A country/rock classic plugs in.

The Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric guitar brings the legendary country/rock "Hummingbird" into the 21st century with the new Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system.

First introduced in 1960, the square shouldered Hummingbird quickly became a classic thanks to Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who used a Hummingbird for rhythm on early Stones hits like "Satisfaction," "Play With Fire," and "Under My Thumb." There are also many classic photographs of Keith using a Hummingbird on sessions for Exile on Main Street, Goat’s Head Soup, and Sticky Fingers. Today, the Hummingbird is still a go-to acoustic for rockers like Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow, and Kid Rock when they need a rhythm guitar with smooth action and superb “woody” tone that’s full of character.

On its own, the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric can drive an all-acoustic band or be front and center at a picking party with its sweet, balanced tone. Now with the Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system, The Hummingbird PRO can plug-in and hold its own on any size stage.

Solid Spruce Tonewood
The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric features a solid spruce top. Spruce is a rich and complex tonewood that begins to breathe and improve with age. The more you play, the better it sounds! The body and neck are made from select mahogany. The Hummingbird PRO neck has a classic SlimTaper D profile and features a 25.5" scale and is attached to the body with a glued-in dovetail joint. The rosewood fingerboard has pearloid parallelogram inlays, 20 medium frets, a 12" radius, and a 1.68" nut. There is single ply white binding on the fingerboard and 5-ply white & black binding on the body top while the back of the body has single ply white binding. The Hummingbird PRO has the classic sloped dovewing headstock has the “Epiphone" logo in white.

The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric's reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for smooth action and intonation. The Shadow NanoFlex pickup system is under the saddle and the classic Hummingbird/flower tortoise shell style pickguard is easy to spot on stage or across a room.

Shadow Pickup System
Epiphone and Shadow Germany have worked together for over a decade at perfecting ways to amplify an acoustic guitar on stage. The Hummingbird PRO is just one of many Epiphone guitars that feature a cutting edge pickup system that can handle any size gig and still produce an "acoustic" sound. The Hummingbird PRO's controls for the Shadow ePerformer Preamp are on the upper bout and include controls for Master Volume, Treble and Bass EQ, Mute, and a Dynamics control adjusted via a frequency curve. There is also a low batter indicator. The preamp is powered by two 2032 batteries. The output jack and strap locks are nickel and the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric is strung at the Epiphone factory with time-tested D'Addario Phosphor (12-53) strings.

I've had this guitar for less than a week, but I've owned and played many acoustic guitars, so I think I can give a fair review. First of all, this is a beautiful guitar. It's called "faded cherry," but it's more of a faded orange, which I actually like better. The finish is stunning. Everyone who's seen it loves it and/or is jealous.

Unlike many of the reviews I've read (on many different websites), mine was not "perfect out of the box." The action was set very low, but there was a lot of fret buzz on the low end (the "E" and "A" strings) and on the "B" string, especially on the 3rd and 5th frets. I contemplated returning the guitar, but I had already fallen in love with it and didn't want to wait for a new one (especially since they are/were out of stock), so I decided to see what I could do with it. I needed to loosen the truss rod a bit to get rid of the buzz, and, even then, the "B" string still had a slight buzz on the 3rd and 5th frets. I thought the guitar might have some dead frets, but when I put a new set of Martin SPs on, the problems with fret buzz on the "B" string, to my great relief, disappeared completely, so it must have been the factory strings. Still the action is a tad higher than some might like if they do a lot of lead playing up and down the neck. Since I often strum very hard and mostly play in the first few positions, it isn't a problem for me. It is still very, very playable, just not perfect. But, this is not a Gibson, so perfection can't be expected. The intonation is just about perfect up and down the neck, and the tone is great in every position on the guitar.

Speaking of tone, this guitar has a wonderful, full, warm tone. It's the best sounding acoustic guitar I've ever had, and I've had some more expensive ones. I can't say I've heard many, if any, acoustics that sound better. It projects well and, I think, has strong lows and ringing highs. It sounded good with the factory strings, but even better with a new set of Martins (medium/12's). And what really makes this guitar such a bargain is that it sounds fantastic plugged in. Many acoustics lose their "acoustic" sound when played through an amp, but the Hummingbird Pro retains its "acoustic" sound when plugged in, whether fingerpicking or strumming. They've done a fantastic job with the pick-ups. I just wish they would have used the version with the onboard tuner. I wouldn't have minded paying a little more for it. It would have been useful.

Overall, this guitar is a steal for the price. It is certainly not the quality of a Gibson Hummingbird, but that costs ten times as much. After reading 15 reviews about how they were perfect out of the box, I was a little disappointed with the fret buzz. After a little adjusting, though, I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to gig with it.

This Hummingbird is incredible, plays like an electric. A lot of acoustics sound good when plugged in but sound flat on its own, this sounds great plugged in or unplugged. It rivals my Taylor big baby.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

Needed Serious set up - string heights in nut had to be cut way lower, Truss rod had no tension on it, and Saddle was quite high. After these were adjusted this became One GREAT Guitar. I also have an Epiphone Dove Pro from Musician's Friend which was great right out of the box. I owned and played a 1963 SJ200 for many years. The Dove, and now this Hummingbird, are each as sweet as that old Gibson. The Sustain on this Hummingbird in particular is just so great. Even with strings that I have used daily for months, this Hummingbird just sings. Too bad this required so much set up. There is a lot of good set up advice on Youtube. I took my time and all's well that ends well. This Epiphone Hummingbird is very well built, Just lacked proper set up. I am very pleased.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird Pro Acoustic Electric Guitar:

This is a fantastic entry-level guitar or a secondary guitar for travel or worry-free use. It has a tinny sound to it, but if country music or bluegrass is your genre of choice this won't be much of a disappointment. The Shadow pickup gives this guitar a much fuller sound when plugged into a PA system or amp. It sounds like a completely different guitar and one with much more value! The action on this guitar was extremely low right out of the box making it very simple to play.
