Overall I would say this is an excellent guitar for guys who like to hot rod their axes, it plays exceptionally well for the price it has a great neck and sweet Grover tuners on that awesome Dean V headstock, once hot rodded it will easily hang with the big boys! Great guitar for entry level provided that the purchaser can or knows someone who can perform some basic luthier work. I am basing this on the two Dean guitars that I own and also on other reviews here listing problems with wiring and electronics, once I loaded mine with new pots, switch and pickups (all for around $150) it plays like a $700 or $800 dollar axe and a has a killer vintage look, I highly reccomend this axe for the price!
Having some credit @ a local music store I picked up a Dean VX Brazilian Burst for my son for $200. After about six months of collecting dust and him showing no interest it became mine. I liked the guitar because it played well (like a much more expensive instrument) and had a great vintage look with the cream and black zebra humbuckers and chrome hardware. It had a very fasy and playable neck and the Grover tuners speak for themselves.
Physically the neck, body and hardware are above average for and entry level priced instrument, playability exceeded my expectations. The electronics however are a different story, start with the pickups they look great, but their sound is what is to be expected from stock pickups on a guitar of this price range, The switch was bad from the factory, playing one pickup or the other, but not both from the center position, I checked the wiring, no bad solder joints just a defective switch, ironically I had this exact problem with my Dean Dime DB Razorback. I put in DiMarzio 500K custom taper pots, and a new mechanical toggle switch, and loaded it with a pair of Wilde Bill's L500 Twin Blade pickups, For a finishing touch I put some black speed knobs that "Go To Eleven" Now this axe plays and sounds as good as my more expensive guitars and I was even able to order the L500's in black and cream zebra coils to retain the killer vintage look!
Despite the electronics issues I feel this guitar is an excellent value for the money, especially for someone who doesn't have the cash to pay for USA Custom Shop guitars and likes to hot rod their axes. Typically I purchase midrange guitars $400-$600 and then upgrade the pots and pickups so this was perfect. It plays as well as my Jackson King V and my B.C.Rich Kerry King Beast V, even if it didn't sound as good out of the box.

I shouldn't have bought this guitar. Sure, it looks nice but is horrible to play. The action goes bad fast, so you have to adjust the Truss Rod, Which if yours is like mine, won't work. I had to lower the bridge, and now there's fret buzz (and the 22 frets are noiseless). The Pickups are horrible. They give out a muddy distortion, with tons of static sound. The Clean isn't that good either. The only good Things are the grover tuners. I only recomend this guitar to a player who isn't serious about playing. If you want a similar guitar in this price range buy an epiphone flying V. They have a much higher quality throughout. This guitar lasted me for about 4 months before a manditory upgrade (Gibson Sg with P-90 Pickups which i highly recommend). Don't Buy this guitar.

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

Ive been playing guitar for well over 7 years and i know a good guitar when i play one and this one is an excellent inexpencive guitar that wont brake your wallet. ive been looking for a cheap guitar that i could jam and play shows with and pretty much beat the hell out of to try and save my fender strat. i picked this up at my local guitar shop and started playing it and was amazed by the feel and tone. i had just got paid and bought this on instinct and i dont regret it at all, i cant set this thing down for a minute. the pick ups are not my cup of tea though so i will be replacing them with dimarzio crunch lab and liquifier further along the line. also mines didnt come with grover tuners but i had an extra set laying around so i screwed them on and this thing plays like a champ. you can not go wrong with this guita.

Great find at a solid price

By Ben Plesser

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

This was my first guitar that I ever bet. Sol, as I named him, has served me well for a while. There was a period when I put him down for a prolonged time because of a faulty input which coincidentally coincided with the purchase of a different guitar. Honestly though, I think that with the revamped electronics I prefer this baby to my $700 Epiphone. Great value, great instrument. Love this baby and intend to rock it out for many more years to come.
The key feature here is definately the maple neck. Its cut perfectly and is so smooth that your hands almost glide as you play this baby.
Everything on this guitar is top notch except the electronics. I had some trouble with the input and the pickups were what you would expect on a standard store bought guitar (iffy at best). We replaced the electronics with an EMG active pickup and since then this baby has been killer.
The value here is top notch. With a little work this can be a great instrument for any guitarist of any level.

