OVERVIEW

A reissue of a classic instrument from the early days of rock.

The 12-String Danelectro 12SDC Electric Guitar captures the jangly sounds of the '60s with a double-cutaway body made of laminated wood and 2 lipstick pickups. Modeled after the classic 59DC used by Jimmy Page, the guitar's "bottle" headstock is elongated to accommodate 12 sealed Gotoh tuners. It's wide neck makes the Danelectro 12 string easy to play. An improved fixed bridge is fully adjustable. The Danelectro 12SDC guitar's '59 vintage look includes details like a matte finish, seal-shaped pickguard, and textured tape binding on the sides.

Case sold separately.

This Danelectro 12 string is Korean made and appears to be put together well. Individual string saddles make it possible to intonate the strings, though out of the box, mine needed very little adjustment. The lipstick tube style pickups deliver the jangle you expect from an electric 12 string and they seem to be fairly high gain. I had to turn my Gretsch Playboy amp down a little from the setting I normally run it in order to turn the guitar volume up just a third of the way. These pickups are loud. I really like the wide neck. It's much easier to play than the Rickenbacker 12 string I used to have. I also like the simplicity of one tone knob and one volume knob. Danelectro guitars of the 50's/60's were cheaply made masonite wonders with lipstick tubes as pickup covers, unique tone and a low price. Thankfully, some things don't change. Plug this in and the jingle-jangle will lead you right into the sonic realms of The Byrds and The Beatles.

The guitar wouldn't tune well right out of the box, but it came with Gotoh tuners and a nicely designed bridge which allows one to intonate all 12 strings individually, so I figured that this is something that I should be able to make work for me. I gave it to my guitar tech/lutihier who had to shim the neck, turn the truss rod, adjust the action and intonation, change strings and cut grooves deeper in the nut for the strings that sat too high and put epoxy in grooves that were too low. When I got it back it was much better than when I gave it to him but the G string still needs a litttle more frequent tuning than would be needed with my Fenders or Gibsons. He told me that there are internet blogs that say that you should throw away the aluminum nut that comes with it and go to a bone or synthetic one. We ended up not doing that.

One other issue I had was that the tone knob did absolutely nothing so I took off the pickguard and saw that a wire that was supposed to be soldered to a tab on the pot was never soldered.

I feel that I got something that I can use as often as I would use a 12 string, which is not often. You do get what you pay for and the fact is, I didn't pay much for it. Thank God that I have the resouces I do to make the instrument right. For what I have invested in it, I'd say I did alright. A PRS 12 is as adjustable; they have a bridge that allows intonation on all strings as does this Dano but PRS's cost thousands of dollars. Rickenbackers cost a couple grand plus and I am told that you cannot intonate all 12 strings on them (I never owned one so I'm not sure). I recommed this Danelectro with a caution that you should try to findout how much a good setup would cost and figure that into the total price. An extra hundred or so dollars for the set up and $70 or so for a good case still makes this a decent deal. Just know all this before going into it.
Needed major set up and soldering of the tone pot. Darn thing is made in China, so what do you expect? That's what you get for the low, low price. Low, low quality.
Good value but expect to spend more to make it right after you buy it.

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

I used to have a Gibson EDS1275 doubleneck and loved it. But as I got older it was just too heavy to play for an extended period of time. So, I sold it.

That was a few years ago and since then there have been times that I needed a 12 string. After looking around I decided that 2k for 2 maybe 3 songs per gig was too much to spend. Last week I noticed this Danelectro on sale at Musician's Friend. There were 61 reviews, all glowing. So I decided that it was worth a gamble and ordered it. It only took 4 days to get here. From the moment I played the intro to "Listen To Her Heart," I fell in love with this guitar. The action's MUCH better than my old Gibby. And the intonation was perfect all the way up the neck. Even that pesky "G" string was in tune. The reason, separate adjustable bridge pieces for each individual string. I don't know of any other manufacturer that offers this innovation.

If you need 12 string jangle, but don't have a lot of jingle, this is the one. Tom Petty, he's in there. The Beatles, oh yeah. The Byrds, gotcha covered.

For the price, you can't really beat that kind of value for a great sounding 12-string. The Dano lipstick pickups sound great and have that classic Dano glassy tube-y sound. The metal nut and bridge do a great job of keeping it in tune for such a cheap guitar, seriously, great. Mine arrived setup perfectly, which I was pretty shocked at, as a pricier Gibson often needs one.

            A great guitar!

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

So, I own a Rickenbacker 360 and wanted the 12 string. I have very large hands which already were an issue with the 6. I found the 12 very difficult to play. I also imagined the nightmare and cut fingers from changing the strings. Combined with the fact that I already own one Rick... The Rick was out.

So, I already use a Dano DC for slide.... I knew I liked them, I thought I'd give the Dano 12 a try and was instantly pleased. Unlike my DC it played good all the way up the neck. I just bought it.... And had to return it two weeks later because my wife bought me the prettier black one two weeks later for Christmas.

Now, with the black one, there was no fooling around. I had it professionally tweaked before I even saw it, and had super slinky 8s put on it (keep plenty of 8s on hand, I had one come unwound right out of the case...

The 12 had a glossy black finish and I didn't get splinters off the fingerboard, the frets were not like railroad tracks....in short it was everything my DC isn't...

Now for the fun part. I plugged it into my AC 30 with a Keeley compressor... And it sounds more like a toaster pick up Rick than a modern Ric! I mean really jingle jangle jiggly....

I love this guitar, I gave it four stars because I'm not a fanboy. it is not a Rickenbacker and it is built very cheaply. But with a pro setup it plays and sounds stunning.

We were out of town so I had it shipped to The Guitar Factory,in Orlando,to tweak and setup before we got back to the states. Bill said they put on the strings that I asked for,no problems. It plays very well and rings out even unplugged. I had enjoyed watching Andy White play one of these with Tonstartssbandht and Mac DeMarco. I just had to get one.

Played acoustic 12 string for many years and wanted to add the unique sound to my electric collection. Dismayed at the high cost of a Ric, I decided to try this low-cost electric 12. Didn't expect too much but was surprised at the really nice sound of this instrument.
It is certainly not in the same class as a Ric, but it does provide a lot of fun blending a great sound into classic tunes.

Comments about Danelectro 12SDC 12-String Electric Guitar:

I had played a similar model in a music store & was delighted that the deal I got through Musicians Friend saved me so much money. When the guitar arrived I was pleased with the craftsmanship upon inspection & immediately realized I would need to lower the action, then checked intonation - which was way off. But once this was done the guitar had a great feel. The wide neck is a real bonus in this case which facilitates ease of fingering. Now it was time to plug it in. Two pickups & 3 way toggle provide mellow to cutting belltones. I had to lower the neck PU to even out the balance. My only gripe is the taper of the volume pot - it goes from zero to full on - no gradual volume increase so that will be my first change - a better volume pot. That's it - other than that it is now one of the most fun guitars you'll ever play. I'm happy with the purchase.
