I've been playing for over 20 years, had a number of guitars and have to say this one is great!!
I own a couple Fenders, a few Epi's and a Gibby. I took a chance (a cheap one!) on a P90 equipped guitar. After reading more than a few reviews I was expecting just an ok guitar but have been given a ridiculously awesome axe and a great price. The neck is perfection (really!!), finish is great, and the pups are amazing. I cannot see needing to replace them. The tuning keys aren't too shabby so I won't be replacing them at this point. Its great as is.
This is an inexpensive LP JR Special with tremendous sound. I absolutely love it. Buy it, just save me a TV yellow one, I think I'm going to want another before they stop the run.

Overall a pretty decent guitar for the price. I was however, dissapointed that the body of the guitar is basswood with very very thin mahogany veneer on front and back. It is also very light. It also has some high frets @ 12-14th that will need leveling off to get better action. The pickups sound good to me and the guitar seems to have pretty good sustain. I'm satisfied with the guitar and really like the TV yellow finish.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:
I could'nt beleive what I got. I bought a used guitar and received a brand new one in the company box with seal tapes and full warranty papers.
I had to adjust the action to my taste, a little lower than it was, but the rest was top notch. I am very impressed by the all around quality of this instrument. Great guitar to complement my Strat Classic Vibe 50's.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:
I bought and received this guitar about a month and a half ago, in the worn TV yellow finish. I've always wanted a guitar with p90s, and I've always wanted a les paul. I'm not some 10 year old who just got his first guitar. I have played guitar for 13 years now, and have done luthier work for two+ of those years. so i like to think i know what I'm talking about. I bought this guitar last minute as an add on to an order for a bunch of accessories. I had never even seen it in person before. But I figured at that price, how could I go wrong? The guitar showed up at my front door very promptly. From placing the order to unboxing took all of 5 and 1/2 days. It was excellent condition, along with the rest of my order. No flaws in the fit and finish of everything. The fret ends were a tad bit sharp, but that was to be expected with an instrument of this price. And it was nothing I couldn't fix with all of ten minutes with a fine file. The satin finish on the neck feels like home. The size of the neck is a nice change of pace from my ibanez, and really didn't take much getting used to. The fretboard is a surprisingly nice chunk of rosewood, and the inlays are pearloid (which iI plan on swapping out with paua abalone). The pots, 3 way toggle, and input are all very solid which surprised me, as I've heard bad things about Chinese made electronics. The pickups are snappy and bright, with very little single coil hum. The bridge is incredibly simple and effective. And after dealing with a Floyd rose for the last year and a half, frankly feels like a godsend. Super comfortable when palm muting. It stays in tune very well. And with playing for a couple hours a day I find myself retuning only once every couple of weeks or so, and retuning should be completely eliminated once I throw some hipshot locking tuners on. Again, I expected to be retuning much more frequently with no-name tuners and that low price tag. The body and neck is advertised as solid mahogany, but it feels far too light to be mahogany in my opinion. Feels like basswood with a mahogany veneer to me. Despite it being a bolt-on neck, all frets are easy to reach with my average sized guy hands. The nut is made of what looks like cheap plastic, but is really quite resonant. If you want a guitar with a lot of different features, this is not for you. But in my humble opinion this guitars best features is the lack of them. Just plug it in, turn up the volume, and play. You will focus less on the instrument and more on your playing. The instrument was set up perfectly when it arrived. A bit out of tune but that's to be expected with temperature and humidity changes while being shipped. The factory strings were 9's i believe, and they were horrible. Instantly i clipped them and threw on some power slinky 11's. Now it sounds and feels better. The grain of the "solid mahogany" is visable through the tv yellow, and i love that. There is a small brown spot on the grain, on the left front side of the guitar. But to me that just adds character, and i call it a birthmark. Don't buy this expecting to play black metal with it, for gods sake it has p90s. But you can easily get some good grunge, punk, and SOME modern rock tones from it. Anything clean also sounds great. They have the warmth of humbuckers, and the snap and twang of single coils. I usually buy a budget guitar expecting to put at least another couple benjamins into it. But honestly, straight from the factory (with a little tlc, and setup mind you) i could see this guitar lasting me for decades to come. My only complaint is that i don't have enough money to buy ten more of them to practice some refinishing ideas, and modify. Take my advice people, get yourself two or three of these before epi realises how hot they are and jacks the price up.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:
I'm normally a huge defender and even booster of the epiphone line. I've always found that while Epiphone's QC might not be the best, if I walked into a store and played several I'd find one I loved in any given run. This guitar was a solid exception.