Great Backup or practice Axe!

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

Ive had my "Dean VX" for over 2 years now and I just wanted to let all my fellow players know that it has held up VERY well,I bought a "Dean VX" Because I needed an Axe to grab when I was headed out to a buddy's house for a jam session, road tripping or basically any situation where I did not want to use My Mid to Higher end Guitars,In other words a pure "Beater Axe",But the "VX" really stole my heart and pretty much blew me away for being such an Inexpensive, more or less "Entry level axe" it plays very well, sounds gr8,and quite honestly is a much better guitar then a lot of axes costing 2-3 times as much,I know there are a lot of players who might be a bit Leary of buying such an Inexpensive Axe, thinking it probably is a piece of garbage that sounds Crappy, wont stay in tune, and plays like a telephone pole, but this is simply NOT the case, the "Dean VX" is a really Decent all around guitar for the Money.

Nice guitar for anyone

By ThexSlainx

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

I got this same guitar in a shop near where I live. I got it cause I was tight on money and wanted a nice guitar. This one caught my eye and so I took my chances. I love this guitar, it's a good weight, got a comfortable neck and good tone. Only issue I had was the jack input got shorted out but that was easily replaceable. Also one day I dropped it when my strap came loose and to my surprise it was just fine. Nothing broke, nothing chipped, it just got a little out of tune.If you want a good guitar for a good price, I'd suggest get this one, of course not the best but get it and make your own changes and it can be your favorite!

Better Than Expected

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

I recieved the Dean VX a few years back for Christmas as a more affordable option, rather than a Gibson. For the price this guitar is a steal. The neck has plenty of breathing room and access to the higher frets, and the tuners are perfect. The playability of this guitar is even preferred by me over guitars worth $800+. However, the pickups are a bit weak and the factory strings are garbage, but this can be easily fixed. Overall the reliablility is great, considering the daily abuse it takes at band practices. My strap broke before a show last year, causing me to drop it backstage on the floor. I was surprised nothing broke; this is a well-made guitar. For a small budget guitar look no further.

I've had one for 2 years

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

Absolutely nothing wrong with it to date. It's a cheap guitar, so is anything in it's price range, but it plays very well. Decently fast neck. Every guitar needs Grover tuners so that's a plus. Access to the higher frets is limited due to bolt-on construction. If you don't have much to spend and need something to last you a while, this is it. Dean makes an excellent guitar.

Better than a Gibson!

By Blaze-V2pI6

from Pt. charlotte, FL

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

I've played Gibson Flying V guitars before and they never really agreed with me right away, but the Dean V-X is way better than a Gibson in many ways. It's lighter, the price is obviously more reasonable, and it has better color options. I own the braziliaburst model I bought in the Ft. Myers Guitar Center. It currently sports Dunlop Zakk Wylde 10-60 gauge strings. It needs a new neck pickup, so I will be getting the Hands Without Shadows humbucker for the neck. It plays like a dream, and it feels just like a Gibson without the heavy neck/body ratio, price, and pickguard. I would recommend this guitar to any metal guitarists any day.

Better than a Gibson!

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

I've played Gibson V guitars and they never really gave me the rush I needed until I picked up the Dean V-X. I bought the Braziliaburst model in Guitar Center about a year ago and it was one of the few guitars that actually agreed with me when I first plugged it in to the amp and started playing it. Mine currently still has it's stock zebra humbuckers. The neck pickup tends to fade every now and then so I'm getting a hands without shadows pickup for the neck. it also has the dunlop Zakk Wylde 60 gauge strings on it right now. This guitar is extremely comfortable and light, and it's good to start out with if you can't afford a Gibson V.
