The Dean ML Modifier 8-String Electric Guitar is ready to accompany you into the realm of some very deep tones. With 2 extra strings covering F# and B below a standard 6-string's lowest string you'll be able to thicken up your sound substantially. To make it easier to cover all that ground, the ML Modifier 8-String has a set neck with a comfortable, slim "D" shape and an extra-smooth ebony fingerboard. Specially designed EMG 808 pickups respond evenly to the full range of frequencies that this 8-string produces while the tune-o-matic bridge permits perfect intonation across the whole frequency spectrum. Black hardware and a classic black finish complement the impressive look of this tonal behemoth.
EMG 808
Before this model was introduced, existing 8-string pickups sounded muddy and dull on the low B string, especially when trying to hit artificial and natural harmonics, but the 808 eliminates all those problems. Featuring Alnico V loaded wide aperture coils we were able to beef up that Low B tone and at the same time provide a more responsive super tight overall sound. Whether you are ringing out Opeth-style jazzy chords or playing palm muted death chugs, even with the amp set to “kill”, these pickups will articulate every note, harmonic and squeal you ask of them. Used equally in bridge and neck positions, these pickups will forever change how you hear and play your 8-string.

Without wanting to break the bank or end up with a guitar that would need modification out of the box I stumbled across the Dean ML 8. This is my jump into the world of 8 string guitar. I own too many guitars across too many platforms to list but I wanted the 8 stringer for Metal. I have never been a fan of the ML shape in the past but with the added scale length and the wide neck it finally looks in proportion to me. And this thing just screams Metal.
In this price range I found that with all other brands I was giving up something on my prefered wish list for this specific design. I wanted the instrument to be tight from end to end. Many other 8 strings look wonky at some point or another but this dean has grover tuners to keep thing solid up top. A well cut nut that actually is sloped properly to handle those beefy low strings yet keep the tops very playable. I originaly was a bit worried the string angle of the nut might be problematic but it is absolutely stable. The neck is set and it is a mahogany neck/body design which I feel adds growl. The bridge is a tune-o-matic into a string through body for solid stability.
The neck is made of ebony to keep things articulate and I personaly find the EMG pickups to be an asset to this guitars sound. I know there many 8 stringers that say passive only but I have no problems churning out crisp tones without being harsh or brash.
I assumed that playing an 8 stringer would be difficult and take time to get used to but I was wrong. I do not know if this one is easier to play or I made a monster out of it in my mind but the Dean plays very smoothly. It needed very minor adjustments out of the box but I have never bought a guitar that I have not taken the time to set up to preference. The action is decent across the whole board and the 26.5 scale actually makes those 24th fret notes easy to finger. The scale is actually very comfortable to me, I normally prefer a 25.5 guitar scale and a 34 bass scale.
You will need to get the hard shell ML case for guitar and bass to keep it in, at least that is what Dean told me on inquiry. I am very satisfied with this instrument and I am also impressed with the level of quality controll Dean has in place in their Korean facility. Hats off to Musician's Friend for delivering the goods and as always refusing to be undersold or out done. They have become my go to supplier over the past few years and I hope the relationship continues as is.

playes great out of the box. if you play hard, you mayneed to raise the action on the f# due to the size of the string.every not is clean and tight.the 808 aninco 5's are deep and clean at the same time, no mud. string spacing is tight, but crazy fast to sweep the neck. [*] will love the neck.
