The guitar itself is put together well. Plays well, and it's obviously a good looking guitar. It's a great guitar at the stupid deal price but the full price on these is just too high. It feels like a good guitar, not a what they charge at full price guitar. The one I received has bad electronics. The pickups cut out randomly, the input jack works, then doesn't work... the volume knob just stops working... Which okay I got a lemon, but Charvel's customer service isn't helpful. Overall... its a good guitar assuming it's working. This really would be better if it had a tone knob. That said I still like the thing. Just wish they'd answer warranty questions.

Comments about Charvel Desolation DX-1 ST Soloist Electric Guitar:

I've had several guitars over the past 30+ years and always insisted on brand name guitars made in US. But after trying this made-in-china bad boy out, I am totally blown away.

It's been close to a year that I've been looking for a more solid rock/metal guitar after trying out (and loving) an overseas-made lower-end model by a different company. It turned out for just a bit higher price, I ended up getting this real thing, which I think is at least a few notches above---in all aspects like the tone (amazing active combo PU's), material, appearance/weight, workmanship, action (absolute no buzz) playability! Just a perfect guitar, and probably the last, to add to my collection....sure to be my favorite for years to come.

I agree with most other reviews that retail price is too high. But considering the amount I payed at the "stupid deal" price, I have to give it a 5 star for the value. I can almost guarantee there's no better-made guitar for the money, regardless of where they are made.

Finally, there's no real downside to this guitar that I can think of. I highly recommend to anyone looking for either a main or a back-up rock/metal guitar at best value. Look no further and just get this baby!

Comments about Charvel Desolation DX-1 ST Soloist Electric Guitar:

This is a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of Fender and Charvel's misfortune and investment into a line of guitars that is now being discontinued. Most consumers would shy away from anything that is made in China when it comes to musical instruments, but this is actually an exception to the rule and I found this guitar to be fabulously well made as well asaesthetically pleasing to the eye. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of EMG pickups regardless of their high opinion held by many enthusiasts, but I just find passive pickups more pleasing to my ear and more versatile for my tastes. If all you play is Fear Factory or Devin Townsend covers than you'll most likely needn't do anything more to this guitar than set it up to your action taste. Fit and finish is terrific. I have an LTD Deluxe 1000 series, Korean made guitar with Seymour Duncan's in it and other than the pickups, I may like the feel of the Charvel's unfinished neck over the ESP, so until I inevitably put Duncan's in my trans red model I won't know which one I like better, and the ESP was way more expensive. I bought this on sale and couldn't be happier, to the point that if I'd paid full price I'd still be pleased! If it's any indication, I'm now hunting the remaining line down to modify and play regularly.I've already found another DX-1 ST in a trans blue finish that's already had Duncan Mayhem Distortions in it so yeah, these are great guitars! Grab one before they're a distant gear memory that Fender dumped tons of time and money into, only to throw them away,(Fender owns Charvel, for those who weren't aware)

Comments about Charvel Desolation DX-1 ST Soloist Electric Guitar:

The neck is great and has easy access all the way up to the far reaching frets, although I may get some really fine sandpaper for it to be super-smooth. It had a little fret buzz, but I figured it was from temperature changes. I just did a minor adjustment by turning the truss rod with the allen wrench provided and all has been mighty fine since. It has really low action. The tuning pegs stay in tune fairly well and they have a twist-lock that tightens the strings to the pegs, therefore no slippage of the strings. It sounds good too; sweet sustain. I will swap a Tony Iommi pickup (bridge) and a Burstbucker 2 in the neck. I would like to get a little more tonal range and will add a tone control and a push/pull knob for coil splitting. The EMGs are fine, but I'm just altering this because I have two axes with EMGs and Floyd Rose trems. Excellent rating (5 stars) because I got a great price to sweeten the deal. If I paid full retail price, I would probably rate "Good" or 4.5 stars

Comments about Charvel Desolation DX-1 ST Soloist Electric Guitar:

I have 3 other charvels so not new these,I have all neckthroughs, The first one I got had unfixable fret buzz on the Low e without distroying the nice action, the 2nd one had the same issue but the finish was wrecked allso. The third one was the charm, I had to raise the action a bit on the low e side to remove fret buzz, but not enough to ruin the action. The finish is perfect, the action is great.

the maple neck makes these guitars brighter then the all mahagany Charvels, loving this!

