OVERVIEW

Classic shape and tone in reduced size.

Epiphone's Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO is a modern guitar with roots firmly planted in Epiphone's classic era when Epi's famed Kalamazoo factory produced rock's most legendary instruments in the late '50s and '60s. Featuring a reduced-size ES-style body and Epiphone's new P-90R PRO "soapbar" pickups, the ES-339 P-90 PRO semi-hollowbody turns back the clock while breaking new ground in sound and style. Case sold separately.

A Legend Reborn
First introduced in the late '50s, the original ES Series became an instant rock classic that brought the feel and look of an archtop to a generation of players who had grown up playing solid body guitars like the Les Paul. But for some, ES-style archtops felt too bulky to play on stage or in the studio. Now, the ES-339 P-90 PRO is the perfect remedy featuring smaller body dimensions while still retaining the bell-like tone the ES Series is famous for. And, just like Epi's nouveau classic ProBucker humbuckers, the P-90 PRO "soapbar" pickups are a stunning recreation of the first generation of handwound P-90s which many consider the best single-coil pickup ever made.

Solid Epiphone Construction
The Epiphone Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features a reduce-size laminated maple body with a solid center block like original ES-style classics and a black pickguard with metal "E" insignia. The mahogany SlimTaper "D" profile 24.75" scale neck has 22 medium-jumbo frets and is hand-set and glued with a mortise and tenon neck joint with Titebond glue. The 12" radius neck features a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays and a 1.68" nut. Single-ply cream binding on the fingerboard and body completes the classic look.

Introducing the new Epiphone P-90R PRO
The Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features Epiphone's P-90R PRO "soapbar" pickup, a true recreation of the first generation of P-90 pickups found in Les Pauls. Epiphone P-90R PRO single-coil pickups are individually voiced for rhythm and lead and provide a huge variety of sound choices for the modern guitarist. For those used to carrying two or three guitars to get all their favorite sounds, the Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 may be all you'll ever need to take to a gig from now on.

Epiphone's guaranteed electronics also include standard controls for each pickup's volume and tone with smooth black tophats with metal inserts, a tough 3-way toggle switch, and an all-metal heavy-duty Epiphone 1/4" output jack that gives you a lifetime of worry-free use.

Tough Epiphone Hardware
The Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features rock-solid hardware including Epiphone's LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece along with "Deluxe" tuners with tulip style buttons.

Lifetime Guarantee
Like every Epiphone, the Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features a Limited Lifetime Warranty backed by world-famous 24/7/365 Gibson Customer Service.

This is a new guitar set-up from Epiphone with the addition of the p90's. Liked the range of the p90's so I'd gave it a chance (apparently mine is the first review). As stated fit and finish excellent I found no flaws. Natural was beautiful. Guitar was shipped out of Memphis which happens to be Gibson's home base where the semi-acoustic models are built. Wouldn't be surprised if they used Gibson's Plex system as their set-up is excellent (label said it was inspected and set-up in USA). If you want the coil splitters you won't find them on this guitar as they are single coil pups. Tone with P90's ranges from acoustic-like to down and dirty with a lot of variance in between, great range, great addition, excellent value. In addition to a number of other guitars I have a three year old Gibson Les Paul. The Les Paul is much more expensive but I would match the quality control on the Epiphone to it with the Epiphone having more tonal range. Hope this was helpful.

I ordered the Pelham Blue P90 Pro ES-339. Arrived reasonably on time (shipped to Canada), customs included so no surprises on delivery. Out of the box, the guitar looked stunning, neck was dead flat after tuning to pitch and needed some relief. The guitar intonated well at the twelfth fret but due to a plastic nut cut slightly shallow it was playing sharp at the first fret. Here comes the big disappointment though... the frets buzzed pretty badly at both the top (2nd-5th frets) and bottom of the neck around the 10-12th frets even with neck and bridge adjustments. Tuning stability was also not that great as one would expected with a plastic nut. The fretboard also felt a little sticky and the frets themselves were dull. Since the neck was dead straight and neck joint was reasonably well seated, I did the rocker test on the frets and a couple of them were high. I decided to opt for a fret job on the guitar (included reseating/pressing two frets and filing another one), and had a new Tusq nut installed (massively improving tuning stability and enhancing the tone). NOW, the guitar plays like a dream. The only minor thing left is slight rattle you get from the retention spring on the epiphone tune-o-matic bridge... but that is a common complaint for most epi owners (same on my 2012 Epi Les Paul Custom Pro and my Epi AlleyKat). The growling P90 pickups and unique look of the Pelham Blue model make it worth buying on sale even if you have to drop some money on setup/fret work. Best though to try one out at your local store to avoid major issues. I didn't bother sending it back to Musician's Friend as cross-boarder returns can be a huge headache. In the end, any foreign massed-produced guitar bought online runs the risk of having setup, fret, pickup, and/or wiring issues from being mass produced and shipping from humid/hot climates. Despite the issues I am still giving it 3.5 stars because it is so fun to play.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I was skeptical buying a guitar online. I didn't want it to arrive damaged and deal the headache of returns, etc. The guitar was packed well and in good shape, but the setup was non-existent. Fret buzz cRaZy!! I had to take it to a luthier to get the frets filed and set up properly. I didn't mind paying the price to get it set up properly because the guitar is so inexpensive. Now I love it. I tend to pick it up before my Strat (maybe it's the newness).

