OVERVIEW

A country/rock classic plugs in.

The Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric guitar brings the legendary country/rock "Hummingbird" into the 21st century with the new Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system.

First introduced in 1960, the square shouldered Hummingbird quickly became a classic thanks to Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who used a Hummingbird for rhythm on early Stones hits like "Satisfaction," "Play With Fire," and "Under My Thumb." There are also many classic photographs of Keith using a Hummingbird on sessions for Exile on Main Street, Goat's Head Soup, and Sticky Fingers. Today, the Hummingbird is still a go-to acoustic for rockers like Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow, and Kid Rock when they need a rhythm guitar with smooth action and superb "woody" tone that's full of character.

On its own, the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric can drive an all-acoustic band or be front and center at a picking party with its sweet, balanced tone. Now with the Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system, The Hummingbird PRO can plug-in and hold its own on any size stage.

Solid Spruce Tonewood
The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric features a solid spruce top. Spruce is a rich and complex tonewood that begins to breathe and improve with age. The more you play, the better it sounds! The body and neck are made from select mahogany. The Hummingbird PRO neck has a classic SlimTaper D profile and features a 24.75" scale and is attached to the body with a glued-in dovetail joint. The rosewood fingerboard has pearloid parallelogram inlays, 20 medium frets, a 12" radius, and a 1.68" nut. There is single ply white binding on the fingerboard and 5-ply white & black binding on the body top while the back of the body has single ply white binding. The Hummingbird PRO has the classic sloped dovewing headstock has the "Epiphone" logo in white.

The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric's reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for smooth action and intonation. The Shadow NanoFlex pickup system is under the saddle and the classic Hummingbird/flower tortoise shell style pickguard is easy to spot on stage or across a room.

Shadow Pickup System
Epiphone and Shadow Germany have worked together for over a decade at perfecting ways to amplify an acoustic guitar on stage. The Hummingbird PRO is just one of many Epiphone guitars that feature a cutting edge pickup system that can handle any size gig and still produce an "acoustic" sound. The Hummingbird PRO's controls for the Shadow ePerformer Preamp are on the upper bout and include controls for Master Volume, Treble and Bass EQ, Mute, and a Dynamics control adjusted via a frequency curve. There is also a low batter indicator. The preamp is powered by two 2032 batteries. The output jack and strap locks are nickel and the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric is strung at the Epiphone factory with time-tested D'Addario Phosphor (12-53) strings.

I've had this guitar for less than a week, but I've owned and played many acoustic guitars, so I think I can give a fair review. First of all, this is a beautiful guitar. It's called "faded cherry," but it's more of a faded orange, which I actually like better. The finish is stunning. Everyone who's seen it loves it and/or is jealous.

Unlike many of the reviews I've read (on many different websites), mine was not "perfect out of the box." The action was set very low, but there was a lot of fret buzz on the low end (the "E" and "A" strings) and on the "B" string, especially on the 3rd and 5th frets. I contemplated returning the guitar, but I had already fallen in love with it and didn't want to wait for a new one (especially since they are/were out of stock), so I decided to see what I could do with it. I needed to loosen the truss rod a bit to get rid of the buzz, and, even then, the "B" string still had a slight buzz on the 3rd and 5th frets. I thought the guitar might have some dead frets, but when I put a new set of Martin SPs on, the problems with fret buzz on the "B" string, to my great relief, disappeared completely, so it must have been the factory strings. Still the action is a tad higher than some might like if they do a lot of lead playing up and down the neck. Since I often strum very hard and mostly play in the first few positions, it isn't a problem for me. It is still very, very playable, just not perfect. But, this is not a Gibson, so perfection can't be expected. The intonation is just about perfect up and down the neck, and the tone is great in every position on the guitar.

Speaking of tone, this guitar has a wonderful, full, warm tone. It's the best sounding acoustic guitar I've ever had, and I've had some more expensive ones. I can't say I've heard many, if any, acoustics that sound better. It projects well and, I think, has strong lows and ringing highs. It sounded good with the factory strings, but even better with a new set of Martins (medium/12's). And what really makes this guitar such a bargain is that it sounds fantastic plugged in. Many acoustics lose their "acoustic" sound when played through an amp, but the Hummingbird Pro retains its "acoustic" sound when plugged in, whether fingerpicking or strumming. They've done a fantastic job with the pick-ups. I just wish they would have used the version with the onboard tuner. I wouldn't have minded paying a little more for it. It would have been useful.

