This is a well built instrument and sounds like a dream. My only con listed is the fact that they allowed certain blemishes to pass QC. I ordered from MF and have considered returning due to these minor blemishes in the finish. Other than that, this thing sounds and plays great. I have searched/read many comments about the correct case for the Swingster and steeed away from the Joe Pass case beause of the comments here. I own an AJ200S and bought a Road Runner case @ GC at the time of purchase - very snug fit for the AJ. The Swingster also fits pretty well in this case. I bought the Epi AJ case after the fact from MF after reading it might be a good match for the Swingster and figured if it did not work, the AJ would fit instead. That is exactly how it turned out. The Swingster had a more secure fit in the Road Runner case. Sorry for those interested but I do not know the model of the RR case. I have included pics of the fitment in each case.

Beware the Transparent Black Finish! Another reviewer posted that the top actually appears green, and this is not unique. The light black stain lets the laminated wood of the sides, back, and neck show through. The sides, back, and neck do appear black-ish. The headstock is painted black on the front, and so is a different black than the neck, back, and sides. However, the top appears green unless viewed from an angle or in shadows. It is not unattractive, but I wanted a black guitar. Epiohone would have done so much better to just paint the thing black like the headstock front, instead of the transparent black finish on top of the spruce top creating a green finish. Since I did not also get an amazing, "I don't care about the appearance" tone out of the guitar, I returned it.

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

PROS: drop-dead gorgeous piece of work from the vibrant orange paint to the headstock - everyone comments on it; audience and fellow musicians alike - they love it. The humbucker warmth and power is better than any Gibson Les Paul I've played on. I can't get over the tone of these pickups. The single coils (push/pull tone knobs) are OK, but don't expect a Strat. It holds the tuning beautifully - the Grover machine heads are first class. The Bigsby "wire" tremolo/whammy bar is really cool and the end of it fits in the pocket of my hand for great control. Great fingerboard, neck, and action. My guitar came set up in absolutely perfect shape. The Epiphone luthiers know what they're doing. I was immediately impressed.

CONS: change the strings - they're awful. The "Rhythm/Treble" toggle switch isn't great... it emits a lot of static when I have to switch between the three modes, and this is pretty annoying (hence only the 4 stars).

For the price I paid for this guitar, I cannot believe I could find a better one designed to do EVERYTHING! Though I still prefer my high-end single coil guitars, this Swingster is better than any of the much more expensive Gibson's I own or have tried out. I can play anything on this guitar - hard rock, blues (my main reason for loving it so much), jazz, rockabilly... it's just a great all-'round guitar with an emphasis on Blues. As a side note, of all my guitars, only this one is able to produce the Jimmy Page Les Paul humbucker brilliance of the Led Zeppelin era, and the Peter Green tone he achieved during his tenure with John Mayall. What a bonus...

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This is a great guitar for the price. If you are expecting a Gretsch, look elsewhere. If you are searching for a D'Angelico, save your money. If you are looking for a good hollowbody that will not destroy the bank account and add versatility to your studio, this is a great selection. The tones range from thick and bass-centric to thin and treble crazy. My two gripes are the flimsy pots and the noisy pickups. The pickups do not have a noisy signal but they feed back easily and have a strange reverberation issue caused by the metal casing on each humbucker. With a few modifications and a good setup, this guitar can be made into something great. At the price, its a great addition to a studio collection and will offer a lot for a low admission rate.

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Great looks, good pick ups, plays a variety of music.

Had to set up the guitar to my liking but it was no problem. Neck needed adjusting and I lowered tail piece. Once this was done it plays great, however I did have a dead spot on the B string when playing at the 14 fret. The problem was the 16th fret was not set in the neck fully so it was deadening the string. Gently tapped the fret down and this caused a domino effect. So I ended up having to tap several frets down, but worked out and no problems now. So you may have a few things to work out on this guitar. If you are experienced you will have no problems making the adjustments and it is well worth it.

I love the bigsby wire tremelo. This guitar does everything I ask it to and more. I own a Epi Les Paul Tribute, PRS Custom 24 and the Swingster holds its own. Adds a whole new range to my playing and compliments our band tremendously.

