Got this awesome little thing a few weeks ago and played songs with it that night! It's so easy to play! Cool celtic like sound. And for the price it is a great quality instrument. Built for learners or experts. I handed it to my 9 year old niece and she sounded great! The frets are on a scale rather than chromatic so you can't make it sound bad. Lots of fun.

I didn't like that the wood is bare. There isn't any finish on the neck at all and feels strange on my hand. I imagine after playing it for a week it would be dirty from the oils in my hands. That made it seem cheap to me and I sent it back. I am familiar with the sound of a dulcimer but realized I was no longer interested in something with such a limited sound. Still it is a fun easy instrument to play and a great gift for someone who likes folky instruments and wants to play music but doesn't want to have to put in a lot of hours of study.

Comments about Seagull Merlin Mahogany SG Dulcimer Guitar:

I'm not a corporate stooge. I'm not selling this to anyone. I'm a Rock Musician for 40 years. I bought this for my wife for Christmas and we jammed all day. Best Christmas in years! Bought the Mahogany top model. Great sound. Incredible well made. I had to find the nicely embroidered Seagull Merlin Gig-Gag elsewhere! Why doesn't M.F. sell it too??? I may get the "G" model to expand my options. Lets be honest.. this instrument is limited, but, my wife easily went from from "You Are My Sunshine" to "The World I Know " by Collective Soul. Good luck finding Chord charts. You'll figure it out. Lots of goofy YouTube Vids to inspire you. You will enyoy. ...T

Comments about Seagull Merlin Mahogany SG Dulcimer Guitar:

Three words to describe: Fun, Fun, Fun! Great quality, even better sound, easy to play, was playing songs immediatly... Could use about 3 more frets up the neck (dulcimers have much more range) but overall it is a great instrument. I bought this as a guitar player to play along with my wife on her (real) dulcimer: they sound fantastic together!

My wife has been trying to teach me to play the guitar forever with little success. I bought one of these based on the reviews and every bit of it was true. easy easy easy! I thought myself to play a couple of songs by ear in just a few hours. This is a beautifully crafted little instrument. It is easy to tune and very forgiving when I fail to hold a string down properly. I highly recommend it for anyone but mostly for someone who wants a first string instrument that builds skills and confidence.

Comments about Seagull Merlin Mahogany SG Dulcimer Guitar:

really fun instrument to play around with. needed something different to add to my music. this little guy is easy to play , its much louder than expected, and the build quality is great.
kind of sounds like a banjo and mandolin mixed.
celtic I guess. hard to put down.

Comments about Seagull Merlin Mahogany SG Dulcimer Guitar:

This is an odd looking little instrument, but it shows typical Seagull quality, despite it's less than "showy" finish. It is light, tunes easily, and has a fuller sound than other similar "strum stick" type dulcimers. A little tricky to hold while playing, but not as bad as some "travel guitars" I've played. A strap helps a good bit.
For this kind of dulcimer guitar, it seems to be the value leader in sound. The short scale is a little limiting, but it still has many uses and has to be a best buy.

Looks like I might have to get one for myself!

Good volume for such a small instrument. Easy to get started, but hard to put down. Quality construction. This is the first stringed instrument I've ever been able to play and have it sound good. Looks to be something our whole family may enjoy together.

I absolutely love this instrument. Because of the way that it is freted(as a scale) the minute that I opened the package I was able to start playing songs. My only complaint is that it is hard to find any chord charts.

Comments about Seagull Merlin Mahogany SG Dulcimer Guitar:

I play and teach mountain dulcimer, and thought it might be good for accompaniment. It will work for that. It's easy to pick out tunes and fun to play. Seagull has a good reputation. The lack of the 6 1/2 fret might present a challenge. Maybe in time I'll get the extra fret installed. It depends upon how I use the instrument.
