I had been wanting a 12-string guitar for some time, as I perform as an acoustic duo, and knew many of our songs would benefit from the fuller sound of a 12-string. Looked at and played a Taylor 12-string, but just couldn't justify dropping 2 g's on one. I remembered playing my friend's Alvarez a while back, and enjoying it, so I gave the Alvarez AJ60SC12 Artist Series Jumbo 12-String Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar a go. I've now played four gigs on it and absolutely love it. My 6-string is a Martin, and it has been a seemless switch between the 2 guitars for me. The action is perfect, the electronics are more than enough (really have not needed to fine-tune much beyond the equalizer), have had zero feedback problems (not even needing to use the notch control!), the built-in tuner is very handy, and the comments on the sound from our audience have been extremely positive. The build quality is excellent and the guitar has stayed in tune with very little need for any adjustment. The guitar sounds wonderful unplugged as well. I would recommend buying the Alvarez soft-shell case, as it is very nicely constructed (as other reviewers have said). I really feel this guitar is a bargain at the price for which it is offered and look forward to many years of playing enjoyment. I believe a past review mentioned that there were not guitar strap pegs, but that may have been on an older version of this model - mine has them and I find them to be well placed. Highly recommended - Thank you for a fine product, Alvarez!

Let the buyer beware. Musician's Friend nat'l distribution center is in my home town, KC. So I have the advantage of being a walk-in customer. I arrived, fully intending to buy a the Alvarez AJ60SC12 12-string. When the salesman brought out the guitar from the warehouse (brand new in a factory-sealed carton) it had a big crack in the body that ran from the low E-string position on the bridge to the outer edge of the guitar. I assumed that the guitar had met with an unfortunate accident during shipping. I asked the salesman to fetch another one. He did. Same crack. I bought an Ovation CC-045-HB instead (LOVE IT!) Let the buyer beware.

Alvarez = Value!!!

By Tim in GA

from Alpharetta, GA

I own one Alvarez already (a PF90S) and this will probably be my next acoustic. I've played it several times and love the playability and tone. Sure, you can find better sounding guitars, but to do so, you have to spend considerably more. You know... the usual suspects... But this guitar will even hold its own against them to all but the most discriminating ear. As much as I love this one, I only give this 9's because I've also played the PJ85 (solid spruce/solid rosewood) which I would rate 10's. By the way... if you pick up one and it's cracked, don't buy it.

Alvarez 12-string is an excellent value

By Jim Baldridge

I compared this 12-string with two of the "big guns," Taylor and Guild. I was on the verge of buying the Taylor, a very fine instument (I already have two Taylor 6-strings), but decided to give the Alvarez a try, principally because it has a solid Engleman Spruce top. Once I had it thoroughly set up, including string height and intonation, it is a really sweet, attractive, well-made guitar. I recommend it highly.

Nice little Jumbo

I just have to say this is one pretty special 12 string guitar. I have been playing over thirty years. The quality of this guitar at this price is amazing. The guitar plays as easily as an electric 12 string. It stays in tune very well ( I have touched up the tuning twice in about a week and a half). The preamp and tone are quite good. It does have Maple back and sides so it is and should be brighter than Mahogany. The Maple does tone down the normal heavyness of a Jumbo body. The tone does fit well into a mix. I have to say this is a great guitar at a great price for an acoustic/preamped 12 string. Highly recommend.

Bright, clean sound

By Will-8-XMF

from Philadelphia, PA

I'm always skeptical about glossy guitars... I just personally don't like them. But this guitar puts out a beautiful bright and clean sound. The jumbo body pushes the sound extremely well. I don't plug it in very often, however the built in tuner is a MUST HAVE for 12 strings (they are a pain to tune). Love this guitar!

Great guitar with full, clean sound

By Mitchell-L

from Williamstown, MA

The active electronics on this puppy are excellent and deliver a really clean signal with a good deal of control over the tone. The built-in tuner is nice too. The jumbo body gives off plenty of sound...great for live gigs where an amp cannot be used. Overall, smooth playability, superb action and sounds like butter. Absolutely beautiful too.*My other guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Standard and I am happy to display this alongside that beauty.

Excellent value !!

I bought this 12 string Alvarez about 1 month ago. I have been playing guitar for 25 years and I have a variety of guitars from Alvarez's to Ibanez's to Taylor's and Martin's. I looked at a much more expensive 655 CE Taylor at Guitar Center and played it. Don't get me wrong the Taylor was beatiful and sounded just awesome. But I had to scale back because of the price. So I looked at this Alvarez from advice from a friend. I'm glad I did!! This guitar just rings and projects great even unplugged!! The System 600T Preamp gives excellent sound reproduction and adjustability. For the price you think you would be playing a much more expensive guitar!! If your looking for an acoustic electric 12 string that is awsome and inexpensive but something you'll never give up then this is the one!! Also I would like to add that action is excellent also!! Bravo Alvarez !!

Very Impressive

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I played this guitar recently at a local music shop. It was priced a bit higher than the sale price with Musicians Friend. The sound that this guitar put out was amazing. It was very rich and and each string projected clearly. Some twelve strings tend to have a muddy sound, but this one was full and distinct. It reminded me of a twelve string Taylor that I have used in the past. The only drawback was the Made in China aspect. I own instruments that were made in China and many of them are good quality like this one. It's a personal preference I guess. I own a Garrison G series which is Made in Canada and I'm thinking about a Seagull Twelve string which is also Made in Canada. If Made in China doesn't bother you, then I would jump on this deal.

Wow

By Marleyman

Quality isn't an issue here. The issue is the question as to whether or not you think an alvarez can sound and play like a taylor or martin. Well, it can sound rich and play easily enough. However, a martin has a marbled sound this guitar cant yet attain. Give it ten years with a sound musician and the wood will season up and you will hear a decernable difference in the piece. All in all im a bettr player because of the ease of play with this one but a tayloris still dominant in its sound. This conclusion after months and several different sets of strings. If you purchase you will be satisfied.

gorgeous sound and looks

I've owned the AJ60SC12 now for close to two years. I have been amazed at it's playablity, sound, and looks. I've owned 12 string Ovations, (fretboard warped and neck snapped on it), Takamine, (another great sounding 12 string), and a Washburn (no comment). You won't go wrong buying this guitar no matter what "jayflip" has to say. It's an incredible instrument and I get nothing but compliments!
