Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

A couple of things you'll want to pick up to accompany this mandolin are
2067 Earthwood 80/20 Bronze Mandolin Light Strings (Item # 100737000000000) and
      Hardshell A-Style Mandolin Case(Item # 544411000000000)

The best thing to do is get rid of the strings that come with this mandolin. They are absolutely terrible. Then you'll want to sand the bottom of the bridge. Its an easy easy fix and really brings the volume/tone up on this inexpensive instrument. I cut a piece of 80-grit sandpaper so it would fit between the f-holes and laid it on the body (rough side out!). Then I placed the bridge where it would typically sit, and moved it back/forth (no more than an inch), taking excess material off the bridge. Once I got a good fit (it took some time patience), I used a piece of 120-grit to clean the bottom of the bridge (sanding along the grain instead of against).

Using a chromatic tuner, I set the intonation on the 1st and 4th strings. Perfection wasn't possible by by-golly it was close. I didn't tune to the open note of each string. Instead I used a much lower open note, which allowed enough string slack to still move the bridge. Then, I set the height of the bridge, going as low as I could get away with. Once everything was in place, I installed the rest of the strings and tuned the instrument. Tone is sweet. Action is sweeter. Volume is outstanding (compared to before). A few frets are slightly sharp but thats to be expected.

If you're handy, save some coin and pick this up.

This is a great value. It looks great. Plays well and the action surprised me. What a deal
The RM 100A Mandolin came out of the box in great condition. The Sound quality is great. The mandolin was clean and void on any scratches and there was no string buzzing. The strings have stayed in tune and I am very please with this entry level mandolin. Do yourself a favor and buy this mandolin. I got the black and it was well worth the money I paid for it. thank you

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Received my black finish model for a Christmas present from the wife and kids (I picked it out based on reviews). Had a tech at the local music store do the setup, which included lowering the bridge, along with installing a new set of strings (purchased GHS lights). I'm not disappointed with the results! Professional musicians I know are shocked when they see and hear it. Removing the pick guard gives you more bark, although volume is already decent.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I to bought the RM-100A to tinker with. For $** you just cant go wrong. I wasn't concerned about the quality of the finish and I did'nt really expect much sound wise. But once again, for the price, the sound is amazing. The finish was better than I expected (not perfect). The only thing really wrong with this instrument is the tuning keys, no suprise really. They are hard to tweek, but once in tune they seem to hold quite well.. If you are looking for something to learn on, $** (now) you still cant go wrong..NOTE: The above rating I gave are based on the price of this unit..

I've had this mandolin for around 4 months and I love it, its not as good as a Michael Kelly but its good for a Rouge and the money. The tuners are pretty good, the action is good, and the sound is pretty good as well, but like I said before its no Michael Kelly but its good for the money. If this is your first one, I suggest getting it.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

As a guitar player of seven years, I decided it was time for me to try a new instrument. On recomendation by my instructor, I decided to look for a mandolin because of my love for Led Zeppelin. I chose this one because of the cheap price and good reviews, but I was surprised with the outcome. This thing was great. Starting off setting the intonation was easy, but it did take a while to tune before it settled in, as most instruments do. After playing some more high quailty mandolins, you start to understand the cheap price, but as a beginner, this thing rocked! I still use it and it keeps its high quality over long periods of time (it survived a cross country move!).

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I was very surprised and, pleased with this instrument. So far the only setup I have done is to lower the action and, it was playable. I ordered the sunburst model and, it looks super. I plan to put a new set of strings on and, give a final check over but, at this time I'm leaving it as it is. I did add a JJB Electronics Marcato pickup that I had in my gig bag and, when I plugged it into my Fishman Artist amp without a preamp it sounded very good, way beyond my expectations. I am very pleased with this mando and, truthfully for the value of the instrument and, what is paid for it you can't beat it. I really don't how they sell these at this price, better get one B4 somebody figures it out.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

This mandolin is great at what it's designed for; entry level experimentation.

I've had Rogue instruments in the past and have been very pleased with their designed entry-level performance. Once your skills are acquired you can move on to a better instrument and donate what you don't need to someone who can use it.

