OVERVIEW

Redesigned for professional quality and tone.

At the top of the line of the Regal Studio Series Resophonic Guitars, the RD-40 Resonator has been redesigned from the inside out making it one of the best values when it comes to truly vintage-inspired, professional featured, resophonic instruments. Using Regal's many years of experience in the development and construction of traditional American acoustic instruments, they discovered ways to improve upon the most legendary designs from the past without pricing them out of the reach of any level player. Only the finest materials are used to create these new designs that reminisce of the past, while still meeting the demands of today's modern players. The new body shape takes its cues from instruments of the past; while the real secret to the tone of these instruments lies within. It all starts with a combination of Regal exclusives, such as the Power Reflex Tone Chamber for added volume, the DP-126 die-cast spider for its bell-like response, and a US-made, hand-spun aluminum cone. All together work in perfect harmony to assure the maximum, most articulate tone that can be heard in any playing situation.

Amazing workmanship for this price. I really like the 14 frets to the body. I also have a Gretsch Root series Boxcar, which has a short scale. The full scale of this one makes a comfortable transition from standard guitars. It has very impressive tone, with harmonics and overtones to spare. It is very responsive, and the harmonic overtones make it very intuitive..... it makes you feel you are channeling Leadbelly with Cooder weaving in and out of the sound. The only improvement they could make to this instrument would be a Fishman pickup like the Gretsch offers. It has great tone and is quite easy to record without being too quiet on very subtle notes. Very well suited to both fingerpicking and slide. If you want a long scale resonator, this is well worth serious consideration. My friend bought a national for over 4 times the price. They are exactly alike.... makes me think Regal supplies National with this one. So for the money... the Regal wins hands down. You will not be disappointed with this one.

This is a good looking guitar that has potential, but mine was in poor shape internally. When I first got it I thought it was a bit quiet and flat compare to what I expected. Very shortly thereafter it essentially became unplayable due to the compressed tone and string hitting the coverplate. I had planned to take it in for a setup anyway and was going to replace the maple saddle with a nicer ebony topped version. The experienced guitar tech who worked on it said it was one of the most mismanufactured resonators he had seen. The cone was bent, it was too large, and the shelf where it rested was an absolute mess. He mentioned the spider was also not making contact and had to be reformed. He said it took him over two hours to bring the instrument up to snuff internally and cost over one benjamin. There were still some compromises that he was not entirely happy about but to my ears it does sound a great deal better. I am well enough pleased with the instrument now and its general playability is good, but it did increase my cost quite a bit.

Great Guitar for Beginner and Pro

By Nathan Boyer

from Colorado

Comments about Regal RD-40 Resonator:

This is a great guitar for those learning to play blues, bluegrass, country, etc. I'm sure a pro could make this model sing better yet.
The guitar I received is beautiful, has a nice finish, and in working condition. The bridge is cheap and I will probably replace it at some point for a better sound and longevity.
The parts on my guitar have not given me any problems. However, you get what you pay for. Obviously, more expensive guitars are made with better woods and hardware. But as long as you learn how to fine tune your instrument and maintain it--you're golden.
The sound is good all around. However, a better bridge might need to be installed and obviously get the right strings for your playing style.
The guitar I received is really nice and I love playing it. When I took it out of the box my wife said, "Wow, that's a sweet looking guitar!" It's a great guitar for the price.

A Lot of Bang for the Buck

By Randy Mallory

from Nashville, TN USA

Comments about Regal RD-40 Resonator:

Again, no gripes so far. On down the road, I may think about upgrading the cone - but so far, I'm surprised and impressed at this great little dobro for those of us on a budget.
As an owner of a squareneck OMI Dobro from the 70's, I was expecting to see some cut corners. But overall, I'm really impressed with the quality here - looks great and sounds great.
No resonator buzz as I've seen in other reviews. Does it sound as rich as my OMI Dobro, no - but a good run for the money. Beuatiful wood, no flaws in finish that I can see, vintage open-back keys that hold tune well. I'm impressed.
Are you kidding - this cost me about what I paid for my other Dobro nearly 40 years ago. I do wish it came with at least a gig bag - hopefully, I'll find a case that fits right.

      Comments about Regal RD-40 Resonator:

I bought this instrument for my 82-year-old brother who had cut off both thumbs and a finger at different times and while they had been reattached, don't work well anymore. He had played the guitar but can no longer do that. He is thrilled with the dobro and says it's so beautiful. I'm sure he's already playing it, as he had some experience on a steel guitar.

      Comments about Regal RD-40 Resonator:

I have been looking into getting into acoustic blues for some time but i didn't really like the soft almost to warm sounds of an affordable acoustic guitar so i spent 4 months researching the resonator guitar and i settled on this one based on the affordability and the companies history. soo when i finally got this guitar and took it out of the box i threw on some martin bluegrass strings and i was set to go. ( i later had to take the guitar apart to fix the buzzing spider bridge put some napkins under the legs) after all had been said and done i sat down and started playing it. i was amazed at the ease of playing this guitar it frets better than most acoustic guitars costing upwards of 4 and 5 hundred dollars and its high trebly and mids focused sounds put me out on center stage no matter where i stood. playing with a slide is rathere difficult but you can get used to it. all in all do yourself a favor and GET THIS GUITAR!!!!. Its perfect for anything from delta blues finger picked acoustic rock or anything you could throw at it.

                Comments about Regal RD-40 Resonator:

Got my natural mahogany finish square neck RD-40 about 4 months ago, haven't put it down yet. I don't know if this is just 1 in a 100 or if all RD-40s are this great, but mine is. Excelent tone and what blows me away is the projection this thing is loud, no banjo picker will drown you out. Fit and finish are great no flaws to be seen. The only thing I can say bad is the strings were not the best, put on new martins and loven life. Look at this one if your really lookin for a quality resonator (Dobro).

                Comments about Regal RD-40 Resonator:

Mine is a violin burst square-neck and to me it is as beautiful to look at as any of the ten-times more expensive ones I've seen. Aside from the looks, I love the way it sounds. As previously stated; the bridge is plain maple rather than maple/ebony, and the nut is micarta rather than bone, and maybe it would sound even better with a Beard cone and spider, but that's why the RD-40 doesn't cost a king's ransom.

First off, this is a inexpensive Dobro it has cheap tuners and spider- cone etc. but it sports good looks and more importantly a Good tone for the price range. Hey I've played my Martin D-45 at a back country Venue with people there playing anything from Martin D-28 to D-35 and various Gibson and Guilds to an assortment of Chinese, Korean, and you name it guitars Banjoes, fiddles and Mandolins. The thing that really counted was people were enjoying playing and listening to the music, that being said play whatever you can afford to play or want to play and be happy, I for one will take my Regal Dobro and play it anywhere as I say, to each his/her own !!!

Excellent Dobro for the money. Needs a better set up. Guitar has a good tone and excellent playability for a sub $500 instrument. Plan on a bone nut upgrade and better maple/ebony saddles. Super nice finish and clean workmanship. That Dobro sounds is going round!

I've had my vintage sunburst roundneck for about a week now. Sounds awesome. I can find no flaws in the finish or workmanship. Neck feels nice. I changed strings which made the slide sound better. A really good value & very playable.

My daughter bought it for me at Christmas. Did a little tun-up to the cone and wow! sounds great! Of course you can buy a better sounding one, but for this price, Great Resonator. I now need a case for it??
