OVERVIEW

A country/rock classic plugs in.

The Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric guitar brings the legendary country/rock "Hummingbird" into the 21st century with the new Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system.

First introduced in 1960, the square shouldered Hummingbird quickly became a classic thanks to Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who used a Hummingbird for rhythm on early Stones hits like "Satisfaction," "Play With Fire," and "Under My Thumb." There are also many classic photographs of Keith using a Hummingbird on sessions for Exile on Main Street, Goat's Head Soup, and Sticky Fingers. Today, the Hummingbird is still a go-to acoustic for rockers like Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow, and Kid Rock when they need a rhythm guitar with smooth action and superb "woody" tone that's full of character.

On its own, the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric can drive an all-acoustic band or be front and center at a picking party with its sweet, balanced tone. Now with the Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system, The Hummingbird PRO can plug-in and hold its own on any size stage.

Solid Spruce Tonewood
The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric features a solid spruce top. Spruce is a rich and complex tonewood that begins to breathe and improve with age. The more you play, the better it sounds! The body and neck are made from select mahogany. The Hummingbird PRO neck has a classic SlimTaper D profile and features a 24.75" scale and is attached to the body with a glued-in dovetail joint. The rosewood fingerboard has pearloid parallelogram inlays, 20 medium frets, a 12" radius, and a 1.68" nut. There is single ply white binding on the fingerboard and 5-ply white & black binding on the body top while the back of the body has single ply white binding. The Hummingbird PRO has the classic sloped dovewing headstock has the "Epiphone" logo in white.

The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric's reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for smooth action and intonation. The Shadow NanoFlex pickup system is under the saddle and the classic Hummingbird/flower tortoise shell style pickguard is easy to spot on stage or across a room.

Shadow Pickup System
Epiphone and Shadow Germany have worked together for over a decade at perfecting ways to amplify an acoustic guitar on stage. The Hummingbird PRO is just one of many Epiphone guitars that feature a cutting edge pickup system that can handle any size gig and still produce an "acoustic" sound. The Hummingbird PRO's controls for the Shadow ePerformer Preamp are on the upper bout and include controls for Master Volume, Treble and Bass EQ, Mute, and a Dynamics control adjusted via a frequency curve. There is also a low batter indicator. The preamp is powered by two 2032 batteries. The output jack and strap locks are nickel and the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric is strung at the Epiphone factory with time-tested D'Addario Phosphor (12-53) strings.

I've had this guitar for less than a week, but I've owned and played many acoustic guitars, so I think I can give a fair review. First of all, this is a beautiful guitar. It's called "faded cherry," but it's more of a faded orange, which I actually like better. The finish is stunning. Everyone who's seen it loves it and/or is jealous.

Unlike many of the reviews I've read (on many different websites), mine was not "perfect out of the box." The action was set very low, but there was a lot of fret buzz on the low end (the "E" and "A" strings) and on the "B" string, especially on the 3rd and 5th frets. I contemplated returning the guitar, but I had already fallen in love with it and didn't want to wait for a new one (especially since they are/were out of stock), so I decided to see what I could do with it. I needed to loosen the truss rod a bit to get rid of the buzz, and, even then, the "B" string still had a slight buzz on the 3rd and 5th frets. I thought the guitar might have some dead frets, but when I put a new set of Martin SPs on, the problems with fret buzz on the "B" string, to my great relief, disappeared completely, so it must have been the factory strings. Still the action is a tad higher than some might like if they do a lot of lead playing up and down the neck. Since I often strum very hard and mostly play in the first few positions, it isn't a problem for me. It is still very, very playable, just not perfect. But, this is not a Gibson, so perfection can't be expected. The intonation is just about perfect up and down the neck, and the tone is great in every position on the guitar.

Speaking of tone, this guitar has a wonderful, full, warm tone. It's the best sounding acoustic guitar I've ever had, and I've had some more expensive ones. I can't say I've heard many, if any, acoustics that sound better. It projects well and, I think, has strong lows and ringing highs. It sounded good with the factory strings, but even better with a new set of Martins (medium/12's). And what really makes this guitar such a bargain is that it sounds fantastic plugged in. Many acoustics lose their "acoustic" sound when played through an amp, but the Hummingbird Pro retains its "acoustic" sound when plugged in, whether fingerpicking or strumming. They've done a fantastic job with the pick-ups. I just wish they would have used the version with the onboard tuner. I wouldn't have minded paying a little more for it. It would have been useful.

