OVERVIEW

A stage-ready guitar with solid tonewoods and Fishman electronics.

This pre-war inspired herringbone dreadnaught has it all, including a deep cutaway and a factory installed Fishman Presys Blend pickup system. The instrument's already great sound and great looks have made this one of the most desirable acoustic guitars in production today. The cutaway offers greater accessibility to the higher frets, while the pickup system adds to its overall versatility.

Blueridge is an offshoot of the South San Francisco-based Saga Musical Instrument Company. Blueridge specializes in "traditional" guitars that offer today's player vintage styling with modern performance at a level of quality and price that compares favorably to historic guitars. Each instrument is the result of detailed research and is carefully crafted at the Blueridge factory. Consistency is evident throughout, from the fretwork to the intricate inlays that adorn each Blueridge headstock.

Fishman Presys Blend Under-Saddle Transducer
The compact sophisticated Fishman Presys Blend system features Volume, Bass, Mid and Treble controls, a Phase switch, and a built-in tuner with LED display. It also include a pre-wired Fishman Sonicore pickup, low-battery indicator, low profile control knobs, and best of all, a built-in microphone with mic blend level control. Its unique pivot design makes it easy to access the battery compartment.

Comments about Blueridge Historic Series BR-160CE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have played for 45 years, and have owned a Martin D18 and have a '65 Guild D40 that I bought new, so I have some experience with nice guitars. I bought this after looking at new and used high end Taylors and Martins.
This ax compares very favorably with the Taylor 710ce - yes, you heard that correctly! In all aspects - tone, playabilty, volume, finish, etc. - it is at least 90% as good at about 20-25 percent of the cost.
As received, the action was almost like an electric, actually too low for the bluegrass flatpicking and acoustic rhythm that I bought it for. There was a good deal of fret buzz. I put on medium strings (13's) and added just a touch of relief to the neck and the problem went away; definition between strings was a little muddy as received, but this change fixed all that. I didn't want to shim the saddle, or replace it with a new one since the saddle was already bone. I may still have a complete setup with new saddle at some point. At bluegrass jams many ask about it, commenting on its beauty of construction and sound. This thing is solid rosewood and spruce, has a bone nut and saddle, and incredibly beautiful inlay and binding. The tuners are copies of Waverly open geared butterbeans, and it has Fishman electronics. The bass player in my band likes it so much he is buying one. If you just have to have a D-28 or 710ce and have the money to spare, then get one. But you may be sorry when you play with someone with a BR-160 or BR-160ce.

Comments about Blueridge Historic Series BR-160CE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have read a lot of reviews on Blueridge guitars being comparable to Martins, and listened to video clip comparisons. I have an Alvarez AD70S which is a very nice guitar for the money. I was a bit skeptical that the BR-160ce would be that much better than my Alvarez. I'm not knocking Alvarez at all; they make good guitars, but the BR-160ce definitely has a much more rich, ringing, resonant tone. It is also quite a bit easier to play with nice comfortable, low action. I have never owned a Martin, so I can't really make a fair comparison there, but I have played a few in music stores, and I would say the BR-160ce probably sounds as good or better than most low-mid priced Martins. The BR-160 is supposed to be comparable to the Martin HD-28V. I would have to hear them side by side in real life to be able to make a comparison..I really love the Fishman electronics. I'm very impressed with how natural it sounds amplified. It is definitely a keeper! I really appreciate Musician's Friend giving musicians the opportunity to try gear at home before having to make the final decision to keep it or not.
