Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

This is my third EMG guitar. I have Schecter Damien Avenger and PRS Paul Allender model. This one fits in between. PRS is more sophisticated, prettier, and more versatile but this Charvel has a better sustain. This is I believe due to both mahogany body and neck. The fretboard is rosewood in Desolation 1 models which is surely better than mahogany in DS2 model. The sustain is absolutely awesome. Make no mistake - this is a metal guitar, the sound is heavy but well defined as the EMG81/85 combination is expected to make since these are the very best metal humbuckers on the market (in my view better than SeyDuns).

Now the bad things - since the design is following van Hallen's Surfcaster if I am not mistaken they decided to skip the tone knob which is truly silly. Bindings are not exactly attractive either and the whole guitar has rather bland look (mine is flat black). Those are minor issues to me since the sound is the most important to me.

I dare to say that a metal player will not find better sounding guitar on the market but if you are looking for an instrument with flashy look then this is not it. I am also not a big fan of Floyd Rose and I prefer whammy setup in strats and PRS guitars but to be fair this is 35% cheaper than my PRS and has more sustain so I am keeping them both.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

This is a nice guitar for metal. It has great sustain and good output from the EMG pick ups. It came set up right, and I had no issues with fret buzz. The guitar looks nice, and I have not seen any cosmetic flaws. I got the red color and the binding and inlays are more on the darker color and they do not contrast as much with color of the guitar.

The neck does not have paint or any significant finish. It feels like I finished smooth wood. The neck is not a big issue and it is comfortable.

The guitar screams for metal. It can drive a tube amp very well with EMG pick ups, but you can not tone down the screams because there is no tone control.

The guitar stays in tune very well. Overall it is a decent guitar for metal, I would recommend it at a lower price because at the current street price, you can find better guitars compared to this one.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

This is a very good guitar I have had it for a few months now and it is the only guitar I use the pickups provide very nice sharp clean tones and cutting distorted metal tones. I use this guitar to record songs that I write and jam with friends. When I first received this guitar it was in great condition however there was a minor fret buzz issue on the second fret this issue was specific to my particular experience. Bottom line Can't find a better guitar for the price

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

I own a Charvel Surfcaster and when I saw a deal on this distant cousin, I had to get it.

The guitar looks incredible right out of the box. I did have to make a few minor adjustments: raised the bridge slightly to minimize fret buzz and some slight adjustments for intonation.

The guitar is bright and loud. The pick-ups can clean up but the EMGs are made to roar and that they do. The neck feel is interesting since it is oiled. It almost feels unfinished and strange on the first play, but over time it feels smoother and rather natural.

I know Charvel is discontinuing this (and similar) guitars, but if you can get your hands on one (and it is what you are looking for) I would recommend you do so.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar as a gift for my dad. It has some nice features- the neck is small similar to the Ibanez Wizard neck, the frets are pretty large, and it uses active pickups, which I figured wouldn't be too big of an issue.

Right out of the box, it needed a set-up. I set it up myself and got it playing better, and gave it to my dad shortly after that.

It has a compound radius fretboard, ranging from 10" near the nut and 16" towards the highest frets. I'm personally not a fan but I recommend playing it yourself to see what you prefer.

I play it from time to time, even though i'm a lefty. I think the active pickups are really best suited for metal or any other genre that uses a lot of gain. Because of the mahogany body and Tune-o-matic bridge It has a pronounced midrange acoustically, and it also has a pronounced midrange bump when played through an amp. I've since lowered the pickups slightly and it has helped.

Overall its a great guitar for the price (it was on sale) and provided that it is set up well and maintained regularly, it is an excellent deal for the beginner to intermediate player.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

I've wanted a Charvel Desolation for a year or two, so when this Skatecaster came up on SDOTD I didn't hesitate. I initially was considering the FR equipped DC-1 or DS-1, but the Skatecaster sounded so great on Rob Chapman's web review that I figured it was meant to be. The playability of the neck is fantastic. It's wide and thin in unfinished mahogany (that goes all the way through the body). Between the guitars tonewood sustain and the EMGs drive, it sounds fantastic. The body isn't the most attractive shape, sort of Jaguar-ish I guess, but it's comfortable to play even while sitting. The guitars finish is well done, and the abalone binding gives some class to it as well. The guitar STAYS in tune better than anything else I have that doesn't have a locking trem. I'd have been thrilled with the guitar even if I'd payed twice what I did. If you don't check Musician's Friend stupid deal of the day every day you are truly missing out. Don't be ummmm, stupid.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar on a whim, and after reading many reviews of it, I had mixed feelings about the guitar. I decided that once I got it, I would play around with it and either keep it or sell it. The day I got it, I plugged it in and played around for about 5 minutes. I almost tried to buy another one. I play primarily metal/hardcore (Anywhere from Slipknot to Veil Of Maya). This guitar fits that bill perfectly. It comes packed with EMG 81 and 85 pickups and is made of solid mahogany. The sound I got out of it was incredible. I have a Jackson SLATTXMG-6 Soloist with the same pickups. I compared them both side by side and found that the Charvel had a better tone and was a little more defined. (Now, my Jackson is still a great guitar, and is a little easier to play, but it wasn't too much of a difference). Overall, if you like metal/hardcore music and are looking for a reliable, easy to play guitar for recording, jamming, practicing, or gigging, then this is the guitar for you. I recommend that every guitarist who plays this genre have at least one Charvel in their line-up, specifically this model. 10/10, hands down.