I did use 400 grit sand paper on the neck to smooth it better

Comments about Charvel Desolation DX-1 ST Soloist Electric Guitar:

Good guitar. Awesome neck, frets need some slight filing, they're a little rough. Nice weight, plays very easy. Volume goes from 1-5 nicely but from 6-10 is full blast (I'm assuming for the folks who like volume swells). It came shipping in two Charvel boxes free floating in a bigger box. Seeing this made me worry about the condition of the guitar but upon close inspection it is undamaged. No neck cracks anywhere, dings, scratches, cracks in the paint or body.

I also own an ESP/LTD MH350FR which is comparable to the Charvel. Both are very similar in spec-- the only difference being that the LTD has a Floyd Rose to which the Charvel does not. They sound really different. I've noticed the LTD has a warmer tone, almost Les Paul-ish (I own one of them too) and the Charvel doesn't. It does seem to sound a little clearer when distorted and not as influened by the wood (which, all physics aside, I think plays a factor). Both sound great in my opinion.

Is it worth the price? I got mine half off so, yeah it was worth it. Is it full price worth it? I would shop around of course but I'd definitely keep this in the top range of options.

Received the guitar and did a quick tune on it. The Trans black is beautiful and the guitar looks expensive. The neck is awesome and really thin. I own a 2014 PRS Custom 24, a U.S. Jackson SL2 and two Carvins and put this in the same class as far as playability and looks. It plays wonderful and feels so fast with that super thin neck. I play almost every genre of music and it sounds great doing it. While my other guitars are all real high end, this is the funnest one to play.

I'm normally an ibanez guy, but this was the stupid deal for half price so I couldn't pass it up. The neck is slightly thicker than a wizard neck especially more towards the headstock. The hardware is decent, the fit and finish though are a 9 out of 10, this thing really looks good in person. It plays fast and of course the emgs are awesome, if you are into active pickups. Overall I say it was a really nice guitar for the price on sale, but not anywhere near worth the retail price, might as well buy a made in Japan jackson soloist or ibanez prestige rg for a bit more money.

Comments about Charvel Desolation DX-1 ST Soloist Electric Guitar:

I got mine used, but got it in great shape. So for a used guitar in the shape it was in I loved the price. If I had to buy something in this Charvel series brand new I would of went with DS-1 FR instead. The feel of the neck is awesome, I love the fact that it has a simple 3 way Les Paul style pickup switch and 1 simple volume knob, a neck through design, the finish was a flame maple cherry sunburst which looks awesome, locking tuners that make restringing this guitar a lot easier and they're fairly responsive too and last a mahogany body with a maple neck that wasn't too heavy and well balanced when playing.

Here's a few drawbacks that I personally had. The way the neck through construction was done feels a little odd when reaching for the highest frets, but not to the point where they're not playable. I have a buddy that's going to level that area for me without damaging the body(he works on guitars for a living). The other drawback was I'm not the biggest fan of the EMG 81/85 set. Don't get me wrong they aren't bad pickups and a lot of people swear by them, but they aren't my sound. I do like the EMG 85, but only in the bridge, the EMG 81 sounds too thin and compressed for my taste and even in the neck position there are better choices in my opinion.

I wanted a guitar with a set tale piece so I could easily drop tune and I already had a set of Seymour Duncan AHB-3s so what I did was switch them from a guitar that already had a Floyd in it to this guitar and now the sound is perfect for drop tuning and what I was looking for. I took the EMG 85 and put it in bridge position on the other guitar and put a Seymour Duncan AHB-1N with a metal cover in the neck position(that I got on sale through MF :) ) and now that guitar sounds great for leads, rhythm, cleans and anything I do in standard tuning :).

The way I have it now is perfect, but I did have to make a few minor changes. A great guitar now.

I bought the flame maple top, it's gorgeous. This guitar is not as heavy as one might think. It's mahogany, but its light. Definitely not a one ton Pauly knock-off. The action is absoluetly incredible. No buzz at all on mine. The locking tuners are great. This is my first guitar with EMGs, and I like them, just not as much as the Seymour Duncans I've had before in the past. These pickups are great for metal, which I mostly play. I have thought about what it would be like to rip out the EMGs and put some Duncans in it, although I probably won't. Pinch harmonics are EASY. I like the simplicity of the controls: one volume, pickup selector switch. Nice!
