OVERVIEW

Custom iconic Grateful Dead artwork on an affordable cedar-topped acoustic ideal for fans of the counterculture kings.

The Grateful Dead's relationship with Alvarez began in the 1980s, when both Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir collaborated with Alvarez luthiers to create their own signature models. The team experimented with many shapes, from dreadnoughts to jumbos, and incorporated favorite attributes from both bandmates, like a Modulus neck and Tree of Life inlay. These designs culminated in Bob Weir's WY1BW, the result of years of fine-tuning, which Bob still plays today.

As part of Alvarez's 50th Anniversary they have created this special guitar (with two artwork options) to commemorate this long-time collaboration with the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Grateful Dead enthusiasts will love the official artwork, applied to the cedar tops by an innovative screen printing process, and all guitarists will appreciate the fine construction, playability and tone of these instruments. The Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary acoustic features a solid A grade western red cedar top, screen-printed under a flawless satin finish.

Other appointments include custom mother-of-pearl "Lightning Bolt" inlays, the band's iconic Dancing Bear on the back of the headstock, a rosewood fingerboard and bi-level bridge and 12th fret lightning bolt inlay. Both models are constructed using the Alvarez FST2M hand-finished, forward-shifted, scalloped bracing system for optimal performance and response.

Inspired by classic Grateful Dead images, the custom artwork designs on these guitars have been applied using a custom screen printing process. Thanks to Mother Nature, each guitar top varies slightly in both grain and color, making every Alvarez Grateful Dead guitar a unique instrument, just like every Grateful Dead concert was its own unique experience.
Use the drop down menu to choose from Montage, with its psychadelic collage of some of the Dead's most beloved imagery, or Flag, which has a design inspired by the cover art from the out-of-print 2013 release, Dave's Picks Volume 8, a live album featuring the counterculture icons' performance at the Fox Theatre in Georgia in Novermber of 1980.

I received this as a gift. The guitar looks very nice and I like that the top does not have a thick glossy finish. The finish is more like a Seagull guitar. It has a nice bright sound to it, and plays very nicely. I am pleasantly surprised. I find it compares pretty well with a Seagull guitar (I have two of them). I am putting a pickup in it so I can play it around town.

This is the second one of these that I have purchased. I got a Montage one a while back and liked it a lot. This time I thought to try the flag model. This one was totally unplayable. I played one E chord on it and the high E string broke. Could just be bad luck. After replacing it, tried to play around further. Couldn't play open position chords due to the fret buzz. At higher frets the buzz was gone, but the action was so high that it was unplayable. No amount of adjustment could fix these issues. Had to return it. Fortunately, MF is good about their return policy. No questions asked. Just send it back. On the other hand they are also bad about returns in that obviously, from the repackaging, this guitar had already been returned by someone else. This has happened to me a lot with MF. They sell a lot of items as "new" when they are not. In this case it was returned for a reason. it is dishonest to try to sell it to someone else.

Comments about Alvarez Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Acoustic Guitar:

The print looks great on the cedar top! The construction quality is good, and I like the iveroid binding. Then they had to spoil it by leaving the action so high it was almost unplayable! I had to take a lot off the saddle, back off the truss rod and address a couple high frets and it plays great. I hope its just an early one that got by QC!

Comments about Alvarez Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Acoustic Guitar:

I'm really digging this guitar. I was looking for something to leave out in the house to make sure I always had something nearby ready to play. I was skeptical with this purchase, but I am a Grateful Dead fan and loved the art. Knowing the return policy was there if I didn't like it, I decided to give it a try. Very fast shipping. Was almost completely in tune when it arrived. Setup was fine. I approached this guitar knowing if there was anything I didn't like, I was going to return it. I still got it.

Not only is the guitar beautiful but it sounds fantastic. I was going to hang it up or put it on display but a guitar that sounds this good should be played. Alvarez did an amazing job on it. I will be playing this guitar at home and select gigs. Also the recording studio.

I read positive and negative review for this guitar before buying. Now that I have it I can't understand why anyone would bad mouth it. It delivers on every front(playability, fit and finish, value). I actually thought If nothing else the art work is worth hanging on my wall but I haven't put it down since it was delivered. Musicians friend got to me in 4 days and arrived safe and sound.