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

I purchased the Charvel Desolation Skatecaster SK-1 on the Stupid Deal of the Day (they dang near gave it to me!) a couple of weeks ago not really knowing what to expect. This is my first Charvel and upon opening the box I was pleasantly surprised! None of the pics did the Blue Smear color justice.

Out of the box the setup needed a slight adjustment to remedy fret buzz. This is my first "active" pickup guitar and is a great guitar for metal or hard rock, however, it does lack clarity and crispness that I've been accustomed to with my LP's. It's not your best choice if you play a lot of clean rhythm guitar. It also has poor pickup at lower volume levels (apparently common with active pups). I will say that the more I've played it the more I like it!

The looks, quality, and workmanship is awesome on the Blue Smear. The Abalone "Keystone" position inlays and abalone body and headstock binding are very nice & detailed, the neck is thin & fast (much smaller than the LP's). The locking Charvel tuners keep it in tune very well and make string replacement a breeze. The oiled finished Mahogany neck is a different feel but easy to get used to. This guitar has a classy look and resembles the Fender Jaguar.

I would definitely recommend this guitar! Thank You MF for the S.D.O.T.D. sales!!!

It makes a nice addition to my collection with two LP's, 87' Ibanez RG440 Roadstar Series, Rogue (Stratocaster style), and a Takamine acoustic guitar.

I got this guitar during the stupid deal of the day. I'm so glad I pulled the trigger on that deal. Out of the box it looked amazing and felt solid when I picked it up. You don't need a tone knob for this guitar because the volume control gives you different tones when you turn it up and down. I've never had a set of EMG pick ups and I'm quite surprised on how versatile they are. I love the sound of mahogany. The neck is mahogany and so is the body. The neck is super fast and smooth. All in all this was a great buy! Buy one!

This guitar is a great purchase at the stupid deal price! This is my 2nd Skatecaster SK1 and overall I think it is incredible for the money. The unfinished neck is great. The paint and flame are awesome. The guitar sounds great with over-driven tones, and OK for cleans. Built quality is good for this price point. I recommend this for anyone wanting a cool-looking and great sounding rock guitar!

Comments about Charvel Desolation Skatecaster 1 Electric Guitar:

This guitar was a stupid deal of the day for two hundred clams. It is a deal at thrice the price. Hard to believe they can build a guitar with these specs at that price. Neck-through construction, all mahogany body and neck, EMG 81/85 pickups, locking tuners, fully bound neck and body top and abalone inlays over the translucent finish are very high quality and well constructed. Not USA-made quality wood, but good enough for nearly LP sustain and low end. Interestingly, with the 25.5" scale length it still has a little Strat snappiness and responds well to drop tunings. The tone from the EMGs is as expected, even a little hotter without a tone knob, which I don't use much even when it is there. The neck is Ibanez Wizard thin and the body is Tele like in having no belly scarf nor arm contour. The tone is hot, warm and yet biting due to the EMG and mahogany combination. At this price it was a steal and is 75% of a LP and was at 10% of the price of one. That, my fellow players is some good math.

I saw this guitar during one of the stupid deals and really liked the way it looked. It had the same basic shape as my jaguar but with nicer details. I remembered likely Charvel from my teenage years, but hadn't played one in forever. It was a good deal so I took a chance. I was so surprised by how much I loved this guitar. Its now one of my favorites. I was a little worried about only having a volume control and a pickup switch, but its like they found the perfect tone and then removed the knobs. It sounds great. I love the sound of the EMGs. I has a warm darker tone.I love the neck on this guitar. Not sure the type of wood or finish, but my hands just glide up and down the neck. It has the lowest action of any guitar I have ever played and I currently have 23 (mostly neck through body). I am thinking about picking up another one so I can have 2nd with a drop tunning. I really

This guitar was set up very low right out of the box just the way I like it. I had to fix the intonation on a couple of strings but that's normal. Very satisfied with it. Wish it wasn't Chinese but most things are nowadays.

As others have stated - The EMG pickups have incredible tone, some of the very best I have played. The guitar has sustain for days, and that makes it a lot of fun to play. The controls are minimal, but a decent amp gives you all the control you should ever need to enjoy the guitar. I bought two on a "SDOTD" and they were a bargain at the sale price. A raging bargain... First one I unpacked had a great finish, but scuffs on the neck they didn't polish out and/or seal the finish. A little lemon oil and a rub, and it was good to play. The second had finish blems, and a really ugly sappy fret board with streaks in the finish. Musician's Friend sent me a replacement, and that one had a stripped input jack, but it was easy enough to replace it. Bottom Line: Quality control is iffy at best, but these are great guitars for the price you pay, and Musician's Friend customer service is the best there is.
