OVERVIEW

A country/rock classic plugs in.

The Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric guitar brings the legendary country/rock "Hummingbird" into the 21st century with the new Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system.

First introduced in 1960, the square shouldered Hummingbird quickly became a classic thanks to Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who used a Hummingbird for rhythm on early Stones hits like "Satisfaction," "Play With Fire," and "Under My Thumb." There are also many classic photographs of Keith using a Hummingbird on sessions for Exile on Main Street, Goat's Head Soup, and Sticky Fingers. Today, the Hummingbird is still a go-to acoustic for rockers like Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow, and Kid Rock when they need a rhythm guitar with smooth action and superb "woody" tone that's full of character.

On its own, the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric can drive an all-acoustic band or be front and center at a picking party with its sweet, balanced tone. Now with the Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system, The Hummingbird PRO can plug-in and hold its own on any size stage.

Solid Spruce Tonewood
The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric features a solid spruce top. Spruce is a rich and complex tonewood that begins to breathe and improve with age. The more you play, the better it sounds! The body and neck are made from select mahogany. The Hummingbird PRO neck has a classic SlimTaper D profile and features a 24.75" scale and is attached to the body with a glued-in dovetail joint. The rosewood fingerboard has pearloid parallelogram inlays, 20 medium frets, a 12" radius, and a 1.68" nut. There is single ply white binding on the fingerboard and 5-ply white & black binding on the body top while the back of the body has single ply white binding. The Hummingbird PRO has the classic sloped dovewing headstock has the "Epiphone" logo in white.

The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric's reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for smooth action and intonation. The Shadow NanoFlex pickup system is under the saddle and the classic Hummingbird/flower tortoise shell style pickguard is easy to spot on stage or across a room.

Shadow Pickup System
Epiphone and Shadow Germany have worked together for over a decade at perfecting ways to amplify an acoustic guitar on stage. The Hummingbird PRO is just one of many Epiphone guitars that feature a cutting edge pickup system that can handle any size gig and still produce an "acoustic" sound. The Hummingbird PRO's controls for the Shadow ePerformer Preamp are on the upper bout and include controls for Master Volume, Treble and Bass EQ, Mute, and a Dynamics control adjusted via a frequency curve. There is also a low batter indicator. The preamp is powered by two 2032 batteries. The output jack and strap locks are nickel and the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric is strung at the Epiphone factory with time-tested D'Addario Phosphor (12-53) strings.

After playing my Epi PR-150 for several months before I received the Hummingbird Pro, the Hummingbird sounded and felt pretty flat on bass response. The over all tone was no better than my PR-150. But the PR-150 has a superb, full tone including very nice bass feel. The Hummingbird has plug in capability which is a definite plus. I can't wait to test it on my Peavy Escort 6000 personal p.a. system. I removed the classic pick guard in favor of my art. I hand painted the new art on this fire orange beauty. I thought 'cherry' was red, not red-orange. Fire orange is the proper name for the color of sunburst finish. Hello. The greatest asset of this guitar is not it's color nor it's sound. The thing that grabs my attention and appreciation of this instrument is it's craftsmanship and finish. I have played the best and most expensive guitars. This guitar's tone and sound is certainly no disgrace. It is as good as it's price and considerably better. It's craftsmanship and finish are as good as the best. It is perfect in that respect. I will use this guitar until either it or I bite the dust. I like it. Not saying that I won't play another just for a little variety. It is a very good guitar. Feels like it will outlast Mike Freedom. That is saying a lot.

    Awesome Acoustic Guitar

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for a month now. This is my third acoustic guitar. This is by far the easiest one to play out of them. There is no Fret Buzz, and the sound is great for the price. It is made in Indonesia and assembled in USA. Straight out of the box, it was in tune except for the G string. It was only a half step off, and that's probably due from me taking out of the box. I just checked the electronics for this review. I have a Vox AC30. I had it in the low normal input, and I didn't hear anything, and the volume was a quarter of the way up, which is a lot for a AC30, but I turned it a little more up, and then I was able to hear it clearly. Even though the control panel for the electronic looks cheap on the hummingbird, it still works and sounds good.

    An Ebony Beauty!

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a very well made, very good sounding, and very beautiful guitar. It was packed very carefully in its box, and arrived in perfect condition. No shipping damage of any sort. I looked over the entire guitar very carefully and could not find any flaws. The frets are dressed nicely, the action was set up how I like it (a comfortable medium which is what I prefer), and...it was also pretty much in tune. After tuning it up to standard pitch, it sounded great which is one benefit of having a solid top as well as good quality tuners. The guitar sounded really good unplugged but then...it sounded even better plugged in. I was pleasantly surprised and I very much enjoyed this guitar's "electric voice". The strings have settled nicely after having it for a few days now, and I am certain that the guitar will continue to sound better over time. I own a few high end guitars and the Hummingbird PRO is definitely in there as far as fit, finish, and ease of playing. This is definitely a quality investment at this price point. Well done Epiphone!

Serious quality for a laughable price

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I wanted a guitar that I could take to jam with friends that wouldn't be drowned out by all the other instruments (which is what happens with my Gibson J50 that I've owned for over 40 years). But this guitar really shines when plugged into an amp or P.A. I would have rated it 5 stars, except for an annoyingly loud popping noise that occurs when the palm of my hand hits the bridge. I am going to fiddle with the EQ on my amp to see if that helps. P..S. I'm also impressed with the finish on this instrument, especially considering its price point.

I play at venues of up to 100 people and wanted to upgrade from my current guitar. The Hummingbird has a nice look and a great reputation so I pulled the trigger on it and have not been disappointed.

Fit and finish on this guitar is perfect - kudos to Epiphone for making a guitar like this that doesn't break the bank. The sound is even better when plugged in although I fully expect the sound will get better over time unplugged because of the solid spruce top. This is a very substantial guitar for the money...

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Won't add too much to the other great reviews; you can already tell this is a fine guitar in terms of sound & looks. Well set up out-of-the box, intonations fine, as is string height. I'm comparing it to my well-seasoned, mellow 46 year-old J-200 jumbo & for a new acoustic, the HB's good from the get-go & has great sustain & personality. But, it truly sings best when amped -- the lows are velvety & mids & highs warm & well-balanced. I will probably replace the stock strings with a bit warmer ones soon, but that's certainly no fault of the guitar. Plus, the guitar's a real beauty & the quality is excellent -- love the ebony finish. May not be as good as a 3+K Gibson HB, but at 10% of the cost, who's complaining?