At first I was kind of hesitant about buying this think I was putting the deadhead in me before quality. After receiving this I was more than satisfied not only does it have a cool design but the sound is great and it plays nice. I would recommend this for any deadhead. Will be nice to when I play dead cover sets.

Comments about Alvarez Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Acoustic Guitar:

I liked this guitar and read the history behind it. I took the guitar to a party Sunday and played irish and jazz music. It played well, good projection, but not the overtones of the Alvarez masterwork series. I attribute this to the laminated back and sides. Also no built pickup and this was a terrible over sight making it a much weaker product.
I may keep it or sell it for a solid wood guitar. It is decent playing and special looking but, no pickup, no case, not being solid wood are clear set backs. I am tempted to return it

Comments about Alvarez Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Acoustic Guitar:

Enjoy the sound of the guitar, except when using a heavy/loud strum - that creates a noisy 'fret' sound (strings slap against fret board significantly in comparison to other acoustics). Overall I still enjoy the feel and sound of the guitar; just have to play it lightly.

Comments about Alvarez Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Acoustic Guitar:

I love the classic look of it with the Flag graphic. When taking this guitar out of the box I found myself blown A-W-A-Y! I expected some cheesy import slop with the kitschy graphics and el cheapo everything. NOT so. It is absolutely beautiful, 100% perfect. I own many guitars, lost count at around 50, so it's not my first rodeo. I gave it the usual close inspection and I cannot find a flaw in the workmanship ANYwhere. Nothing. No glue drips, no binding flaws, the inlay is perfect. It is solid as a rock. The neck is a rounded profile that's not too fat, not too thin. Just right. The fretwork has no sharp ends, no uneven spots anywhere. It is awesome and plays like a dream. Everything is done so well with attention to every detail. I simply can't say enough! The action is perfect to me, not low like an electric, so don't expect that. It's what you WANT in a new acoustic so the saddle is tall enough for adjustments on down the line. ALL acoustics ship that way. Better to err on the higher side than lower. Any guitarist worth their salt should know how to work on their guitar, like changing the oil in your car. It rings like a bell. That's what an acoustic guitar is all about. Hit the chords with no buzz! No holes cut into it, loaded up with stupid built in tuners or electronics. Clamp on a tuner to tune it & mic it if you need it amplified. You don't put digital, computerized instruments on a vintage Indian motorcycle, same for a traditional acoustic instrument. That's how they are meant to be. You add holes & doo-dads, you change the resonance of the wood. I own Larrivee', Taylor and Gibson acoustics, along with custom made stuff. THIS guitar sounds/plays as good as ANY of them. Truly amazing clarity and tone. The intonation is spot on. It stays in tune and I can't put it down! It's THAT nice. The solid cedar top gives it a super nice voice with plenty of volume and even tones. Does not have a label stating where it was made, but at this price, it's obviously Asia.

Comments about Alvarez Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Acoustic Guitar:

Art work, satin finish and binding are all very good. The setup was spot-on right out of the box (no dead spots or fret buzz). The tone and ease of play-ability are very good considering the smaller OM/Orchestra body style. I put a Seymour Duncan Woody XL with adjustable poles to extend the lower bass notes when amplified (prefect!).

I bought this to remember what it was like to be in San Francisco as an 18 year old kid who 'thought' he knew 'everything'...and to 'remind' me that I didn't have a clue...

The guitar looks very cool and is fun to play. A very nice tribute to the ultimate Jam Band. Hanging on the wall in my music room. A fun new guitar with a neat sound.

Love this guitar for the price. The one I own I bought from Musicians Friend at a reduced price. This was due to open container (box). I took a chance and received an impeccable guitar. I could not be more pleased. To boot, this Alverez "Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Guitar is more guitar that you might think. It is a solid Red Cedar top with solid Mahogany back and sides. The tone is amazingly mellow. Very versatile. I would recommend this guitar to any guitarist. Not for just "Dead Heads". However being around when Gerry started certainly made this decision easier.