I have a lot of experience with Asian-made instruments and generally have very few complaints. The quality of this mandolin is very nice and you can't beat it for the price. In fact you could do a lot worse.

Right off the bat you're told that you have to set this thing up yourself. It's not that difficult but if you've never done it before it can be a challenge. My thoughts are, though, that if you're going to play, you need to be at least minimally able to maintain your instruments. Basic set up is part of that maintenance.

The strings come slacked so I lowered the bridge all the way down to start. Then I tuned it an octave lowere than normal, watching for the string buzz I knew would come. I raised the bridge gradually until the buzz in each area was gone, retuning as I went.

That done I slacked the strings to set up the bridge. Instructions tell you to measure for the middle between the F holes. It's much easier to simply eye-ball the string alignment on the neck, making sure they are parallel to the edge of the finger board.

From there you can either measure for equidistance between the nut and the 12th fret and the 12th fret and the bridge or just get it back to where it came, which is pretty close to where it should be. Follow the intonation instructions by tuning the G and E with an electronic tuner. Work slowly and it should take you less than an hour. Don't concern yourself if it takes longer.

Since no kid wakes up one day and decides they want to learn mandolin I will presume most of you reading this are here to try something new, just like me. I've tried banjo, bass and ukulele. I'm basic at all but can fill in in any band if need be.

This a great instrument to learn on and move up from and that's what I plan to do. I was very pleasantly surprised at the resonance and sustain of a laminate of this price but it is really there. Once the intonation is set it sounds fantastic. Since it's not designed for stage use I don't plan on using it for that and neither should you.

One more thing; DO NOT buy the beginners' kit they sell here. I did and I regret it. But I wanted to see what was provided. Use the extra savings for a strap and some strings. Then head to YouTube for instruction. There's lots there.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I have never held a mandolin until I received this one. Frankly, it was always too cost prohibitive to even think about.

This mandolin allows me to see if I am interested and capable of playing the mandolin. I played guitar (sort of) for a long long time, and played the ukulele for about five years, but wasn't going to make a major investment to evaluate my interest. But for the price? How could you not try it out?

The mandolin FAR exceeded my expectations. Looks good, feels solid, sounds good (with new strings). And it arrived in just three days. Musician's Friend does such a good job at getting orders out.

Go ahead and get good strings. I used D'Addario. And keep the setup instructions - you will need them to adjust the instrument. It isn't intuitive, but it works.

As a non-player (yet) I can't tell you if the tonal quality is wonderful or marginal, but it isn't awful. It's better than I will be for a long time. And if I get better and want to spend more, I bet I can get my money out of this one.

Seriously, this price for this instrument is amazing. Buy it just for the "Oh wow, you have a mandolin?" factor.

I might have to learn about bluegrass. I'm awestruck.

I have been playing guitar since I was a kid, and wanted to learn to play the mandolin. I purchased the Rogue because it was cheap, and I could get see how I like the mandolin without spending too much on an instrument I didn't know how to play. I had such a hard time playing the Rogue. I read on a forum that mandolin strings are harder to press than a guitar, and figured I just needed to get used to it. I tried different strings, and just kept practicing, but the action never felt good on this mandolin. After over a year of playing this instrument I decided to try out a few higher quality mandolins in person at a local music store. I couldn't believe how much easier they are to play. I ended up buying a new mandolin, and wish I would have tried others out sooner. I bought the Gretsch New Yorker, but would have loved any of The Loar mandolins if I wanted to splurge. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more on a better mandolin. You will have more fun, and improve much quicker. The difference in the feel of my new Gretsch compaired to the Rogue is night and day.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I have been playing for 30 years and when I saw this mandolin I was skeptical. I had to buy one because it was so cheap. All I can say is wow.. I am amazed that this mandolin is so cheap and very well made.

Mine came missing the screw on the pick guard but that is no big deal. I was shocked that when it arrived I did not need to do much set up on it. I made some adjustments on the bridge height but other than that I was surprised.

This mandolin does not have a truss rod in the neck so you would need to make sure you don't take it in extreme temperature changes.

If you are wondering if it is worth buying this mandolin, all I can say is you better grab one while you can. Its well worth it and I cant put the thing down.

Don't wait another second, buy one now, while you can.
