I bought a yellow one a year ago. I was interested in a lightweight shorter scale guitar as I mostly play Fenders, and also something I could work on and not worry about ruining. Out of the box it was OK, but it soon needed adjustments. The set bridge wasn't able to hold the tuning up to what my ears are used to, so I replaced it with a tunomatic bridge - this required plugging the holes of the old bridge with dowels and drilling new holes. While I was at it, I put on a surface mounted tremolo - both of these parts I got from a well-known internet discount supplier. So it worked OK for a while and then the tuners started slipping, so I replaced them with a set from the same place. Next, I found I was scratching the surface with my pick strumming so I bought a cheap black pickguard and cut it to fit. Then I repositioned the pickup switch, which my right hand was knocking off and on, so that it moves horizontally. Now the yellow guitar was working pretty good, but about 6 months later it got sloppy again and I had to adjust the truss rod and redo the intonation. But I couldn't get it exactly right so I took it to Shawn the guitar pro and he set it right! This guitar is very light, stays in perfect tune, looks great and the P90 pickups give it a unique sound compared to my other guitars. I do most of my practicing with it and have brought it on a few gigs. For just over double my initial investment I got some experience and a worthy instrument.

I bought this guitar to stash at church as a spare, a rehearsal instrument. Now that I've taken it apart and put it back together right, it might not go to church. Out of the box, it sounded lifeless. The gap at the neck heel was unacceptably wide, so off went the factory strings and the neck. When the neck came out, a chunk of the body's neck pocket came with it. Not good, but this is where inexpensive (and expensive) bolt-neck guitars seem consistently to be less than great. Clamps, Titebond, half an hour's filing. With the neck reinstalled & better wood-to-wood contact, the guitar came to life. I replaced the stock wraparound bridge with a lightweight Wilkinson wraparound unit, because I wanted the other bridge for another guitar, and I wanted to see what the Wilkinson might do for the Epiphone. FINALLY we are fully strung-up & action is acceptable, so the fun stuff can begin: setting the pickup height on the twin P-90s. Initial impression of pickups is positive. They are brash, like P-90s should be, but I think they will dial in nicely. I love P-90s, and it puzzles me that Gibson doesn't offer more varieties of it, the way every other serious pickup manufacturer does.... All in all a promising little bottom-feeder of a guitar, but I've been rebuilding bottom-feeders for 30-plus years, so if you're like me and you like Frankensteining cheap axes, this is for you. If you want something that will play nice right out of the box, this might not be for you. I give it three stars for the pickups.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I am adding another review here positively. I know a thing or two about electric guitars so I took apart the P-90 which are at a modest 5K ohms amount of 42awg wire. I manages by hand to wind on 2K more on the neck pickup a total of 7K, I then only managed 1K more on the bridge pickup but the improvement in tone was beefier and more like the Gibson SG I sold a few years back. Some P-90s are to bright and thin, not these, they get a nice rounded full tone to them giving the guitar an sound you can pay big money for. I also had some alnico magnets around A5s are what I used, and use two magnets per pickup. I am going to put in some CTS audio pots with the dimples just like old real Gibsons have. Good buy here. Also the neck would not behave so I lowered the bass sting by two gauges and it instantly came out strait.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

Purchased on a whim, I was intrigued by a cheap, solid body LP shape with P90s. No bragging, just a fact - this is the only cheap guitar I own. I bought a gig bag for it, and I don't think it's ever been in it. It just sits on the stand, next to the amp and keyboard, usually plugged in. Okay, sure it needed a little TLC to get it where I wanted it, but not much. The ends of the frets were a little rough; the truss rod needed a quarter turn (probably due to the low humidity where it lives), and the intonation was a hair off but actually pretty darn close now without resorting to a high end bridge with individual adjustments for each string. Action was good enough with a twist of the two bridge screws - I didn't even replace the nut. I did promptly swap out the strings, but I think most folks with preferences do that anyway. The tuners are cheapos, but you know what? They stay in tune just fine. The neck feels very close to my Gibson. The bolt-on neck is solid.

Those who bash the pickups or the fit/finish are forgetting what they paid for this thing. This is not an instrument for a studio artist or perfectionist. It is a great knock-around guitar or entry-level instrument for a novice. I'm writing this after owning mine for almost two years without problems.

Bottom line- Maybe I got lucky; I know these things are built in Asia. But for less than what you'd spring for at a pawn shop or Goodwill for what's probably junk anyway, this little dude just can't be beat at this very low price point.

I've not seen a better guitar at this price

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

These are amazing for the price. I bought one as a kick-around guitar and liked it so much I bought a second to set up for bottleneck only. The P90's add another sound to my collection. I do notice the basswood seems to mute the sustain quite a bit, but that's just part of the guitar's nature.

I like that I can leave it lying around the office or my house without worrying that something might damage it. At this price, who cares? I've not seen a better guitar at this price.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I am 36 years old and have been playing guitar since I was 12, and modding them since I was 16. I play mostly punk and hard rock with a bit of classic/glam rock al a David Bowie, The Stones, Slade, The New York Dolls, Suzie Quattro, Joan Jett, The Runaways, you get the picture. My main guitars are a 1995 Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Jaguar, a 2003 Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cutaway, and a 1982 Gibson Sonex Custom. I also have a 1999 Fender MIM Stratocaster that I did a custom build on, and that's what I bought this Epiphone for, to basically customize and experiment with without worry of wasting money. Little did I know what I was getting right out of the box.

My first thought after pulling this LP Special out of the box was how low the action was from the factory. I don't typically even pay attention to the action on any guitar when I first get it as I know it will need to be completely set up to my liking, and these are things that are not only subjective to the player, but they should also be expected. People on here that give a guitar 3 stars and their only complaints are the action was high, the neck needed adjusted, and the frets needed filed drive me crazy. These things are not reflective of the guitar people, they are temporary inçonveniences that I want set to my personal liking anyway, so don't bash the guitar until AFTER you get it set up. Anyway, I must have played it for 2-3 hours right out of the box and IT WAS FUN!!! Nice slim neck that is fast, which is very important to me with my little hands. The Epiphone stock P90's kick major butt, they growl when you need them to and are cleàr and airy when desired. If I compare them to the Gibson P90's I'd have to say they are different, but not in a bad way. Just different. Which is what I wanted anyway, I already have a Gibson, and I was going to customize my sound in this one anyway. All in all I loved it right out of the box. Expect to have a pro setup done and you're good to go. Very gigable.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

              OKAY...I bought a third one!!!
I already established that the Epiphone LP Special platforms are very stable and solid with its incorporated bridge and tail stop. (Less moving parts)
These with the 'Worn' finishes on the necks are slicker playing.
They are a familiar and comfortable feel with the LP body contours, plus they are lighter than the Standard LP.
              This model has P90's!!!
For those of us who grew up with these FAT wound single coil pickups know where a lot of the great Blues, Rock 'N Roll, and Jazz sounds came from.
I asked my Musician's Friend Gearhead, Courtland, how can Epiphone put P40's on this model...one of these pickups can cost as much as this guitar?
Mine had a distinctive, very mild hum, which was something that brought back some great memories.
This guitar plays with smooth colored tones, but when you crank it up, it's like cannons going off, the power is unbelievable from these P90 Bad Boys.
The only things missing is a small smoke filled club and a blue spotlight to set the mood.
I wish I had this guitar in 1967.
