Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Granted I'm not a mandolin player but I build custom electric guitars and have been playing music for 40 plus years. I bought this mandolin simply because I wanted to try and learn a different instrument. When it arrived I pulled it out of the box and it was almost ready to play. Now I do know it is nothing like a Gibson or other high money mandolin but for the money it's a steal of a deal.I did later cut the nut slots a little deeper to my liking and slid the bridge back a little to help with the intonation but other than that it's ready to play! I couldn't even by tuning keys for that kind of money if I was gonna build one! It's a great deal if you just want to learn to play. If I ever decide that I'm no mandolin player, I'm sure I could sell it and get my money back!

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I bought this mando as a backup for my Ovation electric when I can't use an amp or don't want to bring out the more expensive Ovation for camping trips etc. It plays well for an instrument that has not been professionally set up, and it is louder than the unamplified Ovation which is a real plus when taking it to bluegrass jams where we don't use amps.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I have never played mandolin but I have been a guitarist for 45 years. I bought the Rogue in black on sale to see if I liked playing the mandolin. I carefully set up the mandolin and was surprised by the good tone and volume. The action is higher than it needs to be especially at the nut. So, I will eventually correct that. The bridge has adequate height adjustment range and will not require any modifications. The strings sound good but I don't expect them to last more than a few weeks. I think it is worth my time to properly setup the Rogue to reduce fatigue. I had the mandolin a few days, learned a few scales and chords, and brought it to my local bluegrass jam. After playing for a couple hours, everyone was surprised at the sound and quality of this 'cheap' instrument. Maybe someday I'll buy a quality F-style, but for now I'm enjoying the ride.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Ordered the Rogue mandolin up when it was on sale. Got it home, and tuned it up. It was brutal to get tuned up the first time, but after the first tuning, it has held tune pretty well.

Mine is the sunburst finish. The finish is not perfect around where the body meets the neck, but nothing that bothers me for the money.

Plays quite well, but it is definitely harder to hold notes than on a guitar. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my little mando.

For the price it is solidly built, and again for the price I would have given it a five star rating but the e string broke on first tuning.

It seemed to be pretty close to set up right out of the box. The bridge was in the correct location or very close to it.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I've been playing guitar since the 1960s, always wanted to learn mandolin, but had only ever picked one up for a minute or two in a music store. I always seemed to have a problem getting my fingers in those itty-bitty spaces between the frets. Was browsing the MF catalog one night recently, saw this instrument at a great price, and told my wife, "I'm going to get one."

It did NOT play well right out of the box, you probably will need to spend some time getting it set up. Loosen the strings, take out the bridge, lower the saddle to its lowest level, then put the bridge back and follow the enclosed instructions. After a little time for adjusting, tuning, and intonation, it played like a charm.

DON'T RUSH IT! My biggest problem was trying to take shortcuts. Take the time necessary for a good setup, and you will be rewarded. If you're not comfortable setting it up yourself, find a friend or someone who can do it for you.

I am very pleased with this little Rogue. Have done some jamming with friends, and can actually make some music with it. Maybe one of these days I will even get proficient. But it is a GREAT value for someone who just wants to try out the mandolin and see if you like it. Just be aware that it will probably require a little setup work up front.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I have been playing guitar since I was a kid, and wanted to learn to play the mandolin. I purchased the Rogue because it was cheap, and I could get see how I like the mandolin without spending too much on an instrument I didn't know how to play. I had such a hard time playing the Rogue. I read on a forum that mandolin strings are harder to press than a guitar, and figured I just needed to get used to it. I tried different strings, and just kept practicing, but the action never felt good on this mandolin. After over a year of playing this instrument I decided to try out a few higher quality mandolins in person at a local music store. I couldn't believe how much easier they are to play. I ended up buying a new mandolin, and wish I would have tried others out sooner. I bought the Gretsch New Yorker, but would have loved any of The Loar mandolins if I wanted to splurge. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more on a better mandolin. You will have more fun, and improve much quicker. The difference in the feel of my new Gretsch compaired to the Rogue is night and day.

Decided that I wanted a mandolin to emss around with, and this guitar fills that role perfectly. Not much of an investment at all and the tone is decent. It just feels cheap (that's because it is cheap). Highly recommend if you want something to pick up and noodle around on every now and then. I wound up taking off the pick-guard, because it was causing a nasty rattle. Otherwise, it has no really obvious flaws (it's also kind of a pain to keep in tune, but I suspect that's the case for most mandolins).

It's a fun little toy that's great for beginners