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar from MF as a return. After close examination I finally found some very tiny pick marks. The finish of this guitar was very good. The binding was perfect. The fit was flawless. Overall I was very pleased.
My biggest and best surprise was that the intonation was perfect. After restringing and lowering the action, this is one of the easiest playing guitars that I own. Another surprise was that the open chord "dischord" does not exist on this instrument. I own several Gibsons, Fenders, and a Gretch, and this guitar equals all of them in appearance. It has become my favorite guitar.

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

The swingster is a great guitar, in the right context. Being a fully hollow guitar, the feedback is horrendous with even a touch of gain at high volume. It is a great jazz guitar though, and that is mainly what I play on it. I will use it for recording rock or blues at low volume, because when you have a dirty or overdriven sound for rock or blues, this guitar sounds great, but you just can't go play a loud rock gig unless you want to battle the feedback. It plays wonderfully and the wine color is beautiful. The bigsby is fun to mess with as well. Stays in tune relatively well.

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

After the amazement I recieved from the purchase of an Epi Riviera P93 from Musicians Friend a little over a year ago, I set my sites on a full hollowbody . Even though I had full confidence in getting the Emperor in same fashion,I still played what was available from Gretcsh,Ibanez, and schecter to make sure my judgement was sound.I was not let down.

The guitar I purchased was a used return from Musicians friend. The previous purchaser had the stock strings taken off and 9-42's installed. The guitar sounded thin and unresponsive. I know that accoustics and full hollow body guitars perform best with thicker strings so I immediately put 11-49 D'addarios tuned to Eb on it.After the string install,I did a full set up with the string height at .060" at the 20th fret. There were NO buzzes to be heard! I then plugged it into my 1966 fender princeton reverb (not a reissue!) and set the pick up height to balance the volume between bottom and top strings. What I heard was absolutely amazing. Once everything was adjusted propperly this guitar sounded, reacted, and played like a guitar 6 times its price! I then plugged it into a modded line 6 vetta 2 modeling amp and went through a gamut of presets. This guitar ran every style of music, except modern detuned heavy metal, with ease!

Being a luthier, I am a stickler for detail. The top end Epiphones are absolutely amazing in their build quality. The binding/inlay work is flawless and the gloss trans wine red paint is richly deep in appearance but not like most guitar finishes that are so thick that it chokes the tone. The new electronics design is a major plus that other hollowbody guitars under $2k simply do not have out of the box. The tuners-bigsby-roller bridge combo is tight and precise - after string break in it was hard pressed to go out of tune even after several hours of play. This guitar is a true testament to the days of when Epiphone was still an independant company and the "House of Stathapoulo" would be proud!

Hats off to Epiphone for a great bang for buck product and to Musicians Friend for great service!

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This is a very nice guitar for the price. I am mostly a strat/lp rock and heavy blues player and I wanted something different to get me into that jazz and rock-O-billy vibe. This baby gets the job done! It is an acoustic and electric all in one package and it looks so cool! It keeps my fingers "honest"...fret hand and picking hand. The neck is super smooth after some break in time and the sounds from the pick ups are very nice and articulate. Love the push pull options. So many tones are available with this set up. I even run it through my Mini Recto on clean channel or the overdrive channel and this thing kicks it! Got to be careful though cause it will feedback like crazy at too high of a volume in front of the amp. Only problem is the roller saddle/bridge..if you get too aggressive with picking the strings will sometimes pop out of the saddle. I have learned to dial back my picking attack and that helps..but sometimes I really wanna bang the strings so I will have to maybe get a standard non roller bridge and give that a try. I don't use the trem that much anyway. Otherwise...Killer Guitar. Almost my fave now!

This is my second Swingster. Both are beautiful instruments! I have had this guitar for about 3 days now. It was set up and ready to play. It was just a little out of tune. I play fingerstyle ( Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Mark Knoffler)and to me this is what I have been looking for. I don't think I could have done better.

Would be good for the Atkins picker too.

Beautiful workmanship and finish. This guitar has so many different sounds with the semi-hollow body. The tremelo is easy (soft touch) and very fun to use. I like the angle of the tremolo bar instead of a straight bar. It is much easier to use when playing riffs and chording. I got the orange color and it surely rocks. The binding and finish is perfect and the tuners hold the tune very very even when using the Bigsby. The inlaid MOP on the headstock is absolutely breath-taking!
