Received guitar in good order. Opened large box to find well packed Epiphone box with said guitar inside. Opened Epiphone box to find Worn Cherry Les Paul P90 Special well packed inside with no damage or issue. Very impressed how this is sent from Epiphone. I'm not sure MF even handles it. I got the impression it came right from Epiphone distribution which is fine.
After unpacking, I was pleasantly surprised to find a very nice looking guitar that is beyond out of tune. Wasn't expecting it to be, strummed a few chords and had a good laugh. Couldn't help but notice not one sharp fret all the way up the fretboard, another pleasant surprise.
Tuned guitar up and played a few more chords up and down the fretboard. All sounded great and in tune. Can't believe the intonation being this good out of the box. Switch is solid and pots are firm to turn, not lose or lacking resistance. Finish is satin and does show life's finger marks which is fine, polished right off. Strings feel dry/tacky from likely a film to protect during shipping. Could wipe off but plan to restring immediately anyway. Epiphone neck plate was upside down so a quick 180 took care of that. Neck screws are thinner than I would like but are satisfactory. The big surprise comes from taking of the pot plate to find a shielded cover and 500k Alpha pots which would explain why they had some substance when dialled in. Very susprised and impressed. Thanks Epiphone, I won't be upgrading anything on this guitar!!
Now that it's restrung with Rotosound Pinks (best strings on earth) and fretboard lemon oiled, this guitar absolutely sings!! I am astounded by what I've pays and what I have. Plays and sounds fabulous. I am really pleased with this guitar, so much that I have ordered a TV Yellow for my son. These P90's have the best in high and low bite through my Peavey Stereo Chorus 2x12. I play clean, this is the amp for it and now I have the guitar for it. Unbelievable for the money. Highly recommend getting one!!!!!

I bought this guitar to stash at church as a spare, a rehearsal instrument. Now that I've taken it apart and put it back together right, it might not go to church. Out of the box, it sounded lifeless. The gap at the neck heel was unacceptably wide, so off went the factory strings and the neck. When the neck came out, a chunk of the body's neck pocket came with it. Not good, but this is where inexpensive (and expensive) bolt-neck guitars seem consistently to be less than great. Clamps, Titebond, half an hour's filing. With the neck reinstalled & better wood-to-wood contact, the guitar came to life. I replaced the stock wraparound bridge with a lightweight Wilkinson wraparound unit, because I wanted the other bridge for another guitar, and I wanted to see what the Wilkinson might do for the Epiphone. FINALLY we are fully strung-up & action is acceptable, so the fun stuff can begin: setting the pickup height on the twin P-90s. Initial impression of pickups is positive. They are brash, like P-90s should be, but I think they will dial in nicely. I love P-90s, and it puzzles me that Gibson doesn't offer more varieties of it, the way every other serious pickup manufacturer does.... All in all a promising little bottom-feeder of a guitar, but I've been rebuilding bottom-feeders for 30-plus years, so if you're like me and you like Frankensteining cheap axes, this is for you. If you want something that will play nice right out of the box, this might not be for you. I give it three stars for the pickups.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