Overall, this guitar is a steal for the price. It is certainly not the quality of a Gibson Hummingbird, but that costs ten times as much. After reading 15 reviews about how they were perfect out of the box, I was a little disappointed with the fret buzz. After a little adjusting, though, I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to gig with it.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I just bought this guitar, and what a great instrument Epiphone has made for us. The entire thing is perfect!
Fit finish, playability, and the Shadow pickup system! I simply cannot put this thing down. I have been so content with this, I haven't touched My Martin!
Notes just jump out of this guitar, and She sounds wonderful with a slide as well.
Looking for the Vintage vibe but don't want to take an expensive original out, this won't let You down. It seems to me that the good Folks at Epiphone have become a "go to" Brand and have exited the realm of "at this price point". No excuses needed at all!

The guitar was delivered quickly and without a scratch. Beautiful finish and very nice sound. Maybe just a tad on the bright side but suspect new strings will take care of that. Feel like a star with this guitar strapped across your shoulder.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is an amazing value. It has a beautiful balanced tone and is very well-made. It sounds big and wonderful, very articulate highs and mids, tight (not boomy) bass played through my Crate acoustic guitar amp. It is drop dead gorgeous. Not one flaw on it. I am very impressed with Epi. For the price, it is a no brainer. You can't go wrong with this. Buy it! I never write reviews, but I had to make an exception for this baby!

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

My experience is a bit different.

My guitar came unplayable. Strings flat against the frets. Constant buzzing worse than E!News. I wanted to cry especially after all the reviews about, "right out of the box...." "Out of the box, it...." "Opened it and..."

So off to my local luthier I trotted.

Two weeks later - he's a busy man - I can now join the throng saying: wow.

First off it is flat out beautiful.

Second, it plays like a dream. Up and down the fret board, open chords, barre chords, double stops, you name it this baby can handle it.

I played it several days acoustic before I remembered, "Oh, yeah. I can plug this in."

          Great guitar.

Great sounding guitar for the price.

The guitar was good sounding out of the box, but had some buzzing when strumming hard.
I took it to a local instrument store and after their setup (~$50) it sounds fantastic.

I have an EJ200 and PR7 to compare to and the sound of the Hummer is much more higher in tone than the deeper sound of the EJ... more treble sounding.
But, the attack is softer than the all maple PR7, so a good balance of both that will work for rock, country, or finger picking.

Would recommend as an all purpose guitar or if you can't swing the price of the Gibson model.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This acoustic guitar is the most solid and best constructed one I have yet played. It was actually a little intimidating at first, being such a step up from what I was used to. This is truly a "Pro" caliber instrument, just as the name proclaims it to be. It is hard to quantify, but you can just feel the quality built into this guitar when you pick it up. I find the notes of the individual strings (especially when finger-picked) to be somehow more well defined than what is possible to produce on less capable guitars, and even strummed chords project better and more clearly. This goes whether the instrument is played unplugged or hooked into an acoustic amp (or electric guitar amp at a clean setting.)

All in all, the Epi Hummingbird Pro is truly something special, and I will echo the sentiment of the famous player who once said of its much more expensive big brother, that it may well be "all the acoustic guitar anyone would ever need."

I have played many acoustic guitars through the years. I have owned a couple here and there. I have played the Taylor's, Martins, seagull ect ect. The Epiphone hummingbird Pro hangs with the best of them. For the price this guitar seems like it is worth double what you pay. The sound is great. Very balanced with lots of deep resignation and enough highs to cut through and balance the tone. Plugged in it sounds amazing as well. The action and setup is almost perfect. Super easy to play and great feel. Stay in tune just fine. If anything the strings could be a bit higher as I get some fret buzz here and there. For the price it is way worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course this is just my two cents :)
