The string tension can potentially do much damage...
Guitar manufactures seldom give you measurements, of their instruments, to better gauge the size. To that end, here are a few measurement/ spec.s from mine. All measurements are approx. based on my tools.

          lower bout: 15.75"
          upper bout: 10.5"
          approx. "body length": 21.5"
          overall length: 37.875"
          depth at lower bout: 3.0"
          scale: 24.7"
          nut width: 1.935"
          sound-hole dia.: 3.74"
          string-spread at bridge: 2.4"
          string-spread at nut: 1.5"
depth at point where "neck" begins: 2.25"

Overall/Initially, I am quite pleased with this guitar and the price paid. It has a nice tone, which I'm sure will improve with a string change. Luna is just now coming out with a hard case # LSW but none are available just yet.

attractive guitar, but needed some work. would not stay in tune untill I tightend the nuts on the tuning pegs. Rings like a bell after I put the John Pierce strings on it.

Comments about Luna Guitars Weissenborn Lap Steel:

This guitar arrived in perfect shape, with no dings, blemishes or other flaws, and it sounds at least as good as it looks. After tuning up, I was extremely pleased with the guitar's voice -- full-bodied, sweet and strong without being brash. I have been playing guitar for over 40 years, and have had some great ones and some real clunkers I couldn't wait to get rid of. I can honestly find nothing to dislike about this Luna instrument (although I do wish it were made in the USA). I would have to say that for the price, this is probably the best value I have ever gotten on a new instrument and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great entry-level Weissenborn style lap steel guitar. This one is a keeper!

Comments about Luna Guitars Weissenborn Lap Steel:

Finally a good quality Weissenborn guitar at an affordable price. Solid mahogany gives that mellow tone most look for in a hollow-neck Weissenborn. Clean construction, attractive inlays and nicely matched woods add to the overall value of this guitar. Asian-made but high quality makes this a best buy for those looking to try their hand at acoustic lap steel guitar. My only complaint, after questioning Luna's customer service is that is comes standard with light strings. Being that Weissenborns are typically tuned to lower open tunings, it should come fitted with a heavier gauge, Mediums at a minimum. Specialized Weissenborn strings, i.e. John Pearse would be preferable. Will bereplacing the strings as soon as they arrive from Elderly.
