Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I am MORE than THRILLED with this mandolin! This is my first mando, but I have played fiddle for about 5 years, guitar for around 4 and 1/2, and I also play the banjo, piano, and am starting the cello. The reason I am saying this is to point out that I know what sounds good and what doesn't. I have been around MANY professional musicians, and so I know what a professional mando sounds like.
This is definitely a "starter" instrument and could use strings other than what came on it, but, overall, it has a great sound and is a wonderful beginner mando!
The G strings still have a slight buzz, even after I raised the bridge quite a bit, but it isn't that bad. Just not professional quality, but I am happy with it!

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I've had this mandolin for years and every time I turn around, I'm having to put more money into it to fix problems. Nut has broke 2 times, bridge is currently broken, and the pick guard has broken 2 times. When the pick guard breaks, it leaves marks on the body of the mandolin. I won't stay in tune, even with high quality strings. It's a waste of money. Both it and the Rogue guitar I have are poor quality.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

This mandolin is a great value for a student or intermediate player. It sounds good for the price paid, and has a nice finish. It is also sturdy and withstands stuffing into the musician's gear mandolin case, which is slightly undersized.

Mine came badly in need of tuning and bridge setup and placement. Get help with this if you need it! After proper setup mine plays fine and is an instrument I am proud to own.

I waited for the sale prices and got the mando and hardcase for a song. Musician's Friend does it again.

I would rate four and a half starts if that option was available.

      Rock on!

People say that this isn't all that great to learn on, but I love mine. I've had it for about a month and I'm very pleased. I play guitar and this isn't hard to catch onto at all. Shipping was excellent too, about 3 days, and I recieved it on Presedents day, in all I recommend this and if you want fast shipping then grab it from here!

My first mandolin was a Kentucky. It cost me five times as much as the Rogue but the action was just terrible, not fun to play at all. Then one day I saw this used Rogue hanging in a music shop. I picked it up and WOW!!! It was a zillion times easier to play and better sounding. Those super fast tremolo picking techniques are now a breeze. I have put this on dozens of recordings and everyone loves it. Especially me. Thanks for building such a fine instrument at such a great price.

After 40 years of playing guitar I decided to branch out a bit and try learning the mandolin. Having bought Rouge products before I was less than concerned with the negative reviews. It's true, you get what you pay for but with Rouge I have always got more than my moneys worth. Straight out of the box, with some tuning, the mandolin was ready to play. Within 15 minutes of watching some youtube instructional videos, I was playing Rolling in My Sweet Baby's Arms. The instrument stays in tune and has a fairly nice tone. There was a buzz on the top G string at the nut but after a few days of playing it has vanished.

If you've ever wanted to learn mandolin this little gem is a steal. I recently compared it to an Ibanez that costs at least three times as much. They were relatively the same. Yes I am a beginner and don't yet know the finer details to look for. But the Rogue has very nice sound and fretting. The finish is very good and the tuners have held quite well. For the money, you won't be disappointed with the purchase.
