Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Finding it hard to resist a nice looking, inexpensive mandolin, I bought a Rogue. Not long after I'd gotten it, the neck joint came unglued. No trauma was involved, just normal string tension pulled the neck loose from the body.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

This seems to be a good starter mandolin. I play a few instruments, but don't know much about mandolins. My younger brother has been learning on it for a few months and nothing about it has discouraged him from continuing to play. You can't beat this price for someone who is trying to figure out if they should pursue the mandolin!

This was kind of an impulse purchase one night. It's actually decent right out of the box. I expected that I would need to do some work on it for this price but I don't! Frets are good and action is good.

I bought this mandolin which they advertised as new
They gave me a used grimy stringed fret buzzing mandolin
I returned it and got a new one the only problem
Fret buzz still there on the second fret
Overall a good mandolin and I like it

I purchased two on the recommendation of a satisfied customer who showed me one. I bought two, kept one and gave the other to a younger player who did not yet have a mandolin. We're happy with them, thanks. These would be an economical way to start a mandolin band or orchestra.

Sounds fine with open chords. Still haven't tried to intonate it yet. Instructions explain that. We'll see how well that works given the bridge is not string specific. you can raise or lower it. Arrived with a ding in it. Lol. Its a cheapy and everyone knows it! Still, if the wife says its pretty I'm good with that. Crossed off my bucket list. It makes me want to play a high quality Mandolin just to see if there is much of a difference.

Purchased this for my granddaughter for her to see if she really wants to learn to play the mandolin. It is well constructed and plays well after a good setup. Well worth the price but as expected it can never sound like a higher level (more expensive with all hand carved solid wood, etc ) mandolin.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I have played guitar for about 35 years and enjoy playing bluegrass. I couldn't decide on a mandolin or a banjo for a new instrument to learn. When I found the Rouge mandolin for the price it was a no brainier. I've never played so I have nothing to compare it to so I've compared it as if it were a guitar, it's what I know.
This is a great beginner mandolin. Or maybe your advanced and want something to keep in the vehicle In case a hoe-down kicks off! It has a decent sound, a bit of sustain, loud....very loud, tuning keys stick and is hard to tune but to my surprise once tuned it stays there. I've played it and hour a day since I bought it about a week ago. Sometimes it'll fall flat just a bit but not complaining on a cheap instrument. I don't know of any cheapo guitar I ever had staying in tune like this thing does. As a matter of fact I don't tune it anymore than I tune my Taylor guitar in the same playing time. But I would add it may have to do with the strings. As I said Ive played guitar for a while and I know that you always keep strings on hand so I bought a set of Elixir strings w it. Glad I did. The strings that came on this thing were so rusty flecks of rust would chip as I ran my fingers down them. I didn't even try to tune them. I tossed em, tightened up all the screws on it since some were loose including the tuning keys and put the new strings on. Set the bridge and intonation, tuned it up and greased the tuning keys. Found some chords online and was playing rhythm on three songs within an hours time....all total. Now I imagine playing solos w this thing will require more time. So to sum it up. If you're a beginner or you child wants to learn to play but not sure. You can't go wrong with this one. If your thinking of buying it...go ahead. Oh, go ahead and grab a capo, you'll be glad you did.
