If you are a beginner this is your dream guitar. don't hesitate. Seasoned players will also enjoy the features, quality and sound. It has great performace strumming, finger & flat picking. EZ to tune & stays in tune. Recommend a set of light to medium cleartone strings, spendy but they really make this guitar sing out. In short, great guitar, electronics & case
Very pleased with the LR Bags PU and the EQ & onboard tuner. The Machine heads are a little slow but seem to be well made. Nice finish and a nice case.
No frills perfect finish, very well made. Really feels and plays like a high end guitar. I play through a Marshall acoustic amp & Line out to the PA for an amazing acoustic reproduction. Unplugged it sounds out with bright highs perfect lows and just the right mids for my taste and style of music (folk rock & acoustic blues). Susceptible to low end feedback through the PA. Consider a sound hole plug if you plan on that set up. Tuner seems spot on.
I bought this as a backup to my Taylor and American made Breedlove. I was thinking it would be a good practice and travel guitar. However, It has turned out to be a perfect fit for my style and have no problem using it during a performace. I'm amazed at the price.

Well built and finished, but tone unplugged and plugged is is disappointing to say the least. Accoustically, it was dead. I have an OM/ERe that is awesome, but this one if very muffled. I had to return it.
Has everything you need, but the new preamp/pickup is terrible. Not sure why they stopped using the StagePro, but please bring it back. That new one is too muddy and the eq is limited.
Breedlove makes great stuff.
Got it on sale, so good value then, but the new preamp makes is a lemon.

Guitar Nut

You will love this guitar if you want a fancy D18 at a bargain price.
Sounded great and I mean like D18 great right out of the case. Can't believe they can sell this quality and sound for this price. Chinese Guilds don't even come close. Sounds better than any import, Really as good or better than the same body made in America I have to say. Baggs system is really nice also. They even put an extra saddle and shims in the case if you want the action higher(it comes super low). My guitar was almost in tune when I got it! A pretty amazing value.
Can't beat it.

Breedlove Retro Series D/SMe

By David J. Smith

from Erie, PA

I own other, more expensive guitars, and this Breedlove holds its own against any of them. It will not replace a high end Taylor, but is an excellent guitar which I am not afraid to take outside of the house.
This is a very well-constructed guitar which resembles a Martin D-18V. It has both a vintage vibe and a true bluegrass acoustic sound, which will mature as the guitar ages. Any professional musician would not be afraid to be observed with this instrument. The tortoise binding and high-grade mahogany add to the minimalist, vintage appearance. The LR Baggs tuner is the best built-in tuner that I have used, while the actual pickup system is average, but it can be adjusted at the amplifier if one wants to modify its voicing. The features are very fine for a guitar in the price range. At the current price, it is simply a steal.
The overall build quality is outstanding for its price range. I have owned many guitars and could not find any flaw with the construction.
This guitar is also good for finger-style playing. Anyone looking for a high-quality, versatile guitar could not go wrong with this Breedlove. At the current on-line price, I do not think anyone offers a better deal. If you plan on dropping a grand or more for a Martin or Taylor, save some money and purchase this model while they are still around at this price.

Excellent guitar at (almost) Any Price

By James Roesch

from Florida

I purchased this guitar for my 22 year old son, whic plays ofetn as do I. I have a Martin (DC-16RGTE) single cutaway Dreadnaught with Fishman's Aura (onboard) electronics package. I love my Martin (solid spruce top and solid rosewood sides and back). Before I purchased my Marin I played a few mid priced Breedloves and while I liked them, I liked the Martin more. However, when this guitar came in the mail to my house, I craked it open to play it (before giving it to my son), and I was amazed. I literally enjoyed playing it more than my Martin... Why you ask (remember - I really liek my Martin)... likely becuase the action is just a wee bit lower even still than my Martin (which is quite low), and teh fretboard is slightly wider... These two things make the palyability just a little better and thus a real joy to play for hours on end. OK, so it does not have solid rosewood sides and back, and thus does not quite have teh bass of teh Martin, but it was very loud and also crsip, so nothing to comaplain about in the tone department. Again - I was very surprised how well this played and how much I liked it... If I had found this guitar while seraching a couple of years ago, I would have bought it over my Martin and saved some serious bank.
Nice LR Baggs pickup with "presence"... Also came with a really nice case. The finishing was very impressive as well.
Excellent quality out of the box... I usually have to "tweak" guitars to my liking... lower action, even smetimes file a fret or two... no this one.
For the money, I have never made a better guitar purchase - seriously.

Nice

By Ross Gunderson

Picked up this guitar a few weeks ago and it came super fast! Great guitar. I love the sound, and I've already gotten plenty complements on it already. It was a huge step up for me so I deffinitly saw a difference. Btw, it comes with a hardshell case and looks like the one one Breedlove's site, NOT like the one pictured here. At least the one I got in November 2011 was.

Amazing guitar for the price!

Ask me a question

I just picked up one of these guitars today, and I am already amazed by the quality and the workmanship put into this great guitar! It sounds better than some guitars that are well over three times the price! The look is incredible as well. Despite the state-of-the-art electronics, it has the look of a vintage guitar from

retro d/sm review

By cogswell

from The Motor City

All I can say is good things about my retro, I've owed it for about 8 months, it sounds great, full and robust strummed or with fingers, has a punchy and deep sound even with light strings, quality Korean workmanship, tight construction - no flaws to be found, finish is nice, good fret job, has strap button up top, element pup is nice, solid mahogany back, tortise binding, looks great, I like the satin neck, smooth and not sticky, neck profile is not chunky, more like a Taylor profile, easy to play, grover open backs tuners are a nice touch, solid axe all away around, the bridge is not finished and looks rather plain, that's the only thing I would change on this wonderful guitar, I just keep some oil on it so it stays dark and a little glossy, the gig bag is robust too, this guitar is a winner, highly recommended, great job breedlove

Wow!!! What a guitar!!!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This guitar is absolutely awesome! New Retro Series from Breedlove with Solid Sitka Spruce Top, Solid Mahogany Back and Laminate Mohogany Sides. I took it out of the case and strummed my first G Chord and ...WOW! Wonderful sound. Good sustain, great lows and the highs are impeccable. I'm really glad I went with this guitar instead of the Martin D15. The new Retro Series from BReedlove is going back to the prewar design of guitars. This is what a guitar is supposed to look like. The action is a little high out of the box but other than that, a great investment!
