Comments about Recording King RG-31 Lap Steel Guitar:
First the bad: Upon pulling it out of the box, the input jack nut was not screwed in. Problem solved with a pair of pliers in about 10 seconds.
Ran my hand across the RK emblem on the head, and it fell off. (ehhh...so what?) One minor ding in the body. One of the strings had a bend in it (at least they shipped it with the strings loose so as to not bow the neck). the fret board is slightly off as far as being on the neck completely straight.
Now the good and my take on it: When buying a lap steel you are basically buying a slab of wood with some tuners and electronics in it. I dont understand people spending more than 200 bones on one, unless you are getting a double neck or something. I have 20+ years playing experience on guitar and pedal steel. This lap steel works for me and will for anyone else who knows what they are doing. I immediately replaced the strings. E A D, I replaced with flatwounds (.50 .40 .30) G B E, I replaced with heavy strings (.22 .17 .13) Mine stays in tune (stretch your strings out when putting them on kids. Saves you from complaining about it going out of tune) I use a DGDGBD tuning.
The pickup isnt bad at all. I play it straight into a deville if I want a little dirty, and it sounds great through my pedal steel amp as well.
Bottom line, it does what its supposed to do. For the low price of this thing, you can afford to buy better electronics and tuners if they dont work for your liking. I play out with it every weekend and its never failed me. Much better than going out and spending 4 times as much on one simply because of the logo on it.

Comments about Recording King RG-31 Lap Steel Guitar:
I got this at a local music store so i got to try it first and it totally rocks - played through a Fender Princeton with an overdrive pedal - very cool blues and rock machine! I recommend using a "heavy" solid steel bar (like the kind Pedal Steel or Dobro players use). If you use a glass tube or metal tube like blues slide players use you won't get that hefty pressing down on the strings. The strings are plenty far off the finger board so there's plenty of room to press hard and get good contact. Use the right kind of bar, steel finger picks and press hard enough and use the right lap steel technique and dig in and you will see that this baby monster roars and wines like a dragon!
Comments about Recording King RG-31 Lap Steel Guitar:
The makers of the RG-31 Lap Steel Guitar could really have a nice product here, but as several have already stated, the electronics on mine were not working at all. Dead. The finsh looked as though someone touched it while stain was still wet. All that said, I sent it back and ordered another. hopefully the finish will not be messed up and if the electronics are, I will look into have it repaired, because there is something special about this thing. The pearloid fret board, the shapely Mahogany body are all winners. Looks good can't wait to try it out
Comments about Recording King RG-31 Lap Steel Guitar:
i'm a newcomer at lap steel; and i bought this number because of it's looks. when it arrived, i was blown away. the mahogany body alone was worth the price; and i've enjoyed the hell out of playing it, even if i have to constantly tweak the tuning. ass-kickin' fun, and well-worth the price for a beginner.
Comments about Recording King RG-31 Lap Steel Guitar:
I had the same problem that the previous reviewer had- DOA. I undid screws all over and found the problem- an unsoldered wire in the jack. I fixed it. Another problem- A buzzing 4th string. Solution- Some filing on the nut to lower strings to the same level so the 4th sting wouldn't buzz against the steel. I also found the corner of the bridge irritating against my right palm. Fortunately, I had the bridge cover from another lap stell which I installed here. Result- a really nice instrument, especially for the price. Of course, not the greatest pickup, but the whole guitar cost less than some deluxe pickups. I do like it now, very much. But why should I have to do so much work on it to make it usable? So if you want a nice lap steel for a very good price, go ahead and try this one, but go into it with your eyes wide open. Musician's friend, perhaps you might use your clout to improve design and setup without affecting price. Anyway, I am happy now. The fretboard is pretty nice with its MOTS finish, and the wood is lovely with its satin finish. Make sure it is wired correctly and that the nut is properly set up and see if you can pick up an old bridge cover on ebay, and you will be happy too.
Comments about Recording King RG-31 Lap Steel Guitar:
After waiting seven days for this instrument, and having been very pleased with the Recording King banjo I'd received from another online retailer-since MF is still out of stock on that item- I was excited about the impending arrival. After retrieving the instrument from where the UPS driver left it in the 100 degree sun without calling me (I was home) to pick it up (or even honking), I unpacked the hot box, tuned up the steel, plugged it in and...NOTHING!! Turned out to be a loose/unsoldered wire. BOO!! I shall be slow, if ever, to order again.