Overall, this guitar is a steal for the price. It is certainly not the quality of a Gibson Hummingbird, but that costs ten times as much. After reading 15 reviews about how they were perfect out of the box, I was a little disappointed with the fret buzz. After a little adjusting, though, I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to gig with it.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

After playing my Epi PR-150 for several months before I received the Hummingbird Pro, the Hummingbird sounded and felt pretty flat on bass response. The over all tone was no better than my PR-150. But the PR-150 has a superb, full tone including very nice bass feel. The Hummingbird has plug in capability which is a definite plus. I can't wait to test it on my Peavy Escort 6000 personal p.a. system. I removed the classic pick guard in favor of my art. I hand painted the new art on this fire orange beauty. I thought 'cherry' was red, not red-orange. Fire orange is the proper name for the color of sunburst finish. Hello. The greatest asset of this guitar is not it's color nor it's sound. The thing that grabs my attention and appreciation of this instrument is it's craftsmanship and finish. I have played the best and most expensive guitars. This guitar's tone and sound is certainly no disgrace. It is as good as it's price and considerably better. It's craftsmanship and finish are as good as the best. It is perfect in that respect. I will use this guitar until either it or I bite the dust. I like it. Not saying that I won't play another just for a little variety. It is a very good guitar. Feels like it will outlast Mike Freedom. That is saying a lot.

Was A fine Gigging Instrument

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought a "Scratch & Dent" Epi Hummingbird about 9 years ago from MF and it has served me well since then. These Hummingbirds did not had pickups back then so I had a Fishman undersaddle pup installed, and the neck set up, frets dressed etc. It is, and remains a great guitar for gigging. Sounds great amplified. I recorded an album in Nashville in 2008 and the engineer, who had set up a couple of Royer mikes in the studio, ended up using the direct feed from the Fishman Pickup. Now this could be that, acoustically, this guitar is not that great. If you are playing live through a DI into a PA it'll be just fine.
I just recently purchased a Gibson Hummingbird and the difference is astounding. playing acoustically the Epiphone can't compare. However, playing through a PA with the Gibson is another story. The qualities that make it great acoustic guitar work against it when plugged in. Massive feedback problems. I'm going to have to get a soundhole blocker for it.
To sum up - he Epiphone Hummingbird is a fine guitar for the price especially for live performing where you a playing amplified.

I don't know how epiphone does it but for the money I don't see how you can beat this guitar. Straight out of the box this thing is nice. Doesnt have the overall tone my Takemine has but I paid three times the amount for that guitar. When you plug it in it comes alive. Has to be the best onboard preamp I have ever heard. Like I said it's amazing this guitar can be sold for this price. And Musicians Friends customer service is the best period.

This guitar feels and plays like more expensive guitars. The action, intonation, and tuning hold are excellent. Out of the box, this guitar needed no adjustments. The tuning heads are fantastic as well in that they are very smooth and provide great fine control. For the price, it totally exceeded my expectations. The sound is not quite as rich and full as my more expensive guitars but that was expected given it is less than half the price. Finally, it feels well built and is so comfortable to play and I just love the finish.

Have had my Hummingbird almost two years. I have had nothing but compliments on the way the guitar sounds and the way it looks. I'v had the same gig for over two years and was playing a Washburn and also played an Ibanez...once i replaced the stock strings with Nanowebs the feeling improved and i got less fret buzz. Compares very favorably with the more expensive Gibson Hummingbird, Martins and even a Taylor.

I just bought this guitar, and what a great instrument Epiphone has made for us. The entire thing is perfect!
Fit finish, playability, and the Shadow pickup system! I simply cannot put this thing down. I have been so content with this, I haven't touched My Martin!
Notes just jump out of this guitar, and She sounds wonderful with a slide as well.
Looking for the Vintage vibe but don't want to take an expensive original out, this won't let You down. It seems to me that the good Folks at Epiphone have become a "go to" Brand and have exited the realm of "at this price point". No excuses needed at all!

This guitar is an amazing value. It has a beautiful balanced tone and is very well-made. It sounds big and wonderful, very articulate highs and mids, tight (not boomy) bass played through my Crate acoustic guitar amp. It is drop dead gorgeous. Not one flaw on it. I am very impressed with Epi. For the price, it is a no brainer. You can't go wrong with this. Buy it! I never write reviews, but I had to make an exception for this baby!
