Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

I saw this guitar during one of the stupid deals and really liked the way it looked. It had the same basic shape as my jaguar but with nicer details. I remembered likely Charvel from my teenage years, but hadn't played one in forever. It was a good deal so I took a chance. I was so surprised by how much I loved this guitar. Its now one of my favorites. I was a little worried about only having a volume control and a pickup switch, but its like they found the perfect tone and then removed the knobs. It sounds great. I love the sound of the EMGs. I has a warm darker tone.I love the neck on this guitar. Not sure the type of wood or finish, but my hands just glide up and down the neck. It has the lowest action of any guitar I have ever played and I currently have 23 (mostly neck through body). I am thinking about picking up another one so I can have 2nd with a drop tunning. I really

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

This guitar was set up very low right out of the box just the way I like it. I had to fix the intonation on a couple of strings but that's normal. Very satisfied with it. Wish it wasn't Chinese but most things are nowadays.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

As others have stated - The EMG pickups have incredible tone, some of the very best I have played. The guitar has sustain for days, and that makes it a lot of fun to play. The controls are minimal, but a decent amp gives you all the control you should ever need to enjoy the guitar. I bought two on a "SDOTD" and they were a bargain at the sale price. A raging bargain... First one I unpacked had a great finish, but scuffs on the neck they didn't polish out and/or seal the finish. A little lemon oil and a rub, and it was good to play. The second had finish blems, and a really ugly sappy fret board with streaks in the finish. Musician's Friend sent me a replacement, and that one had a stripped input jack, but it was easy enough to replace it. Bottom Line: Quality control is iffy at best, but these are great guitars for the price you pay, and Musician's Friend customer service is the best there is.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

This is a nice guitar for metal. It has great sustain and good output from the EMG pick ups. It came set up right, and I had no issues with fret buzz. The guitar looks nice, and I have not seen any cosmetic flaws. I got the red color and the binding and inlays are more on the darker color and they do not contrast as much with color of the guitar.

The neck does not have paint or any significant finish. It feels like I finished smooth wood. The neck is not a big issue and it is comfortable.

The guitar screams for metal. It can drive a tube amp very well with EMG pick ups, but you can not tone down the screams because there is no tone control.

The guitar stays in tune very well. Overall it is a decent guitar for metal, I would recommend it at a lower price because at the current street price, you can find better guitars compared to this one.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

This is my third EMG guitar. I have Schecter Damien Avenger and PRS Paul Allender model. This one fits in between. PRS is more sophisticated, prettier, and more versatile but this Charvel has a better sustain. This is I believe due to both mahogany body and neck. The fretboard is rosewood in Desolation 1 models which is surely better than mahogany in DS2 model. The sustain is absolutely awesome. Make no mistake - this is a metal guitar, the sound is heavy but well defined as the EMG81/85 combination is expected to make since these are the very best metal humbuckers on the market (in my view better than SeyDuns).

Now the bad things - since the design is following van Hallen's Surfcaster if I am not mistaken they decided to skip the tone knob which is truly silly. Bindings are not exactly attractive either and the whole guitar has rather bland look (mine is flat black). Those are minor issues to me since the sound is the most important to me.

I dare to say that a metal player will not find better sounding guitar on the market but if you are looking for an instrument with flashy look then this is not it. I am also not a big fan of Floyd Rose and I prefer whammy setup in strats and PRS guitars but to be fair this is 35% cheaper than my PRS and has more sustain so I am keeping them both.