Owning 26 Guitars, I Realized I Did Not own one with p-90s, and The Fact That Epiphone Had Sent Me an Email with a video promoting the Epiphone Les Paul Special with the p90s, Intrigued, I watched the Video, Wow ! I was impressed ! I did my homework/ researched you tube for videos -Comments about the guitar, then I ordered One from Musician's Friend, I ordered the T.V. Yellow and Received it On Feb. 8/17, I unboxed it and Inspected it, and was quite impressed, the Strings that came on it were not good , so that's the first that had to go, I gathered all my tools, and prepared for a lengthy set up, Boy was I wrong ! This Guitar really was set up great from the factory, only minor tweaks were needed on my part. The Neck was Great, I took off The Truss rod Cover And gave it a little tweak Clockwise, Let it set for a day, put on new strings, Ernie Ball Pink Slinkys 9-42, Adjusted bridge, couple of turns, adjusted pickup height, pick up pole screws were adjusted couple turns, Graphite in nut slots, Low e String Nut Was Filed Just A Little, Installed Set Of Black Schaller Strap Locks [Best in the Business], Tuned up, Checked for fret buzz, checked fret level, neck relief was good, plugged in Line 6 Practice Amp and played it for 3 hrs, straight ! This Little Guitar is great, Sound Great, Played Stones, Thin Lizzy, Billy Squier, Tom Petty, U get all these great p-90 sounds, now its my Favorite little Bang Around guitar ! For the price, don't Worry about Scratches , Dings, Just Play it., The Only Negative I Found is the Tuners, which are Below Quality, But I fore see Changing those in the future as well as adding a pickguard. For the Money, Quality, Build ,Neck, Pickups, These Are Great Guitars For Blues, Slide Players, Beginner's or Advanced.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I got the black one a couple of months ago. I'd been feeling the urge to acquire a new guitar (hadn't bought one in a couple of years), when this popped up on SDOTD. I checked out the reviews (very positive, mostly) and decided, why not? So glad I did. I've been playing for almost 30 years, mostly on Teles and Strats, and this is my first P90 equipped guitar. So impressed with these pups. Plugged it into my little Vox AC4TV and entered tone heaven! This guitar and amp are so good together. Perfect, nasty growl with the volume maxed, back it off on the guitar and it cleans up, nice and round. As others have noted, the tuners are pretty cheap, although mine seem to be holding pretty well, needing just an occasional tweak. Upgrading them is an easy fix for down the road. And yes, the frets could be dressed a little better on the edges. Another easy fix for another day. Right now I'm having too much fun to worry about it. All in all, I'd have to say Epiphone has packed a lot of bang for the buck into this little gem. If you're looking for an inexpensive 2nd guitar (or 3rd or 10th) as a backup or to mod or knock around on, or a first guitar for a kid or yourself, I highly recommend this one. I like mine so much I almost feel guilty that I got it on sale.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I was looking for a cheap guitar to modify for use as a road beater. Wanted something with a bolt-on neck so I could make adjustments. The specs on the neck were a spot-on match to my pricey Guild S4CE, so, I figured, what the heck, it's cheap and I can always use it for refretting practice and experimentation. I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled the thing out of the box. Neck was straight and true, good fretwork, and the satin finish was icing on the cake. Body was usable, as well. Bridge posts were a little off-center, but I fixed that by filing string grooves on the bridge to center and properly space the strings. Electronics were complete junk, which I was planning on removing anyway. No surprise there. Mounted a DiMarzio DP186 in the neck position and hardwired to a long-barrelled sealed output jack. No pots or switches. I control volume and tone at the amp. Made a pickguard to cover up all the holes, replaced the junk tuners with some Grover 102's and ended up with a guitar that plays and sounds better than a lot of overpriced Gibsons and Fenders I've played.

The stock guitar is OK as-is, but it really shines as a foundation for a custom build. The neck alone is worth the price. I can't understand how they can sell these so cheap. Guess I'll have to stop bad-mouthing the Chinese (and Epiphone). They've really upped their game.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I don't know how they make this guitar for this price. I changed the strings to D'addario ( you will have to change the strings) and it is a nice playing guitar. I will not tell you that it compares to my Gibson LP Standard or any of my Fender strats or tele. I will say that this guitar is a no-brainer for a beginner as it plays easy, stays in tune, does not buzz and is even hum-cancelling when using both pickups. I have tuned it to open E and am using it for slide work. It has a fat tone thanks to the P-90s. If you are a beginner looking for your first electric, then consider this one - it is lightweight too!. If you are an experienced player who needs a second guitar for slide work and does not want to drop a grand on another instrument, then consider this one. Another thing - the TV Yellow see thru finish is amazing and looks like a very expensive guitar. I've had this thing for 2 months and I cant find anything wrong with it.

Still, these Specials are a solid foundation. When your done making it your own? Results may vary, but we've had nothin' but Good Luck! Finished product sounds smooth, plays great & looks cool! What more can you ask for? All in all? Our fam LOVES the most recent Epiphone offerings.