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar about 2 months ago and it has become my new favorite. I chose Cherry and actually purchased it at my local GC after an afternoon of comparison with the humbucker model. I've always been a P90 fan (I own a LP Special with P90's) and I couldn't be happier with the overall tone and playability of this guitar. I play lead guitar in my church worship band and this guitar covers it all very well. I typically trade off with a couple of tele's, however, I've been using this guitar exclusively since I purchased it. Before I even took the guitar home, I had it professionally set up. I continued to make minor tweaks to the action as it settled in. It's now perfect and the intonation is dead on. It also holds tune very well which is very important to me. I own several guitars including American teles and strats and 2 Gibsons. Overall, I would highly recommend this guitar for the money.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I've always liked P-90s, and own an Epi LP double-cutaway with 'em.

The level of finish on this guitar is excellent at this price-point. I ordered this guitar and received it very quickly, but the neck pickup tone control was non-functional. MF sent a new guitar immediately, and the second unit functions flawlessly. I did need to perform a setup on both instruments, however -- action was a bit high, even for someone like me who likes the action a bit higher than most people, and intonation was 'WAY off. Once those minor glitches were corrected, it plays great. Playing through a 2-watt Vox Li'l Night Train into a 1-12 Jensen speaker, volume @4-5, tone @10, it has a nice, smooth tone. Crank the guitar volume to 10, and even with the Vox at about half volume, it had a REALLY good bluesy grind going on. Back off on the tone, it's still good, though it does muddy up @~3. Through a '59 tweed Deluxe, Neil Young showed up.

I changed the strings from the factory 0.009s to 0.010s, and redid the intonation. I think it sounds better with heavier strings.

I REALLY like this guitar. I also bought an Epi hard-shell case. This guitar's worth it.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This little beauty is simply one of the nicest guitars I've ever owned. For me, the first thing is the paint and finish - the vintage sunburst is better than I've ever seen from ANY maker - it is simply executed beautifully. The P90's simply scream without any hum. The smaller body style is perfect for me at 5'9" tall. I own 335's but really prefer this smaller silhouette. Epi - you've hit a home run with the ES 339 P90.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have played guitar for 16 years now. I have played PRS, Gibson Sgs and Les pauls, many epiphone sgs and les pauls, Ibanez artcores, Gretsch duo jets and 6118 annis, fender strats teles jaguars, you name the guitar and I have most likely have played it. I love this guitar and for the price range it can not be beat. The only thing I have found bad with this guitar is a hair line crack in the binding. But with the way this guitar sounds, looks, and feels I don't even care about that tiny flaw. Usually with Epiphones I swap out all the electronics and pickups for CTS pots and Gibson pups, but this guitar sounds awesome right outta the box. Better yet I bought it in Ebony when Musician's Friend had it on sale! I will be headed to Detroit to record with my band this month and this guitar will be on those recordings. It was setup great right out of the box. Only down side is there is no case with it, but I just bought a road runner gig bag for it also on the cheap from Musician's Friend. Awesome guitar, excellent price, will be holding on the this baby for a long while. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS AWESOME GUITAR!!!

My second and third guitars were Epiphones from the '60s, but they've been gone for years. This ES 339 is beautiful Pelham Blue, great finishing, straight neck, frets very good, light weight, feels right! Had to adjust intonation on all 6, but everything else was great. Very nice player. Bought it on Wednesday night, got it delivered Monday morning! 1973 Yamaha FG 180, 1968 Fender Telecaster, 2010 Koma (with signature by Walt Wilkins), 2008 Gibson Hummingbird, 2012 Gibson Les Paul Studio, 2010 Epiphone EB-3, 2014 Epiphone ES 339 P90 Pro!!!

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Got the 339 P90 Pro in Ebony on sale at MF. My first impression - I was blown away by the overall quality, fit and finish of the guitar when it arrived. I was somewhat surprised by the gloss finish since the pics on the website showed a matte or satin finish. Either way it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Out of the box, the action was a bit high and intonation was a bit sharp at the 12th fret for all the strings. All easily adjusted. I left the stock strings on and the fretboard has the usual Epiphone gunk on it. I think it is polishing compound from the factory, I'll clean/scrape it off and oil the fretboard when I put new strings on. The neck was very flat when tuned to pitch with almost no relief.

I adjusted the bridge height, not super low, just low enough to play without any fret buzz. I adjusted the intonation and was ready to to put it though its paces. I played it unplugged and there are no annoying buzzes or rattles to speak of.

Then I plugged her into my little Peavey Classic 20. Queue the choir of angels. This thing just sings, the clean tones when both pickups are selected are unlike any other guitar I've ever played and I mean that in the best way possible. Turn up the gain and you get that P90 growl; perfect for classic rock tones. Flip the selector to the neck pickup and you can get some nice warm blues tones.

I'm a home player and play for my own enjoyment, but I can't see any reason why this could not be a gigging guitar after a simple setup. I dare you to find a semi hollow that looks, plays, and sounds as nice at this price point.