I drove around specifically looking for this guitar. After trying several, even at the price point, I was loathe to purchase. I'm a big fan of p-90 pickups, I have them in a dot, and a les paul (Also both epiphones, and I love both of those guitars). The P-90s on the special were dull and uninteresting. No real growl, no real throat. For comparison reasons I was playing through a fender blues jr. so your mileage may vary and it may be perfect for what you play.
The finish was a lovely (looking) satin that somehow made the neck feel slow instead of fast.
Look for something better that's heavily used.
Explanation of Rating Scale
1: Firewood
2: Totally playable but bad in every way.
3: A Good, Working Guitar.
4: An excellent guitar in every way.
5: a Transcendent playing experience the likes of which few on this earth will ever experience.
My rating of two stars indicates, perfectly my feelings on this guitar. If someone gave it to me, I'd have fun playing it, because it does, totally work. However, it's not just Epiphone cheap electronics that detract from the playing experience. The whole thing just feels wrong.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:
A decent guitar to have lying around. Setup is surprisingly good, action is decent & holds in tune fairly well. The neck is cheap, you can use it as a whammy bar. Fit and finish is OK, hardware is cheap. Pickups are a little flat, not a lot of dynamic response. A good deal if you are looking for an inexpensive beater.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:
I swear to god I've got this. But mine is routed for humbuckers and loaded with such. Anyone know if Epiphone released just a few like mine?
Just as the pictures here mine says Special Model on the headstock and has the combo bridge/hardtail unit-- none of the Epi LP IIs have that unit.
Pretty thin neck and tight nut as in 1 10/16 inch. It's a 24 3/4 inch scale.
What's cool is that this is a stained satin guitar without all that thick poly coat some manafacturers are using on their cheapies. Neck and body is a smooth flat finish.
The picture here of the worn cherry doesn't do justice. As my worn cherry one shows grain by golly. And I think it's a real grain from a mahogony ply too-- not a rolled on fake grain.
This is my only solid body out of my 9 that I didn't have to shim a bad neck set, no kidding.
The nut is graphite. I'll be set when I have a Tech with the right tool cut my g string nut slot down closer. That all that's wrong with this thing. Truss rod works fine and the adjustable bridge is functional.
You intonate this by the two e strings and the rest fall in line automatically.
All in all a great little budget axe. I can't speak to the P-90 pickups. But I like mine fine with the 'buckers that was put in mine.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:
SOOOOOOO FUN TO PLAY!
A lot of guitar for the money. It isn't flashy and the pups could be stronger but it is about the best you could ask for in this price range.
It's a straight rocker, good for punk and indie but not ideal for country or anything needing twang. It's very much a plug it in, turn it up, hammer on it type of guitar.
Got mine in TV Yellow (because "She got a TV Eye on me") and the finish looks good, a nice satin feel and the wood grain shows through just a bit.
It's real mahogany so no need to question anything in that department.
The build quality seems good to me. I have a few epiphones (two from China and a vintage model built in Japan) and the quality is always solid. A lot better than most other made-in-China companies.
I have higher end guitars, both electric and acoustic, but honestly Epiphone can't be beat.
My Epi Special I and DR-100 acoustic get played more now than my American Tele and my Martin.
These are great instruments and crazy fun to play.
