OVERVIEW

A solid dreadnought with plenty of color, both in tone and appointments.

The brand new Brooklyn (SD-400) has a voice all its own. Its rich, dreadnought shout is propelled by a sapele back, sides, and a solid Sitka spruce top. The Brooklyn's mahogany neck is capped with a rosewood fingerboard where block mother-of-pearl inlays add the class of a fresh pair of wingtips. Brass bridge pins help the Brooklyn sing, providing maximum resonance. Along with the rest of the D'Angelico acoustic family, the Brooklyn is amp-ready with the Fishman INK-4 onboard preamp and pickup system, complete with built-in tuner.

I have lusted in wanting a D'Angelico. No kiddin'! I played one of their archtops once and fell in lust. The price tag was a major barrier and I really liked a flat top better than an archtop for my musical style. When I saw the SD400 in the Stupid Deal of the Day, I saw my chance and snagged one. Out the box the set-up was perfect. The sound was WAY different than what I expected having a much brighter sound than either of my Guilds. This thing is built like a tank! After scrutinizing it closely, I can find nothing I don't like about it. The Fishman INK-4 system works great. My ONLY niggle is that it would have been nice to know how to open the battery door... or even where it was! Yeah... it's a definite keeper!

First let me say that I would never have even considered buying this guitar at regular retail but when I saw that Musicians Friend reduced the price drastically, I thought I would give it a shot. Also the website states that these are made in S. Korea but the sticker on the guitar states that they are made in Indonesia. For a mid level acoustic guitar I think they are a decent guitar especially with the solid wood top, back and sides and also with the MOP block inlays on the neck. The Fishman preamp worked well and definitely was a plus. The fit and finish were all fine and the case was nice but the guitar needed to be set up as the action was fairly high. I do my own guitar work and after spending about an hour and a half adjusting the neck and working on the bridge height I was able to bring the action down to a respectable level and it now plays well. But with all of that said, again I would not buy this guitar at full retail but at the greatly reduced price they are now offering them for it was worth a shot - just expect to do some set-up work to make playable. Bottom line - good guitar for the reduced price. At full retail not so much.

Comments about D'Angelico Brooklyn Dreadnought Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

A truly excellent guitar - at a fantastic price in MF open box sale. First, I did have to adjust the string action. It came superlow - lower than nearly any electric guitar I've played. While that is amazing on an acoustic guitar, it had a little buzz on frets 1 & 2 when I dug in. So I had to shim-up the bone bridge with a piece of credit card. It's still low action, but absolutely no buzz. Second, otherwise this guitar is amazing from top to bottom. The stairstep Gover tuners work and look great. I always thought the oversized D'Angelico designed headstock added sustain - and it does. The rosewood fingerboard is extra quality with fewer pores, beautiful inlays, just the right meatiness, and the jumbo frets are nicely polished top & ends. The dreadnought body design is easy to hold, yet gives me that low boom when I dig-in, like a jumbo. The woods seem nicely selected, but the grey & black finish on mine was as transparent as some photos, so it's hard to see. The sapele, or African mahogany, on the back and sides seems more resonant than the mahogany on other brands. I found the Fishman pickup easy to use and easy to adjust through large auditorium-size PA systems or my little acoustic amp. The tuner seems more sensitive and is easier to read than most. Third, the case is one of the best hardshells. Overall, an excellent guitar that is beautiful yet durable, great sounding acoustically and through the Fishman pickup, and useful in a wide variety of gigs. The nice action makes it easy to get through the longest of gigs, too!

Comments about D'Angelico Brooklyn Dreadnought Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a well made instrument. I own the Brooklyn, two Bowerys, a Lexington , a Mercer and a Grammercy on back order. These guitars are all solid wood, good electronics, high finish with great binding , brass pins, a special head stock and they come in a case at the same price as most other guitar companies sell their case less solid tops. These guitars have needed no set up and only the back order is a new instrument the others have been level 1 and level 2 open box models.
I did send back a level three bowrey because the repair was cost more than ordering a new guitar.
These are great solid wood guitars if you want something with better quality then Taylor , better looks than Martin and better sound than Takamines and Ibanez.

Comments about D'Angelico Brooklyn Dreadnought Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for a week and have no complaints about the guitar. Just the fact that it is already a discontinued guitar after one year of production leaves me to wonder how long this new company wiil be around. I will be returning it for a more reputable make just in case I need customer service down the road. D'angelico doesn't even take phone calls.
