An affordable guitar with a hand-selected solid spruce top, rosewood back and sides, and an open tone.

The Alvarez Artist Series AP70 Parlor Guitar is one of the most popular models in the whole Alvarez line. It has fantastic energy and response for its size and is incredibly comfortable to play. Center-scalloped bracing was used for this parlor, which lets the top really react to the finest of touches. This probably might make you play this small-bodied guitar differently to how you would larger instruments, which leads to all sorts of great stuff.

The AP70 is a member of the Artist Series 70s, which are stunning guitars made from hand-selected A-grade Sitka with rosewood backs and sides. The high gloss finish really brings out the beauty and grain in the rosewood and like all Artist Series they have advanced scalloped bracing and all natural components. Just like Artist 60 models the 70’s have incredible tone and the rosewood helps to accentuate the highs and lows just a tad more.

The term “solid top” of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The all-new Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid A-grade Sitka spruce tops are hand selected from quartersawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

New Artist Series guitars look stunning and all of their components are made of natural materials such as mother of pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

As I said above, this guitar was very playable right out of the box. In spite of the slight issues with the action and the tuners -which could be corrected by your local tech- I am very satisfied with this instrument. The size is fun, so is the 12-fret neck once you get use to it. I really like the minimalist effect of the guitar, nothing too fancy but a nice abalone rosette, single inlay at the 12th fret, and simple headstock logo -just the Alvarez logo, not the name; the name is on the back of the headstock. So may not like the pickguard (if yours comes with it) but it can be easily removed or changed. I'm rather fussy about things like bridge pins and tuners, so I'm really glad the AP70 came with wooden bridge pins. I put Grover tuners on ALL my guitars so the tight tuner was not really an issue for me. Due to the small size of this guitar, I used a Planet Waves woven strap to hold it up and/or play sitting in classical position. It's a good alternative to a 3/4 size guitar if you have a kid who plays guitar or if you are a really small person. The tone of this guitar is very deep and mellow, I'm not big on the D'Addario EXP strings but they're good strings and strings are a personal issue for everyone anyway. If you are interested in a 12-fret parlor, definitely buy this guitar. Would ABSOLUTELY replace is lost of stolen!
To review the specs: Solid sitka spruce top. Laminate Rosewood B/S. Bone nut and saddle. Abalone rosette, chrome tuners. Great parlor guitar for the price, most others are at least twice as expensive. I got mine directly from St. Louis Music so I didn't have to wait. Mine came with the standard black Alvarez-shaped pickguard. Wooden bridge pines (snakewood, I believe) which is rare on a guitar in this price range.
Nice clean construction inside and out No excess glue or cracked bracing. No blemishes on the outside. Tuners are a bit tight (I switched mine to Grovers). Action a bit high, nut could be sanded a bit but still very playable. Nice deep tone. Very playable right out of the box.
This guitar really can't be beat for it's price. Parlors are becoming more and more popular but most still cost at least twice as much. I've played parlors in the $700 range or more with just as high quality. Since cases for parlors are hard to come by, I think Alvarez should throw in a gig bag for an extra $50 or maybe a hardshell for a bit more?

I've been looking for the perfect travel guitar. I've played most of the small bodied "travel" guitars and found them wanting for tone. The best of the bunch before this was the GS Mini in Koa. However, the Alvarez is a good solution-it's a 00 sized body, and the 12 fret neck shrinks the overall length without changing the scale, and, because the bridge is closer to the center of the soundboard, results in a deeper, fuller bass. Soundwise I have NO problems with the guitar.

Where it fell down a little was in the construction. Even with the truss rod completely loose there was NO relief in the neck, so it buzzed on firmly strummed low notes. Since that's where I live at times, it just didn't work. I sent it back and have another one on the way, I hope it'll be better, although I played another at a local store (for twice the price!) and it had almost no relief either. I hope this isn't a pattern…

Weird thing: I paid with Paypal. Apparently they can't do a return exchange with Paypal, had to return the guitar for credit and order another one! I guess I'll just use the credit card for MF from now on.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AP70 Parlor Guitar:

Amazing tones coming from this parlor guitar. It's a symphony unto itself. I bought this for my daughter and I've stolen it from her. I'm sorry. I'm sure a Martin parlor (priced around $2000+) would sound/play better--but I can't believe it's THAT much better. I own a Martin D-28 and an old Alvarez Yari, amongst others, and the AP70 holds it's own with these. Fantastic guitar! A lot louder than you would expect. Extremely comfortable to hold...pure joy to play. Love it. I'd buy it again in a second were something to happen to it. The black pick guard is cheesy, though, and I took it off immediately upon opening the package.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AP70 Parlor Guitar:

I've been a solid player for years and can always find quality sounds in things other guitarist tend to turn their nose up to. That said this is a great guitar Alvarez has put out. I love Parlor guitars because nobody plays them. Its different. The bass sounds great on this guitar. If anything I would say the treble sounds a bit boxy but I'm hoping to try some different strings like John Pearce brand to liven the treble up a bit. Overall I am super happy with this guitar. I take it to work every day and play for 30 minutes. I play it at home because I've got kids and its not as loud as my Alvarez AD60EC. Alvarez knows how to build great guitars for any budget and these artist series guitars are a steal! I bought mine for half price because it was a restock. Pick up a Musicians Gear Classical guitar case and it fits perfectly!

This guitar is not a Martin, but that's not the point. It's not $3000 either, and for the money it's a great sounding guitar for acoustic country blues and fingerpicking.

I got this as a "Stupid Deal," so I got an extra-good deal as well as the fast free shipping and excellent customer service that makes me an mf customer for life. I had never played a parlor guitar before, but I (understandably) thought it would be a tiny little voice for use on the sofa or as a bedroom guitar. BOY, was I wrong! This baby is loud! Maybe it's the rosewood back & sides, but this thing is very full and punchy, with lots more bass than my Baby Taylor. The 12-fret neck is very comfortable, and the overall fit and finish makes it a real joy to play. I am still stressing about getting a case that fits this piece, but on the other hand it may never leave my house! I am absolutely floored by the playability and sound of this piece. I truly would not be surprised if it had a price tag 3 or 4 times what it was.

For the first week my Martin didn't even come out of the case in favor of this little lady. Then comparison began and the Martin still wins, but then again it better win at the $$$ range.
I have no problem recommending this Alvarez AP70.

Lovin' it! What a great little guitar and what a good (restock) price from Musician's Friend. It played beautifully right out of the shipping container - no setup or tweaking required! My wife said it was the best music she'd ever heard from me - and this was on the first strum - and we've been married twenty years!

Pleased with the nice low action, the trebly tone and the feel of this little lady. (This instrument is definitely a "lady:) Looking forward to getting to know her better. The 12 fret neck and the harmonic sustain are pleasing to the fingers and the ear.

My only gripe is the cheapy pick guard, which I immediately removed. This Alverez AP-70 parlor guitar looks so much better without it. My only regret is that I did not buy a hard shell case (yet) to protect her...

I have five other guitars and have been playing for over forty years. You won't go wrong with this little instrument - highly recommended. Five stars.

This is a great little guitar. I love it. For the money it's a steal and you can't go wrong. Great note separation. It is not bass heavy. It's even sounding across the board. I've been playing for over 45 years and I've had some of the best built guitars ever made. I know guitars. Being that this is a laminated back and sides the tone doesn't have great depth though it is amazingly good. It's very easy to play so I can play for hours. This guitar has taken me in new directions. I'm now looking for a high end parlor guitar and putting a pick-up in it to expand my shows.
